Las Vegas’ Convention and Visitors Authority has recommended selecting Elon Musk’s The Boring Company to build and operate a “people mover” at Las Vegas’ convention center, says Steve Hill, LVCVA’s president and CEO. If the LVCVA’s directors approve the move, the goal is to build The Boring Company’s system in time to be used for the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2021, Hill says. Who is criminally liable when a self-driving car fatally strikes a pedestrian? Not the company that built and tested the car — at least not when it comes to Uber’s fatal crash in Tempe, Arizona last March, which killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg.
Uber won’t be charged with a crime, according to a letter, first reported on by Quartz, from Yavapai County Attorney Sheila Polk, the prosecutor who was temporarily in charge of the case. “After a very thorough review of all the evidence presented, this Office has determined that there is no basis for criminal liability for the Uber corporation arising from this matter,” reads the document.

Some major Android apps are still sending data directly to Facebook
Major Android mobile apps from companies including Yelp and Duolingo send data that could be used to personally identify you for ad tracking straight to Facebook immediately upon logging in, according to a new report from the London-based UK charity and watchdog group Privacy International (PI). This data transfer happens even if a user isn’t logged into Facebook on that device and even in the event the user doesn’t have an active Facebook account at all.
In addition to Yelp and Duolingo, PI found that two Muslim prayer apps, as well as a bible app and a job search app called Indeed, also sent similar data to Facebook that could be used to help identify users for ad targeting purposes when they browse the social network. It’s not clear...

Michael Bloomberg will fight for a carbon-free future instead of the White House
Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg today announced that he will not run for president, but instead launch a campaign to rid the United States of fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Explaining his reasoning on his eponymous news network’s opinion page, Bloomberg said the climate crisis was too urgent to be bogged down by political feuding.
“While there would be no higher honor than serving as president, my highest obligation as a citizen is to help the country the best way I can, right now,” Bloomberg writes. Former Harley-Davidson engineer starts an all-electric motorcycle company
Former Harley-Davidson engineer Erik Buell announced this week that he’s founded an EV startup called Fuell that will make all-electric motorcycles and bicycles. He’s teamed up with Frédéric Vasseur, the owner of the company that makes the chassis for Formula E. Of the dozens of electric motorcycles announced every year, this one seems like it might actually have a shot.
Fuell’s first product will be an electric-assist bike called Fluid that costs about $3,300. It will have two swappable batteries that combine to give it a 125-mile range, and will come in two versions, one with a top speed of 20 miles per hour, and another that can hit 28 miles per hour. EV startup NIO abandons plan to make its own cars
Chinese EV startup NIO no longer plans to make its own cars, the company announced Tuesday. Plans to build a factory in Shanghai — where Tesla is currently constructing the third Gigafactory — have been scuttled, and NIO will instead continue using its current contract manufacturer, state-owned automaker JAC Motors.
It’s a stark change in direction for the young company, which started making its first car, the ES8 SUV, for the Chinese market last year. NIO also just went public on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2018.

Here’s How Zac Efron Could Look As Kyle Rayner In Green Lantern Corps
For all the fan art that’s emerged in these last few months showing Zac Efron as the MCU’s Wolverine, the recent hearsay suggests that the Neighbors star may end up landing a part in the DCEU instead, as a character in the upcoming Green Lantern Corps film. And while we’ve yet to see any confirmation that Efron is even being eyed for a role, artist Mizuri has offered their impression of how the actor might look as cinema’s first Kyle Rayner.
Though it remains but a fantasy for the time being, it must be said that Efron wears the look well. Whether or not Warner Bros. is even searching for a Kyle Rayner, however, is still unclear, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart being the only two characters so far announced for the film. Then again, given how little news we’ve heard on Green Lantern Corps lately, it feels like practically anything could happen with project.
One thing we do know is that major DC player Geoff Johns has been working on a screenplay. In an interview with IGN last July, the Wonder Woman 1984 co-writer said that the film will “a complete reimagining” of the property that will “celebrate the mythology and reinvent it in a different way,” before adding that the script will be “very much inline” with elements from Johns’ own run with the Green Lantern comics.
In any case, the DCEU schedule has been filling up quickly as of late with The Batman, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Aquaman 2 all landing release dates in the last couple of months. At this rate, we probably shouldn’t expect Green Lantern Corps to reach theaters any sooner than 2022, but here’s hoping Warner can at least offer some clarification in the coming months.

