Pain And Glory Review [TIFF 2019]
Pedro Almodóvar ventures inward for Pain and Glory, a diversely palleted observation of an ailing filmmaker’s self-reflections. Sprinkled with a mane of salt and pepper hair, Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas in a Best Actor-winning role out of Cannes) hasn’t worked for a long time. A growing list of physical defects and mental illnesses hasn’t made the art undesirable in his eyes, just unobtainable by his standards. When asked early on what he does when he’s in between creative periods, he solemnly replies: “live, I guess.”
But what we quickly learn is that his method of “living” doesn’t entail a whole lot. Quasi-meditating, quasi-sulking in his painting-drenched apartment, Salvador moves through his days incredibly slowly. Part of that reason may be his age; a back surgery has left the man half-crippled with a raw, bulging scar along the vertebrae. But another may be the relentless dread he holds of the future. In his mind, impending events only serve to block his obsessive childhood memories of his mother (played by Penelope Cruz, who looks as young as she did in Volver thirteen years ago). That is, until now.
Praised as a classic, Sabor – Mallo’s lone work mentioned in the film – has been restored by a Madrid cinematheque and is scheduled to screen in a series celebrating movies of the land. Having recently revisited the picture himself for the first time since its premiere three decades ago, Salvador’s eager enough to consider halting his Salinger-type retirement to introduce his breakout feature. His publicist Mercedes (Nora Navas) is skeptical, however, that he’ll actually show, especially since the Q&A would include Alberto (Asier Etxeandia), the heroin-addicted star of the feature who also takes up the better half of a very public falling out with the director.
Regardless, Salva rekindles his friendship with Alberto, a bond the actor considers mended once they have chased the dragon together – a first for the auteur. And through Alberto’s newfound company, Salvador finds that several of his past feelings squirm up to the surface. Each venture with the tinfoil-smoked heroin, which quickly becomes a habit, brings with it another idealized memory, providing an additional form of relief for the pain-riddled man.
With this film, Almodóvar retains his colorful aesthetic as well as the familial motifs he’s explored regularly in the past. After the opening credits unfold with a dazzling collection of hypnotic displays, Salva’s mother, who’s often shown trapped between the family’s poverty and the bountiful hope she has for her son, quickly proves to be the foundation of his entire being.
But if there’s one thing Pain and Glory makes clear, it’s that the artist mines several avenues of inspiration; final products are more often than not informed by those we cherish. And a possible root of Salvador’s creative block is the current absenteeism of relationships in his life: parental, platonic, sexual, or otherwise. He stirs the coals of his former meaningful partnerships, including his mother, who has since passed away, and a muscular painter from the old days, who he helped teach to read and write and (unintentionally) in return, provided him his homoerotic awakening. But one that sticks out is his ill-fated romance with Federico (Leonardo Sbaragila), which Salva formed into a script years ago before abandoning it.
The extent to which this film is autobiographical is not totally clear; Pain and Glory has been billed as the third of a semi-self-based trilogy – which also includes Law of Desire and Bad Education. But whatever the case may be, it’s caught Almodóvar in a pleasantly different, and rewarding light. Rather than incorporating the melodrama many of his most polarizing films have featured, this comparatively low-brow story, rich with bittersweet humor and heart, seems only interested in honoring its form; similar to Federico Fellini’s own filmmaker chronicle 8½ (1963).
The same applies to Banderas, whose rise to fame came in the early ‘90s when smooth-talking, smooth-faced Spanish men became the next “it” figure. Trading in his devilishly macho persona for loafers and eccentricities, he not only delivers the best performance of his career, but a top contender for the best of the year.

John Boyega Addresses Dark Rey In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
The second trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker closed on a shocking shot – Rey, clad in a Sith-like black robe and wielding a double-sided red lightsaber. This surely only pointed to one thing: that she’s about to turn to the Dark Side. Obviously, fans are desperate to know the true meaning behind this clip and now, John Boyega has cleared the mystery up by revealing all in a new interview. Or at least, that’s what we were hoping he would do.
In the latest episode of The Star Wars Show, the hosts caught up with the stars of Episode IX at D23 and asked them about the Dark Rey scene. Daisy Ridley herself remained tight-lipped as when the interviewer said they thought the shot was “absolutely amazing,” all Ridley said was “so did I.” Boyega had slightly more to say, however, though he still attempted to sweep the matter under the rug, shrugging it off as just a new look Rey tries on in the movie.
“I think we don’t need to do any theories about it. It’s just a wardrobe change…She liked it.”
Boyega’s obviously joking here, but there might be something to not treating the Dark Rey mystery as that big of a deal. It’d be a pretty bold twist for Rey to pull an Anakin and end the Sequel Trilogy on the Dark Side, after all, so this shot in the trailer is no doubt put there to bait us. The most likely scenario is that this is some kind of Force vision or mirage, similar to the time Luke saw himself in Vader’s helmet on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back.
The official Star Wars website has possibly even revealed that this is the case, with a write-up of the trailer describing Dark Rey as a “vision.” Perhaps tellingly, this description was soon edited to remove the curious word choice.
In any case, we’ll find out the truth when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finally hits cinemas on December 20th.

