Watch: Brendan Fraser Gets Emotional When He’s Told The Internet Loves Him

The internet and social media tend to jump on fads and phenomenons that almost instantly fade from memory, but when it comes to an actor with enduring popularity that the online community has nothing but constant and undying love for, Brendan Fraser has to be right up there with Keanu Reeves.

The star trends on a regular basis for no other reason than people can’t help but praise his work and personality, turning him into something of an internet folk hero. The good news for his army of supporters is that a full-blown Fraser renaissance appears to be on the cards, with the 52 year-old racking up a series of acclaimed performances and exciting projects.

During a virtual meet and greet, one lucky fan got the chance to speak to The Mummy‘s Rick O’Connell directly, and as you can see below, he got more than a little emotional when he was told that he has the full backing and appreciation of so many people.

Having drawn strong notices for his televised turns in Trust, Condor and Doom Patrol, Fraser then stole every one of his scenes in Steven Soderbergh’s HBO Max crime thriller No Sudden Move. He’s also recently wrapped Darren Aronofsky’s bizarre-sounding The Whale, where he plays a 600-pound man looking to reconnect with his estranged daughter, in what has the potential to be a career-best performance.

In addition, he’s just joined Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in AppleTV+’s mega budget literary adaptation Killers of the Flower Moon and boarded Palm Springs director Max Barbakow’s comedy Brothers alongside Peter Dinklage, Josh Brolin, and Glenn Close, so we could be looking at a rapid return to prominence for someone who deserved much better than he got from the industry two decades ago when his star was at its highest.

Ant-Man Star Doesn’t Think He’ll Be Involved In Quantumania

Shooting got underway on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at the end of July, but so far the production has been keeping its cards very close to the chest as to who’s involved. The majority of the main players from the first two installments are back, but there’s also been some major additions and a little bit of chopping and changing.

Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer are obviously returning, but Freaky and Detective Pikachu star Kathryn Newton has replaced Avengers: Endgame‘s Isabelle Fuhrmann as Cassie Lang, which has led to more Young Avengers speculation. Jonathan Majors will follow up his cameo in Loki with a full-blown villainous debut, while it looks as though Corey Stoll could be making a surprise appearance as Yellowjacket.

Michael Peña is still to be confirmed as Luis, T.I. is definitely out as Dave, David Dastmalchian hinted that we won’t be seeing Kurt and there’s been no word on Walton Goggins’ Sonny Burch, either. Another Ant-Man alumni still waiting for the call is Bobby Cannavale, who admits that he doesn’t think Jim Paxton is on his way back to the MCU after filming started without him being contacted.

“I’m still checking my emails. I know they started shooting so it doesn’t look good for Paxton. There’s a part of me that thinks I’m not in this one because they’ve got something bigger coming up. Ant-Man and Paxton. Or maybe I go away long enough that I can be my own hero.”

No offense to Cannavale, but nobody’s really going to miss him. He was barely in the first two movies at all, and even then the role was a waste of a hugely talented actor. That being said, maybe he’ll be drafted in for a couple of scenes later on down the line, but with Kang the Conqueror set as big bad, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania might have much bigger fish to fry that doesn’t concern the franchise’s minor supporting players.

Free Guy Director Explains Why The Movie Isn’t Releasing On Disney Plus

Hollywood has become more reactive than ever during the Coronavirus pandemic, beginning last March when the theatrical industry was ground to a standstill. Movies were delayed by anywhere up to a year, others were sent straight to VOD or streaming, while the entire Warner Bros. lineup for 2021 were given hybrid releases.

Disney Plus Premier Access has only seen a few titles made available day and date, but the results have been mixed to say the least. Theater owners blasted the Mouse House for taking Mulan away from them, only for the live-action remake to stir up a ton of controversy and bomb in China after the creative team bent over backwards to ensure it appealed to the country.

Raya and the Last Dragon stayed in the box office Top 10 for sixteen weeks, Cruella didn’t hit the commercial heights that were expected, Dwayne Johnson said it was important for Jungle Cruise to be an option for people to watch at home, and Scarlett Johansson ended up suing the studio for breach of contract. It’s a double edged sword, then, but in a new interview Free Guy director Shawn Levy explained why his blockbuster remained a theatrical exclusive.

