China has successfully launched its first major interplanetary mission to Mars. The launch begins a long seven-month journey through deep space, and once the mission reaches the Red Planet, China could become just the second nation ever to land and operate a rover on the Martian surface.

Called Tianwen-1, China’s mission consists of a Martian orbiter, lander, and rover. The trio launched on top of the Long March 5 from China’s Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in the early morning hours of July 23rd. The Long March 5 is one of China’s most powerful rockets, and this mission marked just the fourth launch ever for this type of vehicle.

A Beloved Adam Sandler Movie Is Returning To Netflix Next Month

Most people would probably agree that Adam Sandler is one of the most divisive actors out there. Though his work usually performs pretty well financially, and always manages to draw in a crowd whether it’s on Netflix or in theaters, his lowbrow comedic efforts never go over well with critics, who constantly call him out for phoning in his performances.

That being said, he’s certainly capable of stepping it up and delivering awards-worthy work. I mean, just look at Uncut Gems, a film that many thought would earn him an Oscar nomination. There’s no doubt the man is talented, but he also knows what his fans want and most of them genuinely enjoy those aforementioned comedic efforts. No matter how low the humor stoops.

Take Mr. Deeds, for example. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 22%, this 2002 film was trashed by critics yet if you ask many Sandler fans, they’ll happily rewatch it any time it comes on the television. Indeed, it’s a favorite among his followers and though it’s been away from Netflix for a while, it’ll be returning to the platform on August 1st.

Mr. Deeds

A remake of the 1936 Frank Capra movie Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, which itself is based on the short story Opera Hat by Clarence Budington Kelland, the pic sees Sandler playing a “sweet-natured, small-town guy” who finds himself inheriting a controlling stake in a massive corporation and begins to find himself way in over his head.

As far as Sandler efforts go, Mr. Deeds is a pretty standard affair and doesn’t really see the actor moving too far out of his comfort zone, but it’s a perfectly harmless and enjoyable watch if you’re into his brand of comedy. And with the film now making its way back to Netflix next month, no doubt many an Adam Sandler fan will be revisiting it quite soon.

Palpatine’s Resurrection In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker May’ve Been George Lucas’ Idea

The return of Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is one of the most controversial elements of what’s an all-round controversial movie. It’s hard to know where the concept of bringing Darth Sidious back from the dead came from, but fans tend to blame Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, director J.J. Abrams or writer Chris Terrio. It’s worth wondering, though, whether the idea actually came from George Lucas.

Abrams has said in the past that he consulted with Lucas and picked his brain for ideas on how to conclude the Skywalker saga in the best way possible. We don’t know what exactly the fruits of their conversations were, but could Palpatine’s resurrection have been one of them? Perhaps, as Games Radar has got some evidence which could possibly suggest so.

As fans may know, 90s EU comic book series Dark Empire reveals the Emperor survived Return of the Jedi. In an interview with Underground Online, writer Tom Veitch explained that he initially pitched Vader’s comeback in the book, but it was Lucas himself who came up with the notion of bringing Palpatine back instead.

“George Lucas told me personally that he loved it,” Veitch revealed “Some people had a problem with the bringing back of the Emperor. But as I have explained elsewhere, we did that under George Lucas’ direction. Originally we asked him if we could bring back Darth Vader, assuming that the Empire would want to perpetuate the image of Vader in order to strike fear into the hearts of billions. So they would put somebody else inside the Vader costume, of course. But George nixed that and told us we could bring back the Emperor.”

Dark Empire was always a clear influence on TROS, as it set the precedent for reviving Palpatine, so the revelation that Lucas is responsible for that in the comic is a big one. Even if Lucas didn’t suggest the idea to Abrams himself, if the filmmakers got it from the comics, then that means that the germ of the idea to reverse the villain’s death does come from Lucas, after all.

This isn’t a cast-iron chain of logic, it has to be said, as Ian McDiarmid has stated that Lucas directly told him the Emperor died in Return and that was it. This uncovered quote, though, does suggest that his controversial comeback in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker could be followed all the way back to the saga’s creator.

Watch how the Nintendo Switch runs Crysis Remastered in Digital Foundry’s graphical review

Image: Crytek

Thirteen years after the game’s original release, the question “But can it run Crysis ” continues to be an in-joke among gamers, referring to whether any new piece of hardware is powerful enough to run Crytek’s graphically demanding game. Now, we have proof that Nintendo’s handheld Switch is capable of the task; Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry, an outlet renowned for their technical breakdowns, created a video that shows the differences between every version of Crysis released thus far and how the Nintendo Switch runs the game.

I myself was kind of shocked that Crytek managed to create a competent port of Crysis Remastered on Switch. It’s not all good, though. Here are a few takeaways from Digital Foundry’s video:

  • It’s fairly crisp for a...

Edgar Wright To Direct New Ghost Story Movie Stage 13

Edgar Wright has lined up his next project. The director has signed on with Amblin Partners to helm Stage 13, an adaptation of a short story by Simon Rich, who will also be writing the movie.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, Stage 13 “follows the ghost of a silent film-era actress that has haunted the titular soundstage of a backlot for decades. After a struggling director meets the ghost, they find an unexpected kinship and team to make their mark on the world.”

Sounds like this’ll be continuing Wright’s forays into genre pieces. Of course, we recently saw him tackle the heist formula with aplomb in Baby Driver, and Last Night in Soho will (eventually) see him return to horror for the first time since Shaun of the Dead. The film had been scheduled to premiere this September but that’s now been pushed back into April 2021. It’s confusing then to describe Stage 13 as his next project when Soho is still to be released, but that’s just a fraction of the ways that coronavirus has turned the world upside down.

Edgar Wright

Excited that Edgar Wright’s got another film in the works? Drop a comment with your thoughts below. One thing that didn’t come with this news was a release date. Considering full-scale movie/TV production is just barely coalescing from the global lockdown’s effects, I wouldn’t expect to see Stage 13 till 2022 at the earliest (and that’s probably being optimistic).

Lucky for fans, though, there’s another movie in the can already. And if it’s anywhere near as good as Shaun of the Dead, you’re welcome to buy me a ticket in advance. If it’s anywhere near as irritating as Baby Driver, well, you’re welcome to keep it to yourself. Just because I said it tackled the heist genre with aplomb that doesn’t mean I enjoyed it.
