Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Facebook is banning ads that promise to cure, prevent, or otherwise incite panic around COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, the company has confirmed in a statement given to Business Insider. The company added that it has similar policies for its Marketplace platform where Facebook users can buy and sell items.

”We recently implemented a policy to prohibit ads that refer to the coronavirus and create a sense of urgency, like implying a limited supply, or guaranteeing a cure or prevention,” the company told Business Insider, “We also have policies for surfaces like Marketplace that prohibit similar behavior.”

The statement comes less than a month after the company announced that it would be removing misinformation about...

Toyota steers $400 million to self-driving startup Pony.ai

Pony.ai, a self-driving startup based in Silicon Valley and Guangzhou, China, is deepening its ties to Toyota. The two companies announced a pilot program to test self-driving cars on public roads in two Chinese cities, Beijing and Shanghai. The Japanese auto giant plans to invest $400 million in Pony.ai, valuing the startup at $3 billion.

Pony.ai has been working with Toyota since 2019 on public autonomous vehicle testing. With this new investment, their relationship will become even closer, with the automaker and the startup “co-developing” mobility products like “mobility services.”

Slickwraps apologizes to customers after comically bad data breach

Slickwraps, which makes vinyl skins for phones, tablets, and other electronics, announced last week that it suffered a data breach. The announcement came after many customers received an email from Slickwraps that appeared to be sent by a hacker claiming to have stolen customer data.

What’s unusual about this case is how the hacker apparently breached Slickwraps’ systems: not by discovering the vulnerability on their own, but by reading a now-deleted Medium post from an anonymous fellow hacker. The takeaway is that Slickwraps may have had comically bad security, leaving it both wide open to breaches like this and flat-footed when it came to responding to any concerns brought to its attention.

In its blog post, Slickwraps said customer...

Music Fingers is the newest weird beat-making gadget

Image: Music Fingers

The trend of gadgets that rethink the physical ways we make music is continuing with a little wearable device called Music Fingers. It literally puts music at your fingertips, and lets you tap out beats on any surface.

It’s a clip-like device that’s goes on your finger, and sort of looks like any pulse reader you’d see in a hospital. The clip then connects to the Music Fingers app on your smartphone via Bluetooth, where sounds or loops can be assigned to the clip’s two buttons. Once that’s done, start playing by tapping away.

It’s just one example of a weirdo gadget for making beats — and there have been a lot of attempts at making these kinds of gadgets. There’s Oddball, which is an actual bouncy ball that’s also a drum machine....

Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey Being Cut Down To PG Rating For Japan Release

No longer is WB’s Suicide Squad spinoff titled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). And thank gosh for that.

Hoping to make things easier in regards to search engine optimization, the Powers That Be over at Warner Bros. made the smart decision to introduce a new, truncated title – Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, to be specific – so that potential ticket buyers could “find it more quickly.”

Or so says Birds of Prey producer (and former WB exec) Sue Kroll, who recently explained that the surprise rebranding is “simply a display change for exhibition [purposes].” Word is they suggested Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey in hopes of improving SEO and getting the movie in front of as many audience members as possible. But that’s not the only change being made in hopes of moving more tickets.

As evidenced by the Tweet below, the Japanese release of the film will come with a PG-12 rating in that region, which is apparently equivalent to an American PG and presumably means that a lot of the strong language will be removed and some of the more violent action scenes could be trimmed down, too.

It’s not out in that region until next month, so we can only speculate for now in regards to how it’ll be edited, but you can check out the trailer which confirms the new rating below:

Whether this will work or not – and more important, whether it’ll harm the overall quality of the movie or not – remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting move nonetheless. If you ask us, it probably won’t do very much, but at this point, the studio is no doubt hoping to squeeze as much money out of the rest of Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey‘s theatrical run as possible.

In any case, even if this fails, WB can at least expect significantly better numbers from the next DCEU release, as Wonder Woman 1984 reaches cinemas on June 5th and will definitely be more on the PG-13 side.

Watch: Wade Wilson And Wolverine Join Forces In Deadpool 3 Fan Trailer

The current status of Deadpool 3 is up in the air. We know that the project’s in development, but that’s about it. While we wait to learn more about it, though, one fan has now decided to put together a trailer for a third movie in the series, and it features the return of Wolverine.

When the House of Mouse took over the rights to Deadpool, fans everywhere thought that the days of the extremely violent, foul-mouthed antihero were numbered and never again would audiences enjoy Ryan Reynolds breaking the fourth wall for a gut-busting reference. At least, not in R-rated territory. Disney is notoriously known for being family-friendly, after all, and the DP movies are probably a bit too raunchy for an MCU slot.

Indeed, the R-rating is reportedly in question now and while we wait to see which way things will go, YouTube channel MacamTV has taken matters into their own hands and put together a fun little fan-made trailer for the movie. In it, Deadpool’s looking to take on Cable and the Punisher, but he won’t be doing so alone. Instead of recruiting Colossus or Negasonic Teenage Warhead for this ordeal though, Wade decides to do something fans have wanted to see for a very long time and teams up with the one and only Wolverine.

Of course, just because Wade hasn’t been on the big screen lately doesn’t mean he hasn’t been busy. He’s recently taken his talents to the world of video games. Yes, Deadpool’s appearance in Fortnite Chapter 2 has caused quite the stir and the Marvel character has become a big hit with gamers.

But circling back to his big screen adventures, and there’ve been reports that the Merc is a lock for a Phase 4 MCU debut, possibly in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Whatever the future holds for Deadpool though, if the next film he’s in is anything like this fan-tailored creation, it’s sure to be another big hit for Marvel and the property as a whole.