“I think, well two things, one is Disney shortly after they bought Fox, they came to a test screening of Free Guy. And I say this as someone who, whether it was Real Steel or Ryan had this experience on Deadpool 2 where, we’ve had movies that have tested euphorically, Free Guy tested like nothing to a number that neither Ryan nor I had seen and the Disney brass was there. So they always said through the whole pandemic, when we would say, are you sure you don’t want to just show people, because it’s done.

They really always felt that if Free Guy can get its moment in movie theaters and the audience can feel that experience, that it could catch a tailwind and maybe even justify the existence of other stories within a new franchise, it’s a big swing. I’ve seen the movie play in theaters and certainly every director would rather have it seen big and loud. So selfishly, narcissistically, the director of me loves that. But COVID permissive, permitting the hope is that that collective experience can bring the movie to life in the culture the way we feel it can. And that was always the position that Disney had.”

Let’s hope that the hybrid model doesn’t become a permanent fixture of the cinematic landscape, because the theatrical experience has been the lifeblood of the business for over a century, and nothing compares to seeing a brand new movie for the first time on the biggest possible screen. Business has been down for a long time now, but Free Guy has been gathering strong reviews and plenty of buzz, so fingers crossed it enjoys a stellar opening weekend and justifies the decision to keep it away from streaming.

Thor: Love And Thunder Director Wants To Tell A Story Fans Wouldn’t Expect

Plot details on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor: Love and Thunder are being kept tightly under wraps, but given that director Taika Waititi keeps teasing that he’s made something bigger, better, badder, wilder and crazier than predecessor Ragnarok, it would be impossible to try and connect the dots even if we were provided with some story points.

What we do know is that Chris Hemsworth’s Odinson was traveling with the Guardians of the Galaxy the last time we saw him, while Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will return to the MCU for the first time in a decade and end up wielding Mjolnir. There’s also Russell Crowe as king of the Olympians Zeus, with Christian Bale once again going unrecognizable as villain Gorr the God Butcher, who we can assume will be looking to live up to his billing by slaying some deities.

Quite how all of that fits together into one coherent whole is anybody’s guess, but in a new interview Waititi admitted that he wanted to tell the exact opposite story from what fans were expecting, even if the title of Love and Thunder is a bit of a giveaway as to where things are headed.

“What I wanted to do from the beginning was to ask: ‘What are people expecting the least from this franchise?’. Oh, I know, a full-blown love story!”

We still haven’t mentioned Sam Neill, Matt Damon, Luke Hemsworth and Melissa McCarthy as the Asgardian stage versions of Odin, Loki, Thor and Hela, Jeff Goldblum’s return as the Grandmaster, or Idris Elba repeatedly teasing that Avengers: Infinity War may not have been the last time we see Heimdall.

That’s an awful lot of moving parts to hammer into shape, but we’ve got faith that Waititi and his team have ensured Thor: Love and Thunder delivers something special for audiences everywhere when it arrives next summer.

A Dismal Dwayne Johnson Movie Is Blowing Up On Streaming

Audiences and critics are never going to be in unanimous agreement when it comes to the majority of movies, and that’s definitely something that applies most of Dwayne Johnson‘s career. The actor didn’t become the biggest name in the business by stretching himself in prestige dramas or tackling challenging roles, but headlining the sort of effects-driven blockbusters he knew his fans wanted to see him make.

It’s an approach that’s put an awful lot of butts in seats over the years, cementing Johnson as one of the few stars in Hollywood capable of convincing people to watch his latest movie based on nothing but the strength of his personal brand. Take Jungle Cruise as a very recent example, which holds a 63% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but was deemed worthy of 92% by audiences.

Another case in point is Baywatch, the nostalgic retread of the 1990s favorite that brought back the buff bods and skimpy swimsuits, but sought to carve a new path as a raunchy action comedy. It may have earned $177 million at the box office, but it was awarded with a measly 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the worst-reviewed movies Johnson has ever starred in.

However, fans seemed to like it a whole lot more, and it’s rocking a decent 66% on the aggregation site from users. It doesn’t look as though that sequel will ever get around to happening, though, but Baywatch previously gained a reputation for circling around and repeatedly finding itself troubling the Netflix Top 10 most-watched list. It’s now on Paramount+, but it’s one again floated to the surface and become one of the top titles on an entirely different platform.
