Google is accused of union busting after firing four employees

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

On November 22nd, roughly 200 Google employees and supporters rallied to protest the suspension of two colleagues, Rebecca Rivers and Laurence Berland, for allegedly accessing internal information they shouldn’t have in the course of their worker activism. Now, it appears Google has fired both those workers, as well as two other employees who participated in the rally.

Bloomberg reports that Google sent out a company-wide memo today confirming that it had fired four employees for “clear and repeated violations of our data security policies,” saying those workers “were involved in systematic searches for other employees’ materials and work,” continued to do so after warnings, and leaked some of that information outside the company. Avengers: Endgame Cut A Big Black Panther Character From The Final Battle

If there was one thing that Avengers: Endgame had enough of, it was characters. At an astonishing three-hour runtime, Marvel’s galactic epic sprawled across the entirety of their cinematic universe, making sure it had incorporated at least one piece from each of their mega franchises.

A great portion of this final assembly took place during the film’s climatic battle against Thanos, as Doctor Strange ushered the lineup of Infinity War‘s vanished heroes back into the modern day. But despite all of these famous names on the screen together, there were some notable exceptions that fans couldn’t help but point out.

That being said, now that the film’s art book, Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie, has hit shelves, some of those concerns have been vanquished, bringing viewers into the minds of its creators and showing exactly how much bigger they were planning to go. And speaking of that, the filmmakers were apparently planning to incorporate one more person into that ginormous final battle: Black Panther‘s Nakia.

You can go ahead and check out the art for yourself down below:

Pictured above, Lupita Nyong’o’s ferocious Wakandan character can be seen fighting alongside the likes of Captain Marvel, the Wasp, Gamora and Valkyrie. It’s interesting that while she had absolutely no part in Infinity War, the creators were still considering planting her into Endgame‘s narrative. Perhaps, this is because Marvel now had time to consider just how popular Black Panther would be with its fans (Infinity War came out only 2 months after Ryan Coogler’s film first hit theaters); though that doesn’t explain why they left Nakia out.

This isn’t to say that Avengers: Endgame left out all Black Panther characters. In fact, not only were T’Challa, Shuri and Okoye the first to emerge from Doctor Strange’s portal, but members of Wakanda’s army led by Winston Duke’s M’Baku helped lead the final charge against Thanos, too.

J.J. Abrams Says Palpatine’s Return In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Was The Plan All Along

It’s coming up, guys. For but perhaps a moment, all of the nerds in the galaxy will stop gazing into Baby Yoda’s eyes and, instead, turn their gaze to the grand finale of space opera as a genre when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits silver screens. Despite a rocky road to this moment, J.J. Abrams, the sequel series creator/destroyer, insists that, despite all reports to the contrary, this trilogy was planned and that Emperor Palpatine’s return was gonna happen no matter what.

Speaking to Uproxx about the upcoming film, the reporter asked about the return of the original Big Bad, and questioned if it was planned or if it was only to fill the void left by Snoke. J.J. hits us with a lot, starting with this:

“You just look at what he talks about, who he is, how important he is, what the story is — strangely, his absence entirely from the third trilogy would be conspicuous. It would be very weird. That’s not to say there was a bible and we knew what happens at every step. But when Larry Kasdan and I worked on The Force Awakens, we didn’t do it in a vacuum. We very purposely looked at what came before. We chose to tell a story that touches upon specific things and themes and ideas that we’ve seen before, to begin a new story. But we examined all that came before to ask where does this feel like it’s going?”

But that’s not it. He continues this train of thought, saying:

“So there were discussions about that at the time. Yet, like any beginning, you want to put the threads in, but you don’t want to necessarily be literal about everything. And then when Rian was brought on to do The Last Jedi, we met and we talked about things and he wrote his story. And when I read it the script, I realized this didn’t get in the way of anything Larry and I talked about that I thought I’d get to. There were some very specific things we did get to do in this movie that we were laughing and going, ‘Oh my god, we’re finally doing that thing we talked about five years ago.’”

