Mozilla partners with news subscription service Scroll to build an ad-free internet
Scroll is an upcoming news subscription service that promises to let you read all your favorite news websites ad-free in exchange for a monthly fee. The service already has some big names in media onboard (including Buzzfeed, Gizmodo Media Group, and Vox Media) and acquired trending news app Nuzzel earlier this month. This week, the company announced another big partnership with Mozilla to test some of Scroll’s ideas in Firefox, via VentureBeat.
The exact details on how Scroll and Mozilla will work together aren’t full clear yet — Scroll says that its still “early days for this partnership,” but VentureBeat says that “small groups of Firefox users will be invited at random to share feedback” and respond to surveys about ad-free browsing...

This drone helped a SWAT team defuse an armed standoff
Last year, Impossible Aerospace built a drone that’s literally filled with batteries, so it can fly for up to two hours on a charge. Now, the company says a 90-minute version of its US-1 quadcopter has proven its worth to a SWAT team in Campbell, California.
On February 8th, a Denny’s restaurant in Campbell was the site of a nearly 12-hour armed standoff, where a man started his 5am day with a cup of coffee but later pulled a gun on a Denny’s employee, according to an earlier report from the San Jose Mercury News. Apparently, the Silicon Valley cops had plenty of toys — police reportedly sent a bomb-sniffing inside the building to take pictures of the suspect as well, as well as an “audible diversionary device.”
But it was the...

Tinder’s Spring Break Mode lets college student swipe ahead of vacation
Tinder users heading to a warm locale for spring break will be able to start swiping on potential matches ahead of time, in Tinder’s first foray into event-based matchmaking. Tinder’s Spring Break Mode is a new feature for college-student users launching this week, which will let Tinder U users check off where they’re going for spring break, then swipe on other college students who are traveling to the same destination.
The feature is only supported for select locations, including Cabo, Mexico; Lake Havasu, Arizona; Las Vegas; Miami; New Orleans; Puerto Rico; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; San Diego, California; a “staycation;” and others. The app will prioritize students who attend the same school and have the same vacation plans, but users...

Samsung expects Galaxy Fold supply to be limited, hints at luxury launch
Samsung is planning to hold another press event in early April for its foldable phone. The Galaxy Fold maker revealed its plans in an interview with The Verge at Mobile World Congress today, and hinted at a high-end luxury launch akin to what we saw with the Apple Watch Edition in its 2015 debut.
“At the beginning of April we’ll have the full press normal Unpacked that we do,” says Kate Beaumont, director of product, services, and commercial strategy at Samsung UK. The press event will provide a closer look at the handset, and will be held a few weeks before the product is expected to hit stores on April 26th, priced at $1,980.
It’s a price that surprised members of the audience at Samsung’s Galaxy S10 launch event last week, and will...

Xiaomi plans to triple its number of European stores by the end of the year
Chinese phone makers have yet to make significant in-roads in the US market, but that doesn’t seem to bother them much — they’re too busy focusing on Europe instead.
The latest example of this shift in attention is Xiaomi’s announcement that it plans to triple its European store count by the end of the year. CNBC reports that the firm wants to go from fewer than 50 stores at the end of 2018 to more than 150 by the end of the 2019. “It’s a big big target for us,” Xiaomi’s senior vice president, Wang Xiang, said.
It’s also part of an established trend. Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus are grabbing more and more of the European market. In the last quarter of 2018, market analysts Canalys reported that they...

HTC’s latest VR headest doesn’t need external trackers, but it feels like it does
After starting out as extremely limited versions of their PC-powered counterparts, standalone VR headsets are starting to get pretty advanced, at least on paper. The most recently announced example of this is the Vive Focus Plus, a self-contained headset that HTC first revealed last week, and which we were able to try for ourselves at Mobile World Congress 2019.
The most obvious upgrade the Vive Focus Plus has over the original Vive Focus is its controllers. Instead of the single controller you got with the original Focus, you now get two. More important however, is the fact that they both now support 6 degrees of freedom (or DoF) rather than the 3DoF found on the original. What this means is that as well as tracking how they rotate,...