Hereditary Director’s Back And Scarier Than Ever With Trailer For Midsomnar
Having finally got that clucking noise out of my head from Hereditary, which premiered in June of last year, you can understand my frustration when I sat down to watch the director’s latest trailer this morning. On the one hand, I’m thrilled. The trailer’s indescribably eerie, trading the rhythmic clucking for even creepier exhales. On the other hand, the nightmares have returned.
Ari Aster’s latest bad-shit-crazy effort is one unlike any other. Titled Midsomnar, the film follows a couple vacationing in a remote Swedish Village. Sounds like a million other horror movies, right? Wrong.
Centering on fables similar to the Greek myths that concluded Hereditary, this camp (or cult?) seems to be steeped with Swedish folklore (the title Midsomnar refers to an ancient Swedish tradition for the longest day of the year), which is why the picture is overflowing with blinding light and colorful flowers. Don’t let that fool you though, this is genuinely creepy stuff.
“You can’t speak, you can’t move” says an old lady in the background. That’s how most of us felt watching Aster’s debut, and that’s likely how we’ll feel again here.
With a Wicker Man-like premise, and Annihilation-like visuals, this one’s sure to be another hit. And it has to be. With a cast that includes Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, Julia Ragnarsson, Jack Reynor and William Jackson Harper, what could go wrong? A lot of things, actually. The actors from Hereditary reportedly suffered from PTSD after concluding production. And having seen it, you can’t blame them.
Still, from an audience perspective, everything’s hinting at Midsomnar being another end of the summer breakout. The movie opens August 9th courtesy of A24, just in time to spice things up a bit during the blockbuster season. Until then, I’ll be getting as much sleep as possible while I still can.

Here’s How Jessica Chastain Could Look As Poison Ivy In The Batman
If anything, the past few years have been kind to those of us who love DC’s female characters. On the silver screen, we’ve been treated to Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, so fingers remain crossed for their next cinematic outings living up to the hype. Actually, I’m quite intrigued to see what the latter and her cohorts bring to the table in Birds of Prey, though I’m admittedly not thrilled with the costuming. I mean, would it physically hurt someone involved in that production to reference a comic book?
Still, I think it’s important that Warner Bros. make sure we see some of Gotham City’s other major femme fatales within the next few years. Whether it be in Matt Reeves’ The Batman or elsewhere, I can’t be the only one yearning for new takes on Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
In fact, it could be argued that fans are more so itching for Poison Ivy because she’s been absent from the film franchise since 1997’s Batman & Robin – and she certainly deserves redemption after that one. Helping us gaze into the crystal ball now is Datrinti, who posted their own rendition of Jessica Chastain as Pamela Isley on Instagram, which can be viewed below.
In my opinion, this beautiful piece of artwork illustrates how perfect for the role Chastain truly is. At this point in time, one would be hard pressed to think of many other actresses better suited for such a gig.
If I were to nominate one other though, I’d have to bring up Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch. Not only does she pretty much already have the look, but she’d previously dressed as Ivy for an ad campaign. Really, look it up for yourself and you, too, will be a believer.
The Batman, with or without Poison Ivy, arrives in theaters on June 25th, 2021. But before then, be sure to catch Jessica Chastain in X-Men: Dark Phoenix beginning on June 7th of this year.

Mark Hamill Says Carrie Fisher Would Get A Real Kick Out Of Her Star Wars: Episode IX Return
Before the passing of Carrie Fisher back in 2016, J.J. Abrams reportedly had big plans lined up for Leia Organa in Star Wars: Episode IX, but while the movie has since undergone rewrites, Leia is still getting some screen time by way of unused footage from the filming of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
The decision to include Fisher was made with the approval of her brother Todd, who mentioned last year that he’s “thrilled” about the sendoff that the film offers Leia, and according to Mark Hamill, the actress herself would’ve likely been pleased with her continued screen presence, telling Den of Geek:
“Harrison was more prominent in the first of the sequels, then I was more prominent, and Carrie was meant to be more prominent in the third. I’m glad they found a way to do that, and something tells me that she’d get a real kick out of the fact that she had a hit movie years after she left us, because that was just her. I like to think that would please her, but nothing would be better than having her here.”
Though very little’s known about Fisher’s screen time in Episode IX, actor Oscar Isaac claimed last November that the film deals with her absence “in a really beautiful way,” and from the sound of things, Hamill is pretty happy himself with the results.

Interestingly, a report emerged last month saying that actress Daisy Ridley has reverted back to Rey’s hairstyle from The Force Awakens (as per the recent set photo) in order to match with old footage of herself performing opposite Fisher, implying that the pair will be sharing the screen at some point.
Beyond that, details on both Leia’s role and the film as a whole remain vague, but with the annual Star Wars Celebration just over a month away, hopefully we won’t have too much longer to wait until we see some footage, or at least find out the movie’s official title. Either way, all will be revealed by the time Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