So, with that, J.J. claims that it was always his intention to bring Sheev Palpatine back into the picture. That seems plausible. I mean, I guess back when this trilogy was going to go J.J., Josh Trank and Colin Trevorrow, perhaps those three bespectacled dweebs sat and talked shop. I know Trevorrow’s name is still attached to The Rise of Skywalker as a writer, but he also revealed that Palpy was not in his original draft. So…wait, what?

Personally, I dislike the narrative that Disney has been trying to tell us by saying these films were planned. Sadly, and to their detriment, they were not. Eager producers attached under-experienced directors to massive projects with little (or perhaps too much) oversight. I really think the House of Mouse bungled this opportunity they bought for themselves. But I’m just one, humble man. If J.J. says this stuff was planned, then who am I to argue?

Besides, I’m going to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker anyway, so in a way, J.J. has already won.

Terminator: Dark Fate Director Reveals His Disagreements With James Cameron

Arnold Schwarzenegger is famous for saying “I’ll be back.” Now, the franchise that spawned that immortal line may never be seen again, thanks to the absolute bomb that was Terminator: Dark Fate.

Tim Miller, director of the film, had hinted previously at his lack of control over the overall quality of the pic and in a recent interview, the frustrated Deadpool helmer opened up more about specific incidences of James Cameron, the film’s executive producer, and himself clashing over creative choices.

Sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller let loose in a cathartic question session. Specifically, one of the biggest issues that came up between the two Terminator directors was over the new big bad AI, Legion:

“[I suggested] Legion is so powerful, the only way to beat it is going back in time and strangle it in the crib. Jim said, ‘What’s dramatic about the humans losing?’ And I say, ‘Well, what’s dramatic about the humans winning and they just need to keep on winning?’ I like a last stand. It’s not his thing.”

Apparently, there were also some contested lines in the film that the two creatives couldn’t quite agree on, either:

“I would fight for that line, because it was important to me. But does the audience really care? Probably not. As far as donnybrooks go, it’s not that big of a deal.”

Miller went on to lament how he had to accept that he just didn’t have full creative control on Terminator: Dark Fate, which is actually why he walked away from directing Deadpool 2. It was clear to the director that that film’s star, one Ryan Reynolds, was to be the lead creative force for that franchise, something Miller wouldn’t and couldn’t sit well with. His jumping ship to another major franchise, though, didn’t seem to work out in his favor.

Poor guy. Is Tim Miller one of the best directors working today? Eh, no. But hey; neither is my nemesis in the Hollywood directing game, James ‘Jimmy Boy’ Cameron.

I’m just always glad to see interviews like this where we, the normies, get an insight into the process. It ain’t always pretty, but, hey, it ain’t called Friend Business; it’s called Show Business.

Avengers: Endgame Alternate Ending Features Iron Man Surviving

Avengers: Endgame was Marvel’s most ambitious project yet, without a doubt. Bringing together pieces from nearly every single one of the films in their extensive cinematic universe, the studio took us on an intergalactic and also time-traveling journey of mammoth proportions. However, not everything went down smoothly with fans.

In the months since its release, the cast and crew have faced numerous questions, with viewers asking “why this” and “why that” in regards to various moments. But if there’s one question that’s been brought up the most, it’s probably: why did Tony Stark have to die?

Yes, at the conclusion of Endgame, Iron Man met his glorifying end, sacrificing himself to save the world from Thanos. But this wasn’t always going to be the case. In fact, as evidenced by the concept art below, there was an alternate ending to the film which actually saw Tony survive.

The above art comes from the pages of Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie and shows Steve getting ready to go back in time to return the Infinity Stones. And there to see him off is none other than Tony. Bruce, Bucky and Sam are nowhere in sight, so it’s unclear what they may be up to at this point. But if nothing else, this intriguing glimpse into the production of the film shows us that at one stage, Marvel considered letting Iron Man live.

Of course, whether this would’ve been better than what we ultimately got will probably come down to personal preference, but having Stark make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world did feel like the right move. And while Avengers: Endgame may have seen him physically die, there’s always hope that he can still return via AI form. Something that’s actually rumored to be happening in the in-development Ironheart TV show.
