A fast-rising star accused of having cinema’s worst 2022, before box office curse Margot Robbie enters the chat

The end of any year inevitably brings with it carefully-curated “Best Of” lists, but there’s also plenty of conversations to be had at the opposite end of the spectrum, too. Unfortunately, Ana de Armas found herself dragged into the dogfight over having the worst 2022 of any star in Hollywood, but her bacon may have been saved by Margot Robbie.
To be fair, de Armas’ year wasn’t an unmitigated disaster, especially when you consider she didn’t appear in a single movie that enjoyed a wide theatrical release. Erotic thriller Deep Water was delayed for for almost a year and a half before being sold off to Hulu and buried, while The Gray Man became Netflix’s biggest hit of the year, and she was about the only element of Andrew Dominik’s Blonde that managed to escape from the wreckage relatively unscathed.

One of horror’s all-time greatest opening scenes remains more than capable of causing palpitations

It’s been over 15 years since the movie was released, and more than 20 since the franchise was initially launched, but fans are still waiting with a mix of patience, hope, and optimism to discover if Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 28 Weeks Later will ever get that sequel we keep hearing about.
At various stages during the last decade and a half, the third installment in the frenetic zombie saga has either been in active development, back to the drawing board, gathering steam, or completely dead in the water. The most recent update was an encouraging one, but regardless of what happens, it’ll take one hell of an effort to top its predecessor’s opening scene.

The middle chapter in a trilogy that should have never been 3 movies drags its heels on streaming

From the very beginning, there was very little chance The Hobbit trilogy would come close to recapturing the magic that made Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy such a landmark achievement in cinema that will endure forever as a story for the ages, but the worst decision without a doubt was to extend the prequels to three films.
It was a call that was clearly and cynically made to extract as much money as possible from the enduring popularity of the blockbuster Middle-earth saga, and if that scans as possibly a touch too harsh, let’s not forget that The Hobbit was only announced to be a trio in July of 2012. That’s a full 16 months after shooting had started, and only five before An Unexpected Journey was due to release.
