Verge readers can save up to $300 on iRobot’s flagship Roomba S9 vacuums

iRobot

If you’re tired of doing all of the vacuuming around the house, iRobot’s slick Roomba S9 and S9 Plus robot vacuums are up to $300 off for readers of The Verge. The high-end S9 Plus is $1,099 (down from $1,399) until supplies last at Wellbots with the offer code S9PLUSVERGE. This model comes with a base that the vacuum can automatically find, then deposit its waste bin into (up to 30 times before you’ll need to empty the base).

For those who don’t mind manually dumping the vacuum’s bin into the garbage each time it needs to (after all, the vacuum is doing the hard part for you), you can save yourself even more money. The standard S9 without the base included is $899 (usually $1,099) at Wellbots until supplies last. Just use the offer code...

Facebook gives Oculus Go permanent $50 price cut

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Facebook has permanently cut the price of its Oculus Go VR headset. “Oculus Go is now priced at $149, which is equal to a $50 price drop,” the company tells UploadVR. “We are applying comparable discounts across all countries where Go is sold. Updated pricing is rolling out to all channels.”

The Oculus Go is manufactured by Xiaomi and marked Facebook’s effort to produce a low-cost, entry-level headset that could handle 360-degree video and other basic VR content without relying on a phone. With a Snapdragon 821 processor and no real head or hand tracking, it offered a roughly comparable experience to phone-based solutions like Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Daydream.

Phone-based VR is kind of a dead end, though — both of those competing...

Don’t Breathe Sequel Gets A Director And Official Title

Of all the horror-tinged sleeper hits to arrive in recent times (see: It, Get Out, Split, Happy Death Day), Don’t Breathe isn’t exactly one that you’d expect to get the sequel treatment.

Don’t get us wrong, Fede Alvarez’s taut, water-tight thriller was an absolute blast from start to finish, but the plot doesn’t really lend itself to a sequel on first glance. Not to mention that Alvarez has been pretty busy lately and hasn’t been able to commit to returning for another outing. At least, when it comes to directing.

But it seems a follow-up is still moving ahead and Discussing Film brings word tonight that Rodo Sayagues (who penned the first film) will be replacing Alvarez behind the camera as he gets ready to make his directorial debut on the pic, which is titled Don’t Breathe Again. Fede will still be involved, though, helping to write the script alongside Sayagues, and also returning is Stephen Lang as The Blind Man.

Don't Breathe

As far as plot details go, there’s not much to dig into, but Discussing Film claims it’ll pick up years after the initial home invasion, with Lang’s character now living in isolation. His peace is disturbed, though, when a group of “violent and mysterious people hold him accountable for his sins.”

Unfortunately, that’s all we’ve got to go on, but with production on Don’t Breathe 2 set to get underway in April, we imagine more will come to light soon. For now, though, fans can rest easy knowing that this thrilling little series is getting another outing and we can only hope it matches up to the stellar first movie, which was one of 2016’s most intense and enjoyable films.

Huawei P40 Pro leak shows off five-camera bump and ceramic body

New renders from Evan “Evleaks” Blass give us what may well be our best look yet at Huawei’s next flagship phone. This is the P40 Pro, according to Blass, who says that the phone will make use of ceramic in its build. As with a previous leak, it looks like the front glass and back panel will curve on all four edges.

The most prominent design feature revealed in the images is the colossal camera bump that houses five lenses, one of which is a periscope-style telephoto camera. The Leica branding and technical details describe the array as covering 18-240mm equivalence, which between the ultrawide and telephoto should amount to more than 13x zoom reach. It’s likely, though, that Huawei is relying on software enhancements to arrive at that...

This clever R/C car leans and drifts like it weighs tons, not pounds

A handy Redditor has made a really cool Arduino-powered toy R/C car that can dip, move, and drift almost exactly like a real car. (And it’s decked out with an awesome-looking 1963 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Wagon shell, to boot.)

Seriously, watch this thing take a few turns. I’ve never seen an R/C car move like this — it realistically leans into turns and drifts, almost like a stunt car driven in a movie. Most R/C cars don’t move with quite the same illusion of weight.

This next GIF is pretty cool, too, showing how the car can bounce side to side and “fire” up its exhaust pipes as if it was revving up. It also gives you a brief look of what’s under the hood, so to speak:

The maker of the car, Dimitar Tilev,...

