Glitch launches subscriptions to power up its bite-sized apps

The coding platform Glitch is formally launching its first paid product today: a subscription that lets you pay to upgrade the bite-sized apps you can run on its platform.

Since it launched in 2017, Glitch has let anyone write and remix code and then publish bots, web apps, and other projects that it would host for free. But that free hosting came with strict limitations. Apps had limited RAM and storage, and more importantly, they would be shut down if they went dormant for just a few minutes, meaning you often had to wait through a sluggish start up before using them.

With its new subscription, Glitch is significantly expanding what apps can do. Subscribers will be able to “boost”...

Ecobee’s new security camera doubles as an Alexa speaker

Ecobee SmartCamera | Image: Ecobee

Smart thermostat maker Ecobee has announced its first indoor security camera, the $179 SmartCamera. The device is actually just one piece of a new home security platform, which the company calls Haven. In addition to the new SmartCamera, Ecobee is also introducing SmartSensor for doors and windows, a combination entrance and motion sensor that’s not unlike Google’s Nest Detect. The new SmartSensors will be sold in two-packs for $79. Both are available for purchase starting today.

Both of the new hardware products work in concert with Ecobee’s SmartThermostat (as well as the older Ecobee3, Ecobee3 Lite, and Ecobee4 models) and its basic SmartSensors to automatically determine when you are home or away and arm the system and set the...

OnePlus has put Samsung on notice

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

We got both the announcement and the embargo lift for OnePlus’ new top-tier smartphones yesterday. Here’s my review of the OnePlus 8 Pro and here is Jon Porter’s review of the OnePlus 8 — both with video.

These phones are interesting for slightly different — but related — reasons. OnePlus has always positioned itself as a scrappy insurgent nipping at the heels of bigger, more established companies. That’s code for Samsung, if it wasn’t clear. But every time, OnePlus’ value proposition was that it wasn’t charging you for stuff you didn’t care about so it could give you the best of stuff you did care about: speed and screen quality, mostly.

Which meant that OnePlus never really challenged Samsung directly, not really. The Galaxy and Note...

How a new book about Instagram changes our understanding of the founders’ departure

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Today let’s take a break from discussing our global pandemic to talk about one of my favorite books of recent months: Sarah Frier’s No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram, which is out today. It’s a meticulously reported, beautifully told story about one of the most successful apps ever created. No Filter is, at root, a marriage story — one about the union between Instagram’s precocious cofounders and Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. And while we have known for some time now that the marriage eventually went bad — Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger stepped down from their roles in September 2018 — No Filter fills in many of the details. And, along the way, it changed the way I thought about how Facebook acquires companies.

WB Reportedly Prepared To Make The Flash Without Ezra Miller

Ezra Miller has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons lately, with footage of the actor choking a fan going viral last week. The video will very likely have a hugely detrimental affect on his career and already tons of people are calling for him to be removed from his role as the DCEU’s Flash.

Of course, the 27 year-old has yet to comment on the situation, and Warner Bros. has remained quiet as well, leaving everyone to wonder what’s going to happen to the Scarlet Speedster’s solo outing. After all, the pic has been delayed several times already and rumors are swirling that Wally West is being lined up to replace Barry Allen in the DCEU.

Right now, it’s definitely not sounding too good for Miller and a new report from FandomWire only makes the situation even more dire for him. According to the outlet, while no decision has been reached as of yet, Warner Bros. is prepared to make the movie without the actor if need be.

“We’re told [the studio’s] new plans are well into motion, and will continue to move ahead quickly when they’re able to… with or without Ezra Miller in the suit.”

As for who would replace the Fantastic Beasts star, that we don’t yet know. But it sounds like nothing has been decided upon just yet and options are still being weighed. In all likelihood, things will probably be determined by how Miller handles the situation and his apology – which is surely on the way.

Obviously it would come as a huge blow to him if he lost out on the chance to headline The Flash after having been attached to the movie for so long, but this is certainly not something that Warner Bros. is just going to sweep under the rug. As such, we imagine that some sort of resolution will arrive in the coming weeks. Watch this space for more.

Riot is expanding access to the Valorant beta starting today

Image: Riot Games

Riot will make it easier to gain access to the closed beta of its popular new tactical shooter Valorant, the game developer announced late Tuesday. Now, not just select Twitch streamers, but all Twitch streamers who have access to the game can now drop the coveted beta access keys, so long as those streamers playing are actively live streaming the game and turn on the in-game drops feature.

This should make it much easier for eager Valorant fans to gain access to the game by watching different streamers and not just the select few Riot has given early access to and partnered with for the key distribution. To do good by the game’s fast-growing community, Riot says it’s also gone through thousands of the most dedicated Twitch users who’ve...

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Concept Art Reveals Detailed Look At Sith Dagger

Going back to things that didn’t make a whole lot of sense in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, some new concept art gives us a detailed look at the Sith Dagger.

After the gang of Resistance heroes found Ochi of Bestoon’s corpse, they came upon an ancient artifact of the Sith; a dagger that’d lead them to the location of the last Sith Wayfinder. Of course, with Threepio not being able to translate runes on the knife, the crew of the Millenium Falcon had to take a detour and override his protocols. Ultimately, the droid revealed that the Sith Wayfinder was in the Imperial Vault on Death Star II.

The ruins of the planet-killing space station were found on one of Endor’s orbiting moons. There, Rey used the dagger to locate the vault, making up one of the movie’s nonsensical plot elements. How did the dagger show the way to the vault? How did the Sith create this artifact, knowing that the Death Star would be destroyed and its ruins would shape just in the right way for someone to find the vault using the dagger?

Well, now that the official novelization is out and even that fails to address this particular error, I guess we’re not going to find the answer to these questions any time soon. Still, the dagger looked pretty cool and served as an elaborate plot tool for the last movie in the Skywalker Saga. But if you were wondering about what went behind the design process, concept artist Matthew Savage recently took to Instagram to share some models of it which give us a more in-depth look.

While the dagger was a bit too convenient for our taste, it did help the Resistance locate the last Sith Wayfinder, even if Kylo Ren destroyed it in the next scene. All’s well that ends well, right? As Rey used Kylo’s very own Wayfinder from the movie’s opening act to lead the Resistance to Exegol.

At any rate, this was yet another one of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘s controversial plot elements that made us wonder if Abrams and Chris Terrio had enough time to really flesh out the narrative.

Tell us, though, what are your thoughts on the Sith artifact in the context of the movie? Share them with us in the usual place below.
