The Model Y will be a test of Tesla’s popularity
Elon Musk often says that the key to Tesla’s success is how people talk about the company. “Great word-of-mouth is why Model 3 is the best-selling electric car, despite no advertising or paid endorsements,” he wrote in September 2018. The company repeatedly admits this, too. In its most recent 10-K filing with the SEC, Tesla said word of mouth, along with media coverage “have been the primary drivers of our vehicle sales leads,” which is how and why the company eschews traditional advertising.
But Tesla is still coming off a volatile 2018, and it has recently made changes in the name of cost-cutting that put this basic tenet of the company in some jeopardy. With Tesla closing many of its stores and shifting sales to an online-only model,...

Samsung is working on ‘perfect full-screen’ devices with selfie cameras under the display
Samsung is working on making the entire front of its phones a screen, with no need for bezels or a camera cutout of any kind. Yonhap News Agency reports that the company’s vice president of its display R&D group, Yang Byung-duk, said that “though it wouldn’t be possible to make (a full-screen smartphone) in the next 1-2 years, the technology can move forward to the point where the camera hole will be invisible, while not affecting the camera’s function in any way.”
The comments come less than a month after Samsung announced its latest flagship, the Galaxy S10, which is the company’s first phone to have a “hole-punch” cut out from its display for the selfie camera. Yang called the S10’s Infinity-O display a “milestone” for the company,...

China is about to overtake America in AI research
In July 2017, China’s government published an ambitious policy paper, outlining how the country would become the world leader in AI by the year 2030. But by some measures China has already succeeded in this goal — a decade ahead of schedule.
A new study shows that China’s output of influential AI research papers will soon overtake that of the US, the world’s current number one in AI research. The finding suggests that China’s plan to expand its AI capabilities with the help of generous government investment in both educational facilities and private industry is paying off.
In terms of sheer volume of AI papers published each year, China surpassed America back in 2006, but critics have pointed out that quantity does not necessarily...

Telegram gained three million new users during Facebook outage
Three million new users have signed up to Telegram over the past 24 hours, during a period in which Facebook (and Facebook Messenger), Instagram, and WhatsApp were all experiencing significant outages worldwide. The new users were announced by Telegram’s founder and CEO Pavel Durov on his personal Telegram channel. It’s a big number for a service boasting 200 million active users as of March 2018.
Telegram is a free encrypted messaging service similar to WhatsApp, and currently runs on user donations rather than the targeted ads model used by Facebook — which is enabled by the data it collects from its users. Telegram has always emphasized protecting its user’s privacy as one of its key features, and added end-to-end encryption support...

This robot gripper looks like a wilted flower, but it can lift 100 times its own weight
If someone asked you to imagine a robot, says Daniela Rus, a professor at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), you’d probably think of a human-shaped bot or some heavy-duty industrial robot arm. “But for me, I would like to see a change,” she tells The Verge.
The latest work from her team at MIT is a perfect example. It’s a robot gripper that’s designed to pick up objects, but its looks are unconventional, to say the least. Visually, it has more in common with a rubber tulip or a deflated balloon than a sci-fi robot hand.
It’s this unique look that makes the gripper so potentially useful. Underneath its rubber skin is an origami skeleton that’s shaped like starfish. As gas is pumped in and out of the...

Microsoft’s Pi Day sale takes $314 off of some Windows laptops and desktops
As it has done for the past few years, Microsoft is celebrating Pi Day 2019 by marking down a selection of PCs by $314; in some cases, even more. There aren’t any deals here for its lineup of Surface computers. Instead, this promo places its focus on Windows laptops and desktops made by Dell, Razer, HP, and others.
Perhaps the highlight of the sale is Dell’s XPS 13, which is $314 off. Only the configurations outfitted with a 4K display have made the cut. The best value offers an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8250U processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of solid-state storage for $1,085. You can pay $999 for the Dell XPS 13 with a 1080p screen, but upgrading to a 4K display doesn’t cost much more. If you want more power, the top-tier option bumps the...

Federal prosecutors are investigating Facebook’s data deals with phonemakers
Federal prosecutors are pursuing a criminal investigation into Facebook’s data deals it made with large tech companies, The New York Times reported today.
According to the Times, a grand jury in New York has been conducting the investigation and subpoenaed records from “at least two” large companies that make smartphones. The companies struck deals with Facebook to access user data like friend lists and contact information, without explicit consent from its users.
“It has already been reported that there are ongoing federal investigations, including by the Department of Justice,” a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge. “As we’ve said before, we are cooperating with investigators and take those probes seriously. We’ve provided public...