Apple Watch may get built-in sleep tracking by 2020
Since its launch in 2015, Apple has increasingly positioned the Apple Watch as a health and fitness device; something that helps users track their workouts and look after their body. But one popular feature has been missing from Apple’s built-in software: sleep-tracking.
Not for much longer, says Bloomberg. The publication reports that Apple is testing sleep tracking functionality and, if it meets standards, plans to add it to the Apple Watch by 2020.
You can already track your sleep on the Apple Watch using third-party apps, but the device has always been hamstrung in this regard by its relatively slim battery life. Apple promises users a full day’s use from the watch before charging it overnight (and this often looks more like two...

This 18,000mAh battery has a phone in it
I told you MWC 2019 would be a show where things got weird, but even I didn’t anticipate a company being wild enough to build a phone with an 18,000mAh battery. But here I am, in awe of the mighty girth of the Energizer Power Max P18K Pop. France’s Avenir Telecom licenses the Energizer brand, and it makes the most of it with devices that push the boundaries of specs and sanity.
This dark blue unit measures in at 18mm of thickness, according to Avenir’s spec sheet, but stacking it side by side with a more conventional smartphone, I’d say a more accurate articulation of its thickness would be about 3.5 iPhones. This phone is immense. Or is it technically a battery with a phone in it?
An epic battery of such proportions had better last a...

The HTC Exodus 1 is getting more blockchain-powered features
HTC’s blockchain phone is getting several new apps today, which start to show us what the phone can really be good for. HTC is adding about 20 new apps, including a personal tracker that can sell your data for cryptocurrency, and it’s also partnering with Opera to allow users to make micropayments to sites. Previously, this phone’s major blockchain feature was the ability to trade and store CryptoKitties.
The HTC Exodus phone now has access to a number of new decentralized apps (known as “Dapps”), which live in an app store that isn’t managed by any specific company, that specifically take advantage of the phone’s hardware. The most interesting addition is an app called Numbers, which tracks user data on walking, sleeping, driving, and...

The fight over launching Spotify in India is about to get messy
The fight over Spotify launching in India might change Indian copyright law and shape how streaming services and labels interact worldwide.
Earlier today, Bloomberg reported that Warner Music Group had asked an Indian court to block Spotify from being able to play music from its catalog on the streaming service. Spotify is set to launch in India, even though it hasn’t secured a license to Warner’s catalog. But, according to Indian law, it might be able to use music from Warner’s publishing division, Warner/Chappell Music, anyway. At the crux of this lawsuit: a 2016 reinterpretation of a 2012 amendment to a 1957 law that Spotify is using in 2019 as leverage against Warner in a global licensing fight.
Spotify and Warner had been in...

Air pollution shines from this alarming map
Traces of burning outline a map of human settlement and industry in a haunting graphic released by the data analysis startup Descartes Labs.
Silver patches and strands represent nitrogen dioxide emissions, a gas produced by combustion that contributes to acid rain, haze, and lung problems. While there are natural sources of nitrogen dioxide, people are major emitters, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Fuel-burning cars, trucks, power plants, factories, and even lawn mowers and construction equipment can pump nitrogen dioxide into the atmosphere. Forest fires and agricultural burning can, too. “You’re looking at a map showing where things are being burned,” says Laura Mazzaro, an atmospheric scientist and environmental...