New Warner Bros. CEO Prefers Wonder Woman Over Superman And Batman
If you packed one hundred people into a room and asked each of them who’s their favorite superhero, there’s a very good chance you’d be met with many different answers. But for those with a lean toward DC, the three most common names you’d hear would most likely be Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. After all, those have been the publisher’s most enduring icons since the Golden Age, and they’re called “the Trinity” for a reason.
From the sound of it, Warner Bros. new CEO, Ann Sarnoff, has a definite answer of her own. According to Deadline, she was asked who she preferred between Superman and Batman in a workforce town hall meeting this past Wednesday, when she responded with “Wonder Woman!”
Now, it’s important that nobody takes this out of context by saying Sarnoff thinks we need to jettison Batman and Superman movies in favor of those headlined by Wonder Woman. Instead, I reckon she’s just voicing her personal preference overall – and there’s nothing wrong with that. Hey, Batman’s my favorite character, but I love me some Wonder Woman as well.
If anything, it’s good that someone so high up on the food chain is backing the Amazon Warrior. Though she raked in some serious box office bucks with 2017’s Wonder Woman and will likely do so once next year’s followup, Wonder Woman 1984, storms cinemas, the timeless heroine hasn’t always endured the best of treatment in multimedia. Remember that terrible pilot NBC tried getting off the ground in 2010? I’d rather not.
Speaking of which, Wonder Woman 1984 is due out in theaters on June 5th, 2020. Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig star, with Patty Jenkins returning to the director’s chair.

Here’s How Robert Pattinson Would Look As Batman Beyond
In just a couple of years, we’ll see how Robert Pattinson performs as the new Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. And as exciting as the wait for that particular blockbuster is proving to be, none of us have ceased wishing that a Batman Beyond movie one day come to fruition.
To provide a bit of background, Batman Beyond was an animated series that ran for three seasons around the turn of the millennium, and focused on a young man named Terry McGinnis who became Gotham City’s protector fifty years into the future. In the time since, its legacy has lived on in comic books, yet no live action adaptation has made it to screen.
Interestingly enough, digital artist SPDRMNKYXXIII has posted quite the eye-catching piece over on Instagram. Instead of placing Robert Pattinson in the guise of Bruce Wayne’s Batman, they’ve had him suit up as Terry McGinnis. Check it out below and see for yourself.
From the look of it, the default costume made famous by the Batman: Arkham Knight video game may have been used at the starting point, yet it’s been retrofitted to Batman Beyond‘s standards and color scheme. As cool as the suit from the cartoon was, you have to admit some modifications would have to be made for live action translations.
But when it comes to suiting up for The Batman, let’s take a look back at Pattinson’s comments regarding how slipping into Bruce Wayne’s crimefighting gear felt:
“It’s maybe the craziest thing I’ve ever done in terms of movie stuff. I put it on. I remember saying to Matt (Reeves), ‘It does feel quite transformative!’. He was like, ‘I would hope it does! You’re literally in the Batsuit.’ You do feel very powerful immediately. And it’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough’, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.”
Be sure to catch Robert Pattinson in The Batman when that arrives in theaters on June 25th, 2021. But before then, it’s recommended you pick up Batman Beyond: The Complete Animated Series on Blu-ray on October 29th of this year.

3 From Hell’s Sid Haig Hospitalized In ICU Following Accident
If the unfortunate situation involving Kevin Hart weren’t enough to sadden us this week, it’s come to our attention that veteran actor Sid Haig has likewise become the focus of tragedy. Specifics haven’t been given, but let’s go over what we do know.
At some point this evening, Haig’s wife, Suzie, posted the following at the top of his Instagram page:
SID HAS HAD AN ACCIDENT AND IS IN THE HOSPITAL IN ICU. EVERYONE PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM!!!!!!!! – SUZIE
Being in the intensive care unit is certainly no joke, so we wish Sid and his family all the best. All we can do right now is wait and hope that we have some positive news to follow up with before the weekend is over.
To modern audiences, Haig is arguably most recognizable as Captain Spaulding from a trilogy of films directed by Rob Zombie. Previous entries included House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, with 3 from Hell set to complete the trifecta soon enough. Actually, Sid’s worked with the filmmaker/musician on a few other projects such as Halloween (2007), The Haunted World of El Superbeasto and The Lords of Salem.
If we’re to pay Haig even more compliments, it’s worth mentioning how his career spans back to the 1960s. Heck, he even played one of King Tut’s henchmen on the Batman TV show starring Adam West! But if we’re to stick to the subject of horror, we’ll point out how his impressive resume also includes Night of the Living Dead 3D, Hatchet 3, Bone Tomahawk and Death House.
Being someone who frequents the convention circuit myself, I’ll take a moment to say I admire how Haig still takes time out of his schedule to meet and greet fans far and wide. In fact, I saw him firsthand at Astronomicon 2 earlier this year, where he proved to be quite the draw.
Be sure to show your support for Sid Haig by seeing 3 from Hell in theaters on September 16th.
