LG announces V40 ThinQ with a total of five cameras
LG just made the V40 ThinQ official in Korea (via Phandroid). The announcement confirms a five-camera handset, with three cameras mounted on its rear and two on the front, just as we’ve seen previously in in the leaks.
The announcement confirms that the device will have a slightly larger 6.4-inch screen than last year’s model, and will be available in red, blue and gray. A rear-mounted fingerprint scanner can also be seen in LG’s teaser trailer that matches earlier leaks. Although LG doesn’t show the V40’s front, previous leaks, that have now proven to be accurate, revealed an edge-to-edge notched display.
Otherwise, the V40 looks a lot like its V30 predecessor with a couple of design touches from this year’s G7. Reports suggest the...

Google Search celebrates 20 years with Street View tour of 1998 garage office
Google was incorporated on September 4, 1998, but the company has always celebrated its birthday on September 27th for over a decade. Today, it’s marking 20 years of Google Search with a slew of interactive features: there’s a video doodle highlighting popular searches over the years, a time capsule of Easter egg Search terms, a street view tour of the original garage in which the company was founded, and finally, a Google Images desktop redesign.
While the video doodle is cute and straightforward enough, there are plenty of hidden gems to be found inside Susan Wojcicki’s Menlo Park garage, where Larry Page and Sergey Brin set up the first Google office. You can click around to take a virtual tour of the entire home, which has been...

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating his MacBook
Robert Mueller surfaced from the Russia investigation this afternoon to ask for help — tech support, specifically. The special counsel and former FBI director was spotted in the Georgetown Apple store today, working with a Genius bar employee to get help with a MacBook Pro. The photo was taken by Meghan Pianta, who works in communications in DC; we initially caught it via Washington Examiner reporter Kelly Cohen.
In the photo, you can see a pained, confused look on the special counsel’s face. What is he looking at? We tried calling the Apple store to find out, but were stymied by endless phone trees. An investigator who went on location on behalf of The Verge said there was no sighting of either Mueller or the employee seen helping him.

Amazon is opening a new store that only sells products with 4-star ratings and above
Look, nevermind that Amazon’s reviews are getting less and less trustworthy; I still often find myself scanning a thing’s barcode or just pulling up its Amazon listing when I’m at a store to get a sense of whether it’s a decent buy. With its latest store, Amazon isn’t leaving that question up in the air anymore. The first-ever Amazon 4-star opens in New York City’s Soho neighborhood tomorrow. And as the name implies, everything on its shelves has earned at least a four-star review average from Amazon’s customers.
The store will also have new and “trending” items and best-sellers regardless of review score. Of course you’ll find a ton of Amazon hardware, but there’s plenty of third-party stuff too covering “devices, consumer electronics,...

Facebook’s former head of Messenger calls WhatsApp co-founder a “new standard of low-class”
If the sudden resignation of Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger wasn’t enough to make it a tense and taxing week at Facebook headquarters, a new Forbes interview with WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton isn’t going to help matters much. In the interview, Acton was critical of Facebook’s monetization strategy for the app he and Jan Koum sold to the company for $16 billion. He also seemed to voice a sense of self-guilt for ever being part of the deal that made him extremely wealthy, saying “I sold my users’ privacy to a larger benefit. I made a choice and a compromise. And I live with that every day.” Acton exited Facebook a year before his final batch of stock options vested, a decision that ultimately cost him north of $800...

Fortnite cross-play on PS4 ushers in a new era of the console wars
Console players everywhere are rejoicing with the news that after months of bullish denials, Sony capitulated and will soon allow PS4 players to link up with people on Xbox, Switch, and mobile platforms — at least for select third-party games. While the cross-play beta for Fortnite gets most of the spotlight here, it’s worth remembering that this functionality has huge implications for how people purchase and think about consoles, potentially even eroding some of the distinctions we’ve built up over the years about existing platforms.
Console wars are all about differences, the things you can get on one platform that you can’t get on another. In the last console generation, the PS3 had a more sophisticated cadre of exclusives, the Wii U...

Amazon’s entire Fire TV lineup is on sale right now
Your search for a good set-top box under $100 just got easier, as Amazon has discounted its Fire TV Cube to $79.99, down from its regular $119.99 price. Like the $69.99 Fire TV, which is currently $39.99 for Prime subscribers, the Cube can handle broadcasting 4K HDR content through a variety of apps. But as for what to expect after paying an admittedly small premium on Amazon’s Fire TV Cube, its integrated far-field microphones let you issue voice commands without a remote (though a remote is included, should you find yourself out of their range.)
Alexa in the Fire TV Cube can control your entertainment center, simplifying tasks like setting the volume and inputting commands in your cable box. Think of it as a voice-activated mediator...