Elon Musk might be held in contempt of court over a Tesla tweet
The Securities and Exchange Commission has asked a federal judge to hold Tesla CEO Elon Musk in contempt for sending out an inaccurate tweet, according to a court document filed today in the Southern District of New York.
According to SEC officials, Musk violated the rules of a settlement reached last fall regarding his use of Twitter to disclose financial information about the electric carmaker. As part of the settlement, Musk stepped down as chairman of the company, but remained its CEO. He also agreed to seek legal approval before tweeting anything that might materially impact Tesla, a stipulation of the deal Musk himself told 60 Minutes last December had not been implemented. Tesla didn’t respond to requests for comment.

iOS app makers will soon be able to discount subscriptions for current and past customers
Apple will soon give iOS and Mac App Store developers the option to offer discounted subscriptions to current and past customers, as noted by MacRumors and TechCrunch. As it stands now, limited-time subscription rates can only be part of introductory promotions; once you’ve signed up for a service or app, you’re stuck having to pay the regular subscription cost after the discount expires. And developers haven’t had any way of changing that — say, to entice former subscribers back in — without lowering the monthly fee for everyone. You can't take advantage of an introduction offer twice, in other words.
But that’s set to change soon with iOS 12.2: Apple will enable developers to offer promotional subscription discounts to lapsed and...

Nubia’s new wearable puts a 4-inch flexible smartphone on your wrist
There’s been a lot of talk in the last year about the different form factors of devices (laptops, tablets, and smartphones) gradually converging over time. We’ve seen Google and Apple attempt to make the tablet a viable laptop replacement with the iPad Pro and Pixel Slate, and now Samsung and Huawei are merging the smartphone and tablet with their foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Fold and Mate X, respectively.
Less common is the idea of using flexible displays to bring together the form factors of the smartwatch and the smartphone. But that’s exactly what Nubia has done with the Nubia Alpha, a smartwatch with a lot of the functionality of a regular smartphone. We saw it shown off in a non-touchable capacity at IFA last year, and now at M...

How to report a problem on Facebook
Although you may not want to add to the trauma of the moderation staff who spend their days monitoring the worst of Facebook, disturbing and inappropriate content gets posted to the social network each and every day, and the company’s automated software is woefully ill-equipped at finding it and even worse at properly evaluating it. So how do you as a user report a post, message, photo, or other item on Facebook that you believe should be pulled?
Well, the first place to go is Facebook’s own page discussing how to report a violation, rather vaguely titled “Report Something.” The page begins, “We’re sorry you’re having a bad experience on Facebook, and we want to help.” The guide has some broad suggestions on how to handle various...

Avengers: Endgame Directors Congratulate Black Panther For Oscar Wins
Though Avengers: Infinity War came home empty-handed from the 91st Academy Awards, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo were still gracious enough to offer their congrats to Black Panther and the various people who worked to make it an Oscar-winner.
Triumphing in three out of its seven nominated categories, Ryan Coogler’s film not only provided Marvel Studios with its first Academy Awards, but also beat the record for most Oscars won by a single superhero movie. In recognition of these accomplishments, the Russo Brothers took to Twitter with a few kind words:
“Congratulations to our Marvel family @theblackpanther for taking home 3 Oscars last night. A massive applause to Ruth E. Carter, Hannah Beachler and our dear Community pal Ludwig Göransson.”
To break down these name-drops individually, Ruth E. Carter took the Oscar for Best Costume Design, Hannah Beachler and her colleague Jay Hart won for Best Production Design, and Ludwig Göransson – who also happened to work with the Russo Brothers on NBC’s Community – took home the award for Best Original Score.
Black Panther wasn’t quite the only Marvel-related movie to find success on Oscar night though, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also winning for Best Animated Feature Film. Nonetheless, as far as comic book adaptations go, T’Challa’s solo debut was easily the biggest victor of the night, and though many fans were upset that Black Panther lost Best Picture to Green Book, the fact that the feature was nominated at all in the category marks yet another “first” in superhero cinema that Coogler’s film can take credit for.
But while the director now has some high expectations to live up to when he gets to work on Black Panther 2, the Russo Brothers are in the midst of accomplishing a daunting feat of their own following up 2018’s highest global grosser. We’ll see how they fare in this task when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
