Samsung details its stunning bezel-less 8K TV

Image: Samsung

The bezel-less TV from Samsung is indeed a real product being announced here at CES 2020. However, it’s only available in an 8K set that’s guaranteed to be very expensive. I would’ve loved to see a step-down 4K model to make this gorgeous design attainable for more people, but it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that getting the “infinity display” means you’ll have to opt for the nicest TV in Samsung’s entire 2020 lineup. Pricing isn’t yet being disclosed, nor is a release date; Samsung’s new TVs usually ship by spring, however.

Samsung Korea spilled the details a little prematurely with a press release; Samsung is holding its TV-focused First Look event on Sunday evening in Las Vegas.

The new QLED 8K uses 99 percent of its front...

Samsung’s ‘artificial human’ project definitely looks like a digital avatar

On Friday we wrote about Samsung’s mysterious ‘artificial human’ project Neon, speculating that the company was building realistic human avatars that could be used for entertainment and business purposes, acting as guides, receptionists, and more.

Now, a tweet from the project’s lead and some leaked videos pretty much confirm this — although they don’t give us nearly enough information to judge how impressive Neon is.

The lead of Neon, computer-human interaction researcher Paranav Mistry, tweeted the image below, apparently showing one of the project’s avatars. Mistry says the company’s “Core R3” technology can now “autonomously create new expressions, new movements, new dialog (even in Hindi), completely different from the original...

Samsung confirms Galaxy S11 event for February 11th

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

The next Galaxy flagship smartphone from Samsung is indeed being announced on February 11th. After the date was discovered earlier today thanks to an unlisted video, Samsung has now confirmed that its Unpacked event will be held that day in San Francisco.

There’s little doubt we’ll see the Galaxy S11 (rumors indicate it might actually be branded as the S20 for some reason), and Samsung is also at work on its second foldable phone after last year’s Galaxy Fold. If you like reading into such things, the invite could be seen as a tease of both devices. And Samsung indeed confirms that more than one is coming on the 11th.

Next Star Wars Film Saga Will Reportedly Be Set During The High Republic Era

Though the latest era of the Star Wars franchise only just came to a close with the recent release of The Rise of Skywalker, the wheels are already in motion for the next wave of films. And if a new report from Making Star Wars has it right, then the current plan is to journey back 400 years before the Skywalker Saga even began.

According to the site’s sources, the next big screen saga will be set in the “High Republic” era. At this point in the franchise timeline, it’s said that the Sith’s “Rule of Two” has been established by Darth Bane, and Yoda is already a Jedi, but “isn’t the old Jedi we know from the Skywalker era.”

The report adds that this next set of movies will not be another trilogy, but rather “a series of films which will be released in the same story era and interconnect.” This Marvel-style method of storytelling was apparently what Lucasfilm had in mind when they put out those two Star Wars Story spinoffs, but they never got as far as connecting these films, presumably because the commercial failure of Solo put a halt to their plans.

Marvel May’ve Gained Full Control Of Hulk, Solo Movie Could Happen

Marvel’s old tactic of selling off the screen rights to its most popular characters has come back to bite them in recent years as they haven’t been able to put all their toys in the same box. With the X-Men and the Fantastic Four acquired thanks to the Fox merger and the Spider-Man/Sony deal continuing, though, the toy box is fuller than ever. Two of the last to completely come home, however, are Hulk and Namor, who have their rights split with another studio. Or at least, that used to be the case.

MCU Cosmic’s Jeremy Conrad is reporting that he’s heard a rumor from a “very reliable” source that Marvel has now got full control over both the Jade Giant and the Sub-Mariner. Fans will know that though Bruce Banner can be freely featured in team-up films, Universal’s first-dibs agreement has prevented further solo movies from happening since Disney bought the company. Likewise, Universal at least partially holds the rights to Namor, too, a situation Kevin Feige has described as “complicated.”

According to Conrad’s intel, though, these troubles are a thing of the past and Marvel is now free to do whatever they want with the pair at last. It’s speculated that another Hulk standalone film is likely on the way, then, but that Marvel wouldn’t make a Namor movie given the character’s overt similarities to DC’s Aquaman. Instead, MCUC writes that he’ll be featured as either a hero or villain in other parts of the franchise.

Again, this is just a rumor at present, but there has been a fair amount of evidence of late that supports this story. A lot of reports have pointed to Namor appearing in either Black Panther 2 or Doctor Strange 2, for example. We know Marvel is also working on expanding the Hulk corner of the MCU in Disney Plus’ She-Hulk TV show. So, a more official confirmation of this news could well be on its way. Watch this space for more.