Here’s the zany internal Apple music video you’ve probably never seen

This morning, we introduced you to The Apple Archive, an unofficial collection of the Cupertino company’s official videos, print ads, marketing images, and even some eye-opening internal training videos — check out young Woz and his single earring at the beginning of this early video on the value of patents!

But at the time, we were blissfully unaware that the archive also included this delightful monstrosity: a four-minute music video masquerading as an “Easy Pay training video.”

We will now inflict it upon you:

It just keeps on going, doesn’t it?

I can guess what you’re thinking, but no, these employees were not fired — in fact, a LinkedIn profile suggests lead singer Brian Maslow spent five more years at the company and got...

Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle Expected To Bomb At Box Office This Weekend

There once was a man from across the pond. Him and his animals had a glorious bond. They would sit and converse, and for better or worse, now all of you can see.

Did you like my little ditty there? I hope so, because I made it up. Speaking of which, you know what I thought was made up the first time I saw it? Dolittle, Robert Downey, Jr.’s first post-MCU film. The trailer looked like a joke, a fast one pulled on me by Marcus Theaters before I saw that damn Star Wars or that amazingly under-awarded Uncut Gems. But nope, it’s real, terrible CGI and awful cover of “It’s a Wonderful World” and all. And ya know what? Most other people seem to agree with my takeaway, as Dolittle is going do very little, box office-wise.

According to Box Office Pro, the film is tracking to make just a hair under $17 million in its opening weekend. Compare this to Bad Boys For Life tracking to make over $40 million, and 1917 riding its nominations to $25 million. While I personally wouldn’t scoff at making $17 million in a weekend for writing this specific article, when a movie costs $175 million to produce (that’s not even counting advertising costs), that’s, like…really bad. Like…really bad.

Even Cats is going to wind up making more than this dumpster fire, and that kitty litter in and of itself is highly-regarded as a colossal misfire. But at least Cats is sure to enter that So Bad, It’s Good (TM) territory and get lots of people hate-watching it for fun. At least it has music and confusingly attractive cat-human bodies in it, right?

Dolittle, meanwhile, has the voice Rami Malek, slumming for a paycheck as a polar bear named Chee-Chee. Not exactly high art here. Reviews are also pretty terrible. All of this on top of rumored production woes make for a film destined for the trash heap.

Poor RDJ. Well, kind of. I’m sure half of the budget went to that smart, savvy businessman. He milked Marvel for every cent he could, and it’s made him hate indie films apparently. Too bad, because he can be a really effective actor when he wants to be. Some of his early work is enthralling, albeit drug-fueled. As snarky as I am, and I am snarky, I really, genuinely hope Dolittle bombing doesn’t send the man down a bad path again.

The Mandalorian Director Eyed To Helm Upcoming Star Wars Movie

Well, here’s some exciting news to end the day on.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Taika Waititi, the prolific director who’s getting ready to make his way back to the MCU for Thor: Love and Thunder, is being eyed to helm an upcoming Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. Details are scarce, but the outlet says that the studio is currently courting him, though it remains to be seen if he’ll sign on.

Speaking to our own sources, we’ve been told that he’s wanted for an original project which would feature characters from the comics not yet seen in the Original, Sequel or Prequel trilogies. But again, THR’s report doesn’t shed much light on what the studio has planned for the Thor: Ragnarok director and we haven’t been able to dig much else up. Still, this is definitely exciting to hear.

As fans will know, Waititi already has considerable experience with the franchise after playing a pivotal role in The Mandalorian. His part? The sharp-shooting droid known as IG-11. Not only that, but he also got behind the camera to helm an episode of the hit show.

With insiders saying that The Mandalorian has become a training grounds of sorts for Lucasfilm to test out directors before handing them feature-length movies, it makes sense that Waititi is now being offered something bigger and after giving Marvel one of their most beloved films to date with the aforementioned Ragnarok, it’s not hard to imagine that Disney wants him more heavily involved in Star Wars now, too.

Again, we’ll stress that this isn’t a done deal just yet and according to THR, the director is only being courted at the moment. But if Waititi does indeed sign on to helm a pic in that galaxy far, far away, tell us, what would you like to see him bring to the franchise? Sound off down below and let us know.
