Review: ‘The Outwaters’ leads us into the dark and never looks back

In the vast darkness of the Mojave desert, four friends are camped out, preparing to make a music video together. As they sit in their tents and try to get rest, thunderous booms and mysterious ripples of light in the sky disrupt them. Soon enough, they will be gone, consumed by something unknowable and awful in the dark, and their footage will be all that’s left of them.

Such is the premise for Robbie Banfitch’s The Outwaters, a wild descent into hell (or another dimension, perhaps?) that promises to disorient and disquiet the viewer. The film isn’t afraid to march forward hand-in-hand with us into the darkness, no matter how much blood, tears, and screeching there is along the way.

James Gunn teases a DCU series so insanely bizarre it needs to happen as soon as possible

You don’t have to play Six Degrees of Separation – or Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, for that matter – to figure out an easy way for James Gunn to bring one of his most frequent and trusted collaborators into the DCU.

The filmmaker came right ahead and admitted he’s planning to find room for all of his Marvel Cinematic Universe cohorts once Chapter 1 – Gods & Monsters begins to take shape, and it just so happens that one of the sole survivors to emerge from the smoldering rubble of The Suicide Squad alive was Weasel.

An underrated sequel that aged even better after 3 disastrous failed reboots nukes the Netflix charts

Despite very recent history pointing out no less than three times that it isn’t something general audiences are interested in seeing again, there’s an air of inevitability to yet another Terminator reboot. There’s one small positive, though, and that it’s each failed reinvention of the franchise paints Jonathan Mostow’s underrated Rise of the Machines in a better light.

There was a hefty amount of pressure on the filmmaker heading into the project, which was of course completely understandable when he was tasked with not only following up James Cameron’s back-to-back classics, but doing so after a decade-long absence with the single most expensive production in the history of cinema at the time.
