Andrew Garfield Reveals Dissatisfaction With Amazing Spider-Man Role
While almost every Spidey fan is convinced that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will appear alongside Tom Holland in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, the star of the Amazing Spider-Man still denies any such collaboration.
In more ways than any diehard enthusiast would be eager to admit, Garfield’s movies lacked certain palates that made the Sam Raimi flicks such an iconic cinematic achievement. Credit where it’s due, though, the actor’s portrayal and dedication to the role made for one of the best iterations of the friendly neighborhood Web-Slinger to date. And so, if Tobey’s fans seem to be fervently speculating about his return, Andrew’s shouldn’t be far behind, despite what the thespian himself has to say on the matter.
As superbly as his performance as the bespoke Peter Parker turned out to be, though, it seems that Garfield wasn’t satisfied with his own performance. At least, that’s what he recently told Total Film (via GamesRadar), discussing the challenges of taking on the role and what he did to prepare.
“My intention… I started studying myth, which is the basis of comic-book films and comic books generally,” He said. “And you go, ‘Oh, right. The responsibility of modern filmmakers is the same as the person telling the story around the campfire.’ Stories are the things that remind us of who we are as human beings, and we actually have an opportunity to provide deep wisdom and medicine, and guidance. So for me, it was like: How do I help to infuse this with as much soul and universality as possible, knowing that millions of young people are going to be watching?”
That’s certainly a peculiar approach to playing Spider-Man if ever we heard one. He further added:
“So it’s not an exercise in selling t-shirts and mugs and Happy Meals, but it’s giving young people the opportunity to feel their own extraordinariness, and their own ordinariness, and seeing someone who’s just like them struggle with those two things living inside of themselves. So for me, it was about that. And then, you know, there’s everyone else that’s serving their own masters.”
At this point, the interviewer noted that Andrew Garfield seemed dissatisfied with the role, and he agreed reluctantly, saying:
“I’m very rarely satisfied with how something turns out. I suffer from that kind of queer, divine dissatisfaction that most creative people have. I remember watching The Social Network for the first time, and me and Jesse were like, ‘Oh, we hate this shit. We hate it.’ Everyone around us was going, ‘What the fuck is wrong with you? It’s incredible.’ We were like, ‘No. I ruined it. They should have cast someone else.’ There’s a healthy version of that, which is the growing down thing. But then sometimes it turns into an indulgence.”
Taking up the mantle of Spidey should be enough to make any star question their acting chops, but I think it’s safe to say that, all things considered, the Amazing Spider-Man lead did a wonderful job of it. What are your thoughts on the matter, though? Sound off below.

Dune Director Says It Is Designed To Be Seen On IMAX
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was hit particularly hard by COVID. The original plan was for it to hit theaters in November 2020, but with lockdowns still in effect and the virus spreading unabated, Warner Bros pushed it back almost an entire year to October 2021 and confirmed that it’d join the rest of their slate with a simultaneous premiere on HBO Max.
Villeneuve wasn’t happy about this, writing a column in Variety saying that the decision showed “absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience” and that AT&T is concerned about their “astronomical debt”.
He’s softened a little now, though is still adamant that Dune needs to be seen on the biggest possible screen with an earth-shaking sound system. In an interview with Deadline, he said:
“It has been dreamed, designed, and shot thinking about IMAX. When you watch this movie on the big screen, it’s almost a physical experience. We designed the movie to be as immersive as possible, and for me, the big screen is part of the language.”
The success of Shang-Chi indicates that life is returning to the theatrical box office, meaning that Warner Bros may be reconsidering their plans for their big upcoming hits to get same-day VOD releases.
It’s also especially important that Dune does well financially as this is merely the first half of Frank Herbert’s book with a follow-up contingent on this making money. Villeneuve’s reasoning was that the story shouldn’t be compressed into a single movie:
“I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie. The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
Fortunately, it’s looking like the quality of the movie won’t be an issue as critics who saw it in Venice gave it almost universal praise and the screening received a seven-minute standing ovation. The only common criticism was that it’s obviously the first half of a story, so fingers crossed it’s a hit and Part 2 is greenlit ASAP.
I can’t wait. Dune hits theaters in just over a month on October 22. Be there.

Tom Hardy Talks Venom’s Place In The Larger Spider-Verse
Venom: Let There Be Carnage arrives in under two weeks and looks awesome. Indications are that they’re leaning hard into the hilarious Venom/Eddie odd couple dynamic, with the added bonus of Woody Harrelson chewing the scenery (and likely various characters) as Carnage. But despite old rumors of a cameo, Spider-Man won’t be joining the party.
The Web-Slinger is closely entangled in both Venom and Carnage’s histories, though the rights’ situation between Disney and Sony prevents him from meeting them on the big screen. That may change soon, however, as Tom Hardy is exploring ways to make this happen.
In a new interview with ET Canada, he discussed where the Venom movies fit into the wider Spider-Man story:
“There’s a Venom-Verse, you know, there’s a Spider-Verse, there’s multiverses, there’s all kinds of canon and lore and mythology to explore both laterally and forward in time. I think with the right people and the right planning, and feedback from the audience, and understanding it’s about making the right choices at the right time… Even with foresight of understanding where things may go already or they wish to go, it’s a combination of all those in the alchemy of what it will be.”
Let’s face it, if Marvel Studios can bring over Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin for Spider-Man: No Way Home, they can get Tom Hardy’s Venom to meet Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
It appears that efforts are indeed underway to get these two together. We’ve heard that Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige is attempting to broker a deal to bring the two characters together. Relations between the two companies have thawed after the drama of 2019, with the upcoming Morbius appearing to contain a poster featuring Spidey.
A good indication of what they’re planning came from Feige himself, who said in a 2019 interview that:
[Spider-Man] also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.
My hope is Venom 3 is a crazy superhero mashup. I’d love to see this tackle the 1990s comic arc ‘Maximum Carnage’, in which symbiotes take over New York City and Spider-Man and Venom team up to stop them. But, however they do it, I just want to see Tom Holland reacting to the bonkers Tom Hardy Venom on the big screen.
Maybe it’s too much to expect a surprise Venom cameo in No Way Home, but I suspect that we’ll start hearing rumblings about this crossover early in 2022.
In the meantime, Venom: Let There Be Carnage hits theaters on October 1st.
