‘The Marvels’ breaking a surprising MCU runtime record could be what Disney needs to claw back the $965 million it flushed down the drain

It’s all riding on The Marvels. Not only has the MCU had a rough year of it, after kicking off Phase Five with a flop threequel and a Disney Plus dud, Disney itself has always had a punishing 2023 thanks to a run of box office disappointments. Enter the aforementioned Brie Larson sequel, then, which the studio must be desperately hoping can recapture the success of its 2019 predecessor. Seeing as its haters do their best to drown out the truth, it always bears repeating: Captain Marvel earned $1 billion worldwide.

Nevertheless, it has to be said that a few The Marvels updates have got us worried. For once, director Nia DaCosta’s promise that it’s going to be “wacky and silly” is more of a threat to audiences who are still recovering from the sight of M.O.D.O.K.’s rear-end in Quantumania than she was probably intending. What’s more, according to the latest rumors, the film could end up being the shortest MCU movie of them all by quite some margin. As per alleged intel, The Marvels may clock in at just 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Seeing as the current record-holder is The Incredible Hulk with 1 hour and 52 minutes, that’s a severely shortened runtime by Marvel standards and much closer to something you’d expect from Pixar or Disney’s animated movies. On the face of it, then, this isn’t encouraging, as Marvel fans generally aren’t ones to complain when the MCU gets mammoth-sized — just look at how popular the bladder-busting Avengers: Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are.

On the other hand, a slight runtime might be exactly what the doctor ordered. One of the biggest criticisms used in conjunction with the threat of superhero fatigue is the bloat that people feel has happened to the genre, with there just being too much Marvel and DC content around. But if DaCosta can hand it something that’s snappy and energetic with a sense of fun to it then it could easily be a big hit with audiences, earning the kind of positive word of mouth that results in a breakaway hit.

We know that Disney threw away a whopping total of $965 million on four projects that flopped hard — with Marvel’s Quantumania and Secret Invasion among them — so The Marvels repeating the performance of its precursor and bringing home $1 billion would be the perfect way to end 2023 on a redeeming note for the Mouse House.

James Gunn would be losing one of his breakout DCU stars to Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’ if MCU casting was a democracy

Can you believe that Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot was announced back in 2019 and we’ve still yet to get any official casting announcements? Well, in the absence of any, professional fan casters have offered up an endless procession of their personal picks for the third cinematic iteration of the First Family. And one of these might’ve just lit the fire for Marvel Studios to poach one of the Most Valued Players from James Gunn‘s upcoming DCU.

Redditor u/MarvelsReporter took to the r/MCUTheories sub to share their preferred Fantastic Four lineup, which combined run-of-the-mill choices like John Krasinski and Vanessa Kirby as Reed and Sue with left-field picks like Harrison Osterfield as Johnny Storm and John Cena as Ben Grimm aka The Thing. And the latter in particular is the definition of a “just so crazy it could actually work” casting ploy.

The ensuing thread became full of those heartily agreeing that, after seeing him as Christopher Smith in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, Cena would actually be perfect as the Ever-Loving Thing.

It seems even Vacation Friends 2 isn’t putting people off the idea!

Cena’s comedic timing and improv skills are what’s really doing it for people.

One thing’s for sure, though, Gunn would be sad to see him go if he did jump ship to the MCU.

Give it a moment, and you’ll get it…

Of course, with Gunn keen to usher in a new age of peace and prosperity between Marvel and DC, Cena could conceivably be part of both the MCU and the DCU. Especially if The Thing was a voice role for him, in the same way that Rocket Raccoon was for Bradley Cooper. Nevertheless, Marvel Studios doesn’t make its decision based on popular vote, so we’ll just have to wait for Kevin Feige to announce from on high who’s really going to star in Fantastic Four, currently scheduled for May 2, 2025.

A Marvel movie that earned $760 million but is still considered one of the MCU’s biggest mistakes has one mystery fans can’t solve

The MCU has raised the bar of success so high that even a film that earned a whopping $760 million across the globe is still viewed as one of the franchise’s biggest goofs. Yes, Thor: Love and Thunder might have killed it at the box office, but its less-than-stellar critical reception and savage appraisal from fans has doomed it to linger down among the least-liked MCU entries, ironically alongside its forsaken forebear, Thor: The Dark World.

Marvel folks have picked apart every facet of this film in the past year and a bit since it thundered into theaters yet, but there’s surprisingly still one mystery that is mystifying a lot of people. Specifically, the question of how Mjolnir is able to reassemble itself in Love and Thunder, when it was content to remain in bits through Ragnarok and didn’t even reconstitute itself when Thor desperately needed a weapon in Avengers: Infinity War. As one viral Reddit post asked:

Given that Mjolnir’s sentience is a major revelation in Love and Thunder, this is a fair question, although it does have to be said that the movie itself provides an acceptable explanation. “The point was that Thor invoked it with the power to do that for the sake of Jane,” commented one user. However, this then provoked the response, “But if it had the power to do it for Jane, why couldn’t it do it for Thor?” The answer to this, though, is of course: “Because it didn’t have an oath to do that.”

Like another commenter explained, “If [T]hor realized his true powers, he could have. He kinda did it by accident for Jane. He is still early in his learning phase.” Aw, bless the little guy. “Just a wee lad of 1500,” quipped someone else.

So, technically, the solution to this mystery is there in the movie itself, but any confusion is more than acceptable considering the changing rules of what Mjolnir can and can’t do and also of the concept of Thor’s evolving abilities. As one comic book reader helpfully elaborated, “Thor inheriting the Odin-Force after Odin’s death, and becoming even more powerful than Odin ever was, is a running theme in the comics. The movies have done a poor job at explaining how his magic works.”

Who knows if director Taika Waititi plans to address this in the Thor 5 that he’s threatening to make.
