China’s largest private automaker is building a satellite network now, too

Image: Geely

The largest private automaker in China is getting into the satellite business. Chinese automotive giant Geely has broadened its reach to include everything from trucking, to high-speed trains, to passenger drones, to Volvo over the last decade or so. But its newest effort could tie those things all together, as Geely just announced it’s going to build its own satellite network to enable what it calls a “smart three-dimensional mobility ecosystem.”

Geely announced late Monday that it will erect a satellite production facility and testing center in the port city of Taizhou in the Zhejiang Province that the Chinese giant calls home. The facility will be capable of building a “variety of different satellite models,” some of which may be...

Chris Matthews just quit Hardball live on air

Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate In Las Vegas Ahead Of Nevada Caucuses Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Chris Matthews apparently just quit “Hardball With Chris Matthews” live on air. The abrupt exit of the MSNBC anchor happened after columnist Laura Bassett accused Matthews of sexually harassing her in 2016, and after a terse exchange with presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren about believing women in workplace disputes.

“Compliments on a woman’s appearance that some men, including me, might have once incorrectly thought were okay, were never okay,” Matthews said. “Not then, and certainly not today. And for making such comments on the past, I’m sorry.”

“That was a lot to take in just now, I’m sure,” said a surprised-looking Steve Kornacki, in response to Matthews’...

Oppo’s new smartwatch looks just like the Apple Watch

Oppo has given us its best look yet at its upcoming smartwatch on the way — and it looks almost exactly like an Apple Watch.

X-Force Writer Reveals Plans For The Abandoned Fox Franchise

Prior to being taken over by Disney, there was no denying that Fox’s major comic book properties were in dire need of a refresh. The main installments in the long-running X-Men series were really starting to run out of steam following the disappointing Apocalypse and the disastrous Dark Phoenix, but spinoffs like Deadpool and Logan roared to critical and commercial success, likely because they were free from the studio-mandated shackles that dictated the creative direction of their fellow mutants.

While the group may have been introduced and played mostly for laughs in Deadpool 2, an X-Force movie was initially green-lit as far back as 2013, with Kick-Ass 2’s Jeff Wadlow set to write and direct. The idea was that the X-Men sequels would continue to churn out PG-13 blockbusters to keep the box office money coming in, while the likes of the Deadpool franchise and X-Force would take more risks and appeal to more mature audiences.

Unfortunately, the proposed X-Force spinoff remained in development hell, and never got off the ground before Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Wadlow eventually dropped out, and at one stage Ryan Reynolds was set to co-write the script alongside Joe Carnahan, although Drew Goddard was set to direct before the entire roster of mutants were taken off the table completely once the Mouse House had acquired their newest toy.

In a recent interview, Wadlow offered some details on how he planned to approach his version of X-Force, and it certainly sounds a lot more interesting than anything Bryan Singer or Simon Kinberg managed to bring to the dying embers of the X-Men franchise.

“What I can share about my take on the property, is that it asked if X-Men was about mutants who get to go to private school with Wolverine and Professor X, and have the Blackbird swooping down to pick them up, what about the mutants that have to go to public school? What about the ones who don’t have the benefactor looking out for them, and what about the kids who have to figure it out on their own? We then would have introduced the darker, more militant mentor in the form of Cable.”

Focusing the X-Force movie on a group of disenfranchised young mutants with Cable in charge would have been a unique spin on the established X-Men template, and would have looked to have emulated the more mature tone of Logan, but Fox’s final effort instead wound up being one of the biggest box office bombs in recent memory.

Simon Pegg Criticizes Paramount For Mishandling Star Trek

It’s going-on four years since we last saw a Star Trek movie in theaters. Beyond had an underwhelming box office performance, and subsequent efforts to get a sequel off the ground have yet to lift it out of development hell. Now, the possibility of another reboot and some fresh comments from Simon Pegg have only added to the uncertainty.

In a new interview with TotalFilm (via GamesRadar), Pegg has criticized Paramount Pictures (the studio behind the first three movies), explaining why he thinks budgeting the Star Trek franchise in line with Marvel Studios projects is a false economy.

The fact is, ‘Star Trek’ movies don’t make Marvel money. They make maybe $500 million at the most, and to make one now, on the scale they’ve set themselves, is $200 million. You have to make three times that to make a profit”.

Paramount didn’t really take advantage of the 50th anniversary. The regimen at the time dropped the ball on the promo of the film. And we’ve lost momentum. I think losing Anton [Yelchin] was a huge blow to our little family, and our enthusiasm to do another one might have been affected by that. So I don’t know.

Pegg had an expanded remit for Beyond’s production, co-writing the script as well as maintaining his on-screen role as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. A boyhood Trekkie, it’s understandable why he has so much invested in the current state of the franchise, but these comments are more substantial than just a superfan’s ravings.

Pegg is right to point out Star Trek has never been a blockbuster IP in the way other summer mega-movies are. Even Star Trek Into Darkness, to date the highest grossing film, “only” checked in with $467.4 million, which is well below the box office billions we’ve come to associate with comparative name franchises.

Now, there’s undoubtedly more than just money at stake in Star Trek 4’s current production limbo. As Pegg also went on to say, co-star Yelchin’s devastating death has impacted everyone concerned with the reboot series.

Ultimately, you can look at the whole situation as a perfect storm, one that leaves future installments further rather than closer to fruition. I’ve no doubt one day we’ll get more Star Trek on the big screen, but at the moment, no one involved looks any nearer to making it a reality.
