When designing tools for use in space, versatility is important. Each pound of material you bring with you is going to cost extra, so having one tool that can do multiple jobs is handy. Plus: it’s space! You never know what situations you’re going to come across. These demands inspired Yale roboticist Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio and her team to develop what is basically robotic skin — a flexible material that can animate any inanimate object.
The material’s proper name is OmniSkin, and it’s made from sheets of elastic studded with sensors and actuators. It can be fixed in place with zips or other basic ties, and it’s modular, meaning each small sheet can be attached to any other in a number of ways. “[They’re] like Legos,” Kramer-Bottiglio...

India’s search for a solution continues fruitlessly in the ongoing Asia Cup. However, here we attempt to explain why India’s middle order is actually a red herring, masking a far more serious issue - the top order’s tendency to be over-cautious while setting targets.

The appointment of Chandimal continues the SLC’s rotational policy of appointing captains, something that has been a problem over the last 18 months.I am most tired during my period on Thursdays. It’s random fact, but one that I never confidently knew about myself until recently. When I was a teenager, my periods were agonizing; they were painful, unpredictable, difficult to track, and basically debilitating. The intense cramps and dizziness caused me to frequently miss school, so much so that my doctor recommended I skip periods altogether and start birth control to regulate my cycles. I didn’t look back for a decade.
But before I knew it, 114 months had gone by, and now as a grown woman, I realized I didn’t know my body at all. Aside from the occasional breakthrough bleeding, I had no concept of what a real period felt like. The pill, with its notorious side effects, had taken it...
The above photo is of Backdoor Pipeline, an installation piece by the famous artist Richard Serra. Like most of Serra’s work, the picture doesn’t really do it justice. It’s enormous, designed to be walked through, and the sheer weight of the bent steel is tangible when you’re in the room with it. It shapes the space around it, remaking the relationship between the viewer and the piece.
The pink lines aren’t part of the piece; I’ve added them to drive home how much it looks like Goatse.
(Quick note: I’m not going to link to Goatse or describe it in any way because it’s gross and awful. If you don’t already know what it is, please just close this tab, do not google it, and forget this ever happened.)
Turns out, a lot of Serra’s work bears...
Film is an expressive medium — at least as flexible as books are, in terms of the potential for variety and nuance. So how to explain the way cinema processes so many diverse, nuanced books into generic, nearly identical hunks of cookie-cutter product? And the problem seems particularly pronounced with books aimed at younger readers. When novels as tonally and creatively wide-ranging as Bridge to Terabithia, The Dark is Rising, the first five Spiderwick Chronicles novels, and Cirque du Freak all enter the screen-adaptation machine and come out looking and feeling nearly identical, it’s clear that the problem isn’t with the source material, it’s with filmmakers who are suffering a lack of imagination.
Or maybe it’s just a lack of freedom...
Researchers at Deezer have developed an AI system capable of associating certain songs with moods and intensities, as spotted by VentureBeat. The work is described in a newly published paper on Arxiv.org titled “Music Mood Detection Based on Audio Lyrics With Deep Neural Nets.“
To determine a song’s musical mood, the team considered both the audio signal and the lyrics. To start, they fed audio signals into a neural network, along with models that reconstruct the linguistic contexts of words. Then, to teach it how to determine the mood of a song, they used the Million Song Dataset (MSD), which is a collection of metadata for over 1 million contemporary songs. In particular, they used Last.fm’s dataset, which assigns identifiers to tracks...
Porsche says that it’s getting out of the diesel business — for good. In a release this morning, it explains that amidst falling demand for diesel vehicles, and a growing interest in hybrids, it “has decided to no longer offer diesel propulsion in future.”
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume notes that his company isn’t “demonising diesel” with the announcement, and says that the fuel still important worldwide, even though it’s never been a huge part of the company’s offerings. There’s been indications of this attitude in recent months: the German automaker has been increasingly interested in electric and hybrid vehicles. Last year, the company unveiled the 2019 Cayenne SUV , which was notably missing a diesel version, and later unveiled an updated...

The third season of Serial starts off with host Sarah Koenig introducing the place where the podcast listener will reside for the duration of its run. It’s a stunning, almost cinematic monologue. Koenig takes the listener through Cleveland’s Justice Center Complex, explaining that the “hideous but practical,” complex is an entire justice system, housing courts, jails, offices for state prosecutors and sheriffs, and city police. If this were a film, it would be one of those single-shot takes, taking you from the basement of the building, up the elevator, to...

Tom Holland is pretty bad when it comes to keeping secrets – you know it, I know it, and MCU architect Kevin Feige very much knows it, too.
It’s all part of the actor’s shtick, of course, as being one of the youngest members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and indeed the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, gives him a sort of innocent (and sometimes impish) recklessness, whereby he tends to get away with spoiling Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s title, or the fact that Homecoming will lead to a whole Spidey trilogy, without too many consequences from the Powers That Be.
On this occasion, though, it’s actually not Holland who’s the one dropping the spoiler. No, the actor’s been keeping pretty quite as of late, with set photos doing the spoiling for him instead. And down in the gallery below you’ll see the latest snap, which might just give us our first – albeit very blurry look – at Spidey’s stealth suit.
As those who read the comics will know, Parker first invents the suit to help him fight the Hobgoblin, with the apparel warping light and sound to help turn Spider-Man invisible. We’ve been told that the hero will have more than one suit in Far From Home as well, and while we already know that he’ll be getting his Homecoming costume back, it’s certainly possible that he’ll be going into stealth mode at some point, too.
For now, though, all we can do is speculate, as there are many questions yet to be answered, but if there’s one takeaway from this new set photo (assuming it’s even legit, of course), it’s that Peter Parker will be doing some sneaking around during his vacation to Europe.
On July 5th, 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home gets the ball rolling on Phase 4 of Marvel’s cinematic universe, and we simply can’t wait to see what’s in store.