Flavored vapes draw FDA ire, with some exceptions
Today, the Food and Drug Administration took another step towards limiting the sale of sweet-flavored e-cigarettes in places where kids can buy them. But public health experts wonder if the move will be enough to make a dent in the massive increase of youth vaping.
After announcing plans in November to restrict the sale of e-cigarettes that come in kid-friendly flavors, the FDA today issued what’s called a “draft guidance” that starts to spell out how the agency intends to do so. For one thing, if the FDA catches companies marketing sweet-flavored e-cigarette products to kids or selling them in places minors can shop, the FDA may force these companies to pull the products from the market. FDA’s soon-to-be-ex-commissioner Scott Gottlieb...

Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are still down for some users around the world
Facebook and Instagram appear to be partially down for some users around the world today. While you can open both platforms and some services appear to have been restored, users are reporting issues with sending messages on Messenger, posting to the feed on all Facebook products, and accessing other features on Facebook.com, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Even Facebook-owned Oculus VR is experiencing issues related to the outage.
Earlier in the day, WhatsApp appeared to be fine for many people, but users in Paraguay, India, Bangladesh, Argentina, and more note that they begun experiencing issues with sending messages as the afternoon went on. DownDetector indicates that those in Brazil were experiencing the most severe outages.

Apple reportedly close to adding HBO, Showtime, and Starz to upcoming video service
Apple is expected to reach deals with HBO, Showtime, and Starz in time for its March 25th event, which will mark the debut of the company’s anticipated subscription video service. Finding content partners is proving critical, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, because the vast majority of TV shows and movies on the new service at launch will be from third parties.
Apple has been pouring money into original programming and has signed deals with plenty of big names — many of them will be attending the event at Steve Jobs Theater — but those efforts reportedly aren’t yet far enough along to be ready on day one. But the company will have at least some existing content of its own to fall back on, like Carpool Karaoke: The Series.

Twitch streamer Ninja reportedly earned $1 million for promoting Apex Legends launch
When Electronic Arts’ battle royale shooter Apex Legends surprise-launched early last month, it seemed like the entire gaming community started paying attention at once. Part of the reason for the immediate surge in interest was that EA paid top Twitch streamers to promote the game. And, in fact, one of those streamers, Fortnite extraordinaire Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, may have earned as much as $1 million for doing so, according to Reuters.
Ninja’s live-streaming and social media promotions helped Apex Legends gain traction among his 13.6 million-plus Twitch followers, as well as his Twitter following of over 4 million and Instagram audience of over 13.2 million. Now, an anonymous source tells Reuters that his efforts were reportedly...

Marvel hires Destin Daniel Cretton to direct the MCU’s first Asian-led film
Marvel has brought on director Destin Daniel Cretton to helm a film about kung fu master and superhero Shang-Chi. It will be the first Asian-led superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. Cretton is known for directing 2013’s Short Term 12 and 2017’s The Glass Castle, and his next film, Just Mercy, is due out next year.
Created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin in the 1970s, Shang-Chi is a Chinese criminal mastermind’s son who became a hero when he learned the truth about his upbringing, and devoted his life and talents to taking down his father’s criminal empire. In comic lore, he’s teamed up with other superhero groups, including the Heroes for Hire, Marvel Knights, X-Men, and the Avengers.

The interactive Syfy project Eleven Eleven will make you want to watch the same story six times
When Netflix debuted Black Mirror: Bandersnatch late last year, it put a spotlight on interactive storytelling outside the traditional gaming industry. Bandersnatch’s “choose your own adventure” format is one method of telling these interactive stories. For another flavor, you could try Syfy’s Eleven Eleven: a virtual and augmented reality project that premiered at SXSW this week and will get a limited release in May.
Eleven Eleven is a series of six interlocking stories set during the last 11 minutes and 11 seconds of life on a planet called Kairos Linea, which is about to be bombed into oblivion while its corporate overlords escape to a space station. Each story follows a different resident of a small spaceport: there’s the cyborg...

