Every single week, Netflix adds dozens upon dozens of movies and TV shows to the library, many of which almost immediately become lost in the shuffle and buried by the algorithm, making them incredibly difficult to find unless you know exactly where to look.
It’s a fate that could befall many of the 23 arrivals coming to the platform over the next seven days, but there’s more than a few that possess plenty of breakout potential. The most notable would be Fear Street Part 2: 1978, which comes hot on the heels of first installment 1994, and green-lighting the ambitious horror anthology is already proving to be a winning decision on Netflix’s part after the opener managed to nab top spot on the most-watched list less than 48 hours after premiering.
There’s episodic favorites, brand new exclusives, hidden cult classics and admittedly a couple of unarguable duds in the bunch, but you can nonetheless check out the list below in its entirety.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness will be looking to continue Netflix‘s hot streak of adapting popular properties into acclaimed animated shows, while Atypical and Virgin River are both back with new seasons. The most exciting episodic debutant of the week has to be Biohackers, though, the acclaimed German sci-fi series that far too many subscribers have been sitting on.
Easygoing and irreverent action comedy American Ultra is the sort of star-powered genre fare that tends to play well with audiences, with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart generating plenty of chemistry in their third onscreen collaborations, while Fast & Furious fans might be willing to check out Brick Mansions, Paul Walker’s remake of French actioner District 13 that holds the unwanted distinction of being the actor’s first posthumous release.
It’s been evident for a long time that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will place a greater emphasis on diversity, representation and inclusion than ever before, and Black Widow will be the next major step towards leveling the franchise’s playing field.
Not only is Phase Four’s theatrical kickoff the first of the studio’s comic book blockbusters to be directed solely by a woman as Cate Shortland follows in the footsteps of Anna Boden co-helming Captain Marvel alongside Ryan Fleck, it’s just the third MCU effort to boast a female title character, with Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff seconding Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers as women to take top billing in their own mega budget standalone offerings.
Looking at the upcoming slate of big screen and Disney Plus projects, the likes of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Marvels, Blade, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart and others all boast plenty of diversity on either side of the camera to continue in a similar vein.
In a new interview to promote Black Widow, Marvel Studios’ Executive Vice President of Film Production Victoria Alonso reiterated that the long-running series will no longer look to objectify women, after she directly used Tony Stark’s comments on Natasha during her first appearance in Iron Man 2 as an example.
“It bothered me then and it bothers me now. I remember thinking, ‘She’s not a thing.’ But how apropos: the world sees a sexy woman and thinks that because she is beautiful, that’s all she has to give. There was always a myth that women’s stories don’t sell. That superheroes can’t be women. We had to demystify a bunch of these myths that were very much a part of what Hollywood was all about. I think there is a conscientious effort not to objectify women.”
Of course, looking at the sheer size of Chris Hemsworth’s arms, the majority of the MCU’s male superheroes will continue to enjoy the shirtless scenes that are surely contractually obligated to highlight the hard work they put in, but in a few years we could realistically be talking about Black Widow as a genuine turning point in terms of evening things out.
The Netflix Top 10 most-watched list is a curious beast, and it’s almost impossible to predict which titles from the vast content library will end up experiencing an unexpected resurgence, as recently shown once again by forgotten sci-fi Skylines.
The third installment in the surprising franchise was first added to the platform back in March, where it promptly found a sizeable new audience. Not content with doing it once, Liam O’Donnell’s low budget effort has only gone and done it again, reaching as high as third position a couple of days ago.
Skylines was originally sent straight to VOD at the end of last year, and it wouldn’t be too harsh to say that it failed to make much of a splash. The first film arrived in 2010 and was a sleeper hit after earning almost $70 million at the box office on a minuscule production budget, but it quickly faded from memory.
Sequel Beyond Skyline went straight to video and was a sizeable improvement upon its predecessor in almost every way, not least due to the presence of proven badasses and action veterans Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais to anchor the set pieces. Skylines follows a ragtag group of elite soldiers as they battle against a virus that threatens to turn friendly aliens into enemies, setting them off on an adventure into the farthest reaches of space.
It’s hardly a groundbreaking setup, but the critical consensus has pegged Skylines as being worthy of a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score, which is hardly awful. Strangely, though, audiences have rated it at a much lower 28%, despite the fact it’s scored new life on Netflix for a second time in just over three months.
Anyone with enough disposable income to shell out for more than the average of two streaming services must watch-lists packed to bursting point, given the sheer volume of content that arrives on a weekly basis to the ‘Big Five’ of Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, Hulu and Disney Plus.
This week is no different, offering up a diverse selection of established favorites, underrated gems, cult classics and several must-see originals, including the latest episode of Marvel Cinematic Universe series Loki, which has an awful lot of questions to answer after the events of last week.
In fact, the Mouse House are debuting a brand new hotly-anticipated show this Wednesday alongside the latest outing for Tom Hiddleston’s trickster, with Monsters Inc. spinoff Monsters at Work premiering and aiming to continue Pixar’s hot streak. Netflix also has Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness on the way to continue the theme of top tier animated originals, but you can check out the full and exhaustive list of projects coming to streaming below.