Kayaker blessed by a seal, slapped in the face with an octopus
A man kayaking off the coast of New Zealand’s South Island was clobbered in the face with an airborne octopus unleashed by a seal, Yahoo7 News reports. But here’s the best part: the entire inter-species aquatic slap fight was caught on camera, so you can watch it as many times as you need to get through the day.
The video shows the seal rearing up out of the water with the octopus clutched in its mouth, and then flinging it at kayaker Kyle Mulinder. Mulinder’s Instagram bio says he’s a GoPro content creator, and he told Yahoo7 News: “My face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Fellow kayaker Taiyo Masuda, who also describes himself as part of the GoPro family, says in the video’s description that he shot the scuffle on...

Dish’s AirTV Player can now record two OTA channels at once with new adapter
Last week, Amazon introduced the Fire TV Recast, a box with two TV tuners and a hard drive. When plugged into an antenna, the Recast can stream (and record) live over-the-air channels — usually ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and a slew of random stuff depending on your location — and lets you watch that content on your Fire TV, Echo Show, or your smartphone. It’s a nerdy, niche device squarely aimed at cord cutters, and I can’t wait to try it.
Dish has offered something somewhat similar to this (minus the built-in hard disk) for a while now. Two products, actually. The $119.99 AirTV is closest to the Recast; it’s a dual-tuner box that can record two shows at once and seamlessly integrate OTA channels with the Sling TV subscription service. They...

First Full X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer Soars Online
After numerous delays and false starts, the marketing for X-Men: Dark Phoenix is finally beginning to ramp up, and not a moment too soon.
Providing it stays true to Chris Claremont’s titular comic – and it appears that it will – the film will follow Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as she encounters the famous Phoenix Force, which ends in a radical transformation for the all-powerful mutant. Those same alterations are enough to place her fellow X-Men – namely Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) on red alert, and now, we finally have a proper look at how all this is set to play out.
Yes, at long last, Fox has released the first trailer for Dark Phoenix and while the push to make it more dramatic than the unintentionally campy Apocalypse is no doubt a good move, we can’t help but to feel a bit underwhelmed by the footage here. I mean, in a year that’s also going to bring us Avengers 4, Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman 1984, to name just three, the latest installment in the X-Men franchise is going to need to do A LOT to catch moviegoers’ attention. And though this preview does have its moments – and again, it looks like a big improvement on Apocalypse – we still can’t imagine it doing very much to ease the general feeling of worry surrounding the pic.
Frankly, it’s been a long, troubled road to theaters for Dark Phoenix, with the film being plagued by more negative buzz and concerning reports than we can count along the way. At this point, it seems as if Fox has all but written it off, and while we won’t pass final judgement based on one trailer alone – and the first one, no less – we can’t say that what we’ve seen here makes us want to run out to theaters on opening night to catch the movie.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), among others, and aiming to “revolutionize” the superhero genre as we know it, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be with us on February 14th, and we can only hope that it ends up being a lot more exciting that what we just watched.

Halloween Producers Looking To Do A TV Show
How do you breathe new life into a dormant horror franchise that’s fallen on hard times in recent years? Easy: you put together a sequel that honors the original while also ignoring all other films in the Halloween timeline.
That’s basically the strategy put in place by David Gordon Green and co-writer Danny McBride, who are the creative minds behind the Halloween of 2018. It’s said to be steeped in the rich history of John Carpenter’s iconic film, all the while taking the legacy of Michael Myers in a totally new and fresh direction.
It’s a tricky balancing act no matter which way you spin it, but it seems that the duo have pulled it off, with early reviews being extremely positive. And with the first box office projections looking strong as well, it’s clear that Michael has a bright future ahead of him. But where does he go next?
Well, another big screen sequel is almost a given at this point, but how about a TV show? Yes, it’s been discussed a few times over the last several years but to date, nothing’s materialized. Not for a lack of trying, though, as producer Malek Akkad tells Bloody Disgusting that it’s something they’re looking at very closely.
“You know, it’s something that we’ve had for a long time and I definitely want to see it done, When we started doing it… this was in development about a decade ago. At the time, I think the thought was we don’t want to cannibalize the theatrical. Let’s keep it as a theatrical event movie. If that starts flowing down, we would address TV. Nowadays, we all know, TV is pulling out ahead of theatrical in a way that surprised everybody, certainly me.”
As for how Michael would factor into the show, Akkad wouldn’t say much, but did confirm that everyone’s favorite serial killer is definitely involved.
“The one we were developing and that I still feel very strongly about, he’s involved in it. That’s really all I can say about it now. It wouldn’t look anything like your traditional Halloween movie, but he’s in there as are a lot of other characters but used in different and interesting ways. I wish I could talk more about it but it’s something we’re looking at very closely.”
Finally, Akkad stressed that for now, the main focus is Green’s film. Once that’s done, then perhaps they’ll look into a TV show a bit more.
“Just getting across the finish line for this one, that’s the goal right now,” Akkad said. “We’ve got the wind at our back, everything looks good. Before we start talking about anything else, it’s all about the movie. [The show] is something that there’s been some discussions.”
While it’s nice to hear that television is still something that the producers behind Halloween are discussing, we imagine it’ll be some time before Michael makes his way to the small screen. As we said above, the upcoming sequel looks to be a hit and should it wind up doing as well as analysts expect it to, the property will probably remain in theaters for the foreseeable future.