Jack Dorsey’s endorsement of anti-vax podcaster highlights Twitter’s misinformation problem
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is facing criticism for promoting a fitness writer and podcaster who has spread fears about vaccines. Dorsey tweeted his endorsement of the podcaster, author Ben Greenfield, after appearing on his show, noting that he was grateful for all of the work Greenfield does to “simplify the mountain of research focused on increasing one’s healthspan.” A Twitter spokesperson alleged that Dorsey wasn’t aware of Greenfield’s views on vaccines.
Despite pushback, Dorsey has yet to respond. Twitter has been pointing reporters instead to a follow-up tweet from Greenfield in which he says, “I rarely visit the topic, and had no idea until I did how charged the issue was.” Greenfield now says he is “not against vaccinations” and...

Black Adam Will Be The Villain Of Shazam! 3 Following His Solo Movie
It’s weird to think that Dwayne Johnson’s history with Black Adam predates Robert Downey Jr.’s with Iron Man, even though we’ve never seen him in character. The star formally known as The Rock was first attached as Shazam’s nemesis back in 2007 and was reaffirmed to be playing the part in the DCEU as well in 2014. Shazam! might be coming next month, but Johnson won’t show up as Adam. Instead, we’re told he’ll appear in the sequel. Specifically, the second sequel.
According to a source close to We Got This Covered, fans shouldn’t expect to see the ruler of Kahndaq in Shazam! 2 as Warner Bros. is keen for Johnson to first star as the character in the Black Adam solo movie, which is also in development. The plan appears to be for this to release after the first Shazam! follow-up, meaning Zachary Levi’s hero can finally face his evil counterpart in Shazam! 3.
This news tells us a few things. First of all, WB must be very confident in the upcoming film from director David F. Sandberg if they’ve already mapped out a whole trilogy of adventures for Billy Batson and co. Secondly, it suggests that we shouldn’t expect to see Black Adam particularly soon. A Shazam! sequel is presumably at least a couple of years away and, seeing as it’s coming after that, the earliest we’ll get it is likely 2022.
Whenever it does arrive though, it sounds like Black Adam will be an important part of setting up a whole new pathway for the DC franchise. After all, other reports have stated that heroes like Hawkman, Stargirl and Atom Smasher will feature in the flick, which will sow the seeds for individual films for some of them as well as a Justice Society team-up movie.
Before all that happens, though, we have the first Shazam! to look forward to, and it’ll be with us early next month, on April 5th.

Oscar Isaac’s Comments May Debunk That Star Wars: Episode IX Rumor About Rey
Ever since the The Last Jedi came out to a mix of praise and backlash from the fanbase, the rumor mill has consistently offered suggestions for how the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX might try to “fix” some of the more controversial elements from Rian Johnson’s film. One claim that keeps coming up, for instance, is that J.J. Abrams will retcon Rey’s ancestry, connecting her to a more relevant bloodline than the humble origins suggested in The Last Jedi.
But while it’s quite possible that Rey’s backstory as the child of “filthy junk traders” wasn’t what Abrams had in mind when he worked on The Force Awakens, we’ve yet to see any evidence to suggest that the filmmaker plans to undo one of The Last Jedi’s boldest reveals. And in a recent quote from Oscar Isaac, fans are getting the impression that Rey’s lineage will stay as unremarkable as Johnson intended.
The new theory concerns a recent interview with Today, in which the Poe Dameron actor confirmed that Episode IX will be the final installment in the Skywalker saga:
“It is the end of the entire Skywalker saga. Nine stories. This is the culmination of the entire thing.”
What’s this got to do with Rey? Well, fans have been linking the comment to a statement made by Kathleen Kennedy in a 2017 episode of The Star Wars Show:
“We’re sitting down now and we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars and we’re looking at narratively where that might go. Future stories beyond Episode IX with these new characters, Rey, Poe, Finn, BB8… The possibilities are endless.”
From the sound of things, Kennedy in 2017 had plans for Daisy Ridley’s character beyond Episode IX. But if Rey’s story continues after the Skywalker saga ends, then the suggestion here seems to be that Episode IX will not reveal Rey to be a Skywalker, despite ongoing rumors and fan theories to the contrary.
Given how old the Kennedy quote is, it seems quite possible that Lucasfilm has since dropped plans for future Rey movies, meaning that her story would end at the same time as the Skywalker saga. But either way, it’s hard to imagine Abrams giving the heroine some last-minute Skywalker connections, especially when this would heavily undermine The Last Jedi’s message that anyone can be a Jedi, regardless of whether or not they won the birth lottery.
In any case, we’ll find out what Abrams has in mind for both Rey and the Skywalker bloodline when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