Fear Street Part 2: 1978 continues Netflix’s rollout of the interconnected horror trilogy, and it should play well given that opener 1994 has already made it to the top of the most-watched charts less than 48 hours after premiering, while Blumhouse’s controversial The Hunt is coming to HBO Max, and might look to ride the wave of backlash from certain circles and turn it into strong viewership numbers.
Of course, the biggest release of the week is without question Black Widow, which is coming to Disney Plus Premier Access and theaters simultaneously, and as the MCU’s first feature length blockbuster for two years, you can guarantee there’s going to be a massive amount of subscribers shelling out that $30 fee.
It’s a whopper of a week when it comes to new arrivals on Disney Plus. The Mouse House’s streaming service is offering up 16 fresh titles, including the premiere of a brand-new Pixar series and the movie that Marvel fans have been waiting well over a year for.
This week also marks a move towards the platform’s new release strategy. After the record-breaking success of Loki, D+ will now be dropping its original TV content on Wednesdays, with newly licensed titles and movies arriving on Friday as before. For the moment, any shows that have previously released on Fridays will continue to do so but eventually the two hauls will even out in size.
This Wednesday, July 7th, then, brings the penultimate episode of Loki, which promises to be a thrilling ride going by last week’s installment. What’s more, it’s accompanied by a new episode of clip show Marvel Studios Legends and Simpsons short film “The Good, The Bart, and The Loki” which features Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the God of Mischief.
The same day delivers the pilot episode of Monsters at Work. This new animated series serves as a sequel to 2001’s beloved Monsters Inc, following Mike and Sully as they reopen the company as a place to entertain kids not scare them. John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprise their roles, with Mindy Kaling and Ben Feldman joining the franchise.
Moving on to Friday, subscribers can finally get their hands on one of Disney’s biggest releases of the year. It’s Black Widow, the Scarlett Johansson vehicle that takes Natasha Romanoff back to her native Russia for a battle with Taskmaster. Streaming alongside its theatrical run, BW can be viewed for an additional $29.99 charge via the Premier Access label.
Here’s the full list of everything that’s new on Disney Plus the week beginning July 5th.

Don’t miss all of this on Disney Plus over the next few days.
Nobody’s going to argue that Sherlock will always be remembered as the breakout role of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s career, with the huge success of the global phenomenon catapulting him into the limelight and launching him straight in the direction of Hollywood stardom.
Martin Freeman has also done pretty well for himself out of the equation, but the BBC’s Holmes and Watson re-teamed in a mega budget blockbuster the same year the second season of the hit crime thriller was released, albeit in very different circumstances and at opposite ends of the character spectrum in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Ironically, Freeman had originally turned down the role of Bilbo Baggins due to scheduling conflicts with Sherlock, before he and Cumberbatch both ended up as part of the ensemble anyway. While the former may have played the lead and anchored the entire narrative, the latter didn’t even appear on set having suited up in a motion capture leotard to lend his movements and vocals to both Smaug the dragon and The Necromancer.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey may have earned over a billion dollars at the box office, which was to be expected from Jackson returning to Middle-earth after his classic Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the sluggish pacing and unconvincing visual effects came in for heavy criticism. Freeman was roundly praised for his central performance, though, while Benedict Cumerbatch‘s minimal screen time was drastically increased across follow ups The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.
Almost a decade later and with an Amazon TV show and Warner Bros. animated movie in the works, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has found itself back in the limelight as one of the ten most-watched titles on Netflix.
Fans are still waiting on the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home to arrive, but as has become par for the course for many Hollywood blockbusters, the tie-in merchandise is starting to offer up some plot, character and even costume details.
A recent LEGO set hinted that Tom Holland’s web-slinger will be getting another upgrade to his suit, while also potentially teasing how several of the villains will factor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiversal blockbuster. Another range of merch has now been unveiled, and as you can see below, it looks as though Spidey will be sporting some nifty black and gold duds at some point.
While toy lines and such are never a guarantee of something that’ll be replicated onscreen, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier range did give away a 100% accurate look at Sam Wilson’s Captain America outfit long before he suited up in the Disney Plus exclusive, so it would be safe to assume that Holland will be adopting darker hues in No Way Home.
As for the logistical purpose of the black and gold ensemble, it’s been pointed out that it bears a distinct resemblance to the Anti-Ock suit seen in Insomniac’s Spider-Man video game, so it could have unique properties that come in handy against spoiler merchant Alfred Molina‘s returning Doctor Octopus.
Then again, in the comic books the wall-crawler has often worn insulated gear to combat the threat of Electro, so it might even serve him well against Jamie Foxx’s returning Max Dillon. Of course, we’ll have a much better idea when of how everything ties together when the first Spider-Man: No Way Home footage finally debuts, whenever that may be.
