Why Bluetooth apps are bad at discovering new cases of COVID-19

Illustration by Grayson Blackmon and Alex Castro / The Verge

Yesterday, we talked about the things that need to happen before we can begin to slowly re-open our cities: hospital bed supply catches up fully with demand; testing catches up fully with demand; we develop programs for quarantining new cases and informing their contacts that they may have been exposed to the disease; and the number of cases declines for 14 consecutive days.

Today let’s zoom in (not Zoom in) on the third point: building systems to enforce quarantine and to trace the contacts of those who get infected. Both are areas where public health officials believe that technology can play a role. But I want to describe why that role might be more limited than you assume — and, according to the experts I’ve spoken with, much less...

Amazon building COVID-19 test lab for workers

Image: Amazon

Amazon is building a lab to test its workers for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. It’s the latest effort by the company to protect workers who are growing increasingly panicked as the virus spreads through Amazon warehouses.

More than 50 Amazon-owned facilities have confirmed cases in the US, according to data compiled by the Financial Times, several with multiple instances of the virus.

In a blog post announcing the effort, Amazon says that a shortage of testing capacity is making it difficult to keep people safe and to get the economy back up and running. “Those who test positive could be quarantined and cared for, and everyone who tests negative could re-enter the economy with confidence,” the company said....

First Thor: Love And Thunder Concept Art Reveals New Asgard And Female Miek

Thor: Love and Thunder is quickly becoming one of the most-talked-about MCU projects in the pipeline, and for good reason, too.

Not only will it see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster become the Mighty Thor, but after the smashing success of Ragnarok, fans are beyond excited to see how writer-director Taika Waititi continues the God of Thunder’s story and where he takes the hero next. Especially since according to Waititi himself, Love and Thunder is set to be much bigger in scope than what came before. Color us intrigued.

And while it’ll surely be a while yet before we get to lay eyes on any official footage, stills or even set photos, Taika has now given us something to whet our appetite with. Earlier tonight, the beloved filmmaker shared the first few pieces of concept art from the highly anticipated sequel, showing off New Asgard, a female Miek (yes, you read that right) and more.

See for yourself in the gallery down below:

Sure, it might not be the most exciting glimpse at the movie, but it is something and with Love and Thunder still so far out, it’s all we can really expect to see at this stage. Besides, with the current drought of MCU content we’re facing, we’ll take it. And with any luck, Waititi will have more to share in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman and, of course, Christian Bale, Thor: Love and Thunder will be with us a bit later than expected now after suffering a delay. Granted nothing else gets shifted around due to the current pandemic though, it’ll hit theaters on February 18th, 2022. And frankly, we can hardly wait.

Birds Of Prey VOD Price Drops Drastically, Now Available For Super-Cheap

In these strange times, the movie industry’s having to adapt so that folks can still get their cinematic fix. Given that theaters are closed across the globe, many films are either being switched to VOD releases or are dropping online much sooner than expected. One of the latter is Birds of Preywhich Warner Bros. made available to rent last month, despite it only debuting on the big screen at the beginning of February. The move, backed by director Cathy Yan, was a successful one. And it seems the studio has now decided to open up the film to even more people.

As pointed out by IndieWire, Birds of Prey has had its price dropped on iTunes, Amazon and VUDU to a mere $5.99. That’s a sharp decrease from its original $19.99 price tag. This comes just over two months to the day when it first debuted in cinemas. Presumably, the thinking behind the decision was to make BoP stand out amongst the flood of other new/recent films on VOD. If that’s the case, it’s definitely working. The Margot Robbie vehicle is currently sitting at #1 on the iTunes movie chart.

Birds of Prey was initially discussed as something of a flop, given that it kicked off to the lowest opening weekend of any DCEU movie. However, reviews were positive and a quick search on social media will show you how popular it is with fans. Clearly, releasing it early on VOD was a good call, as it’s already being re-evaluated and talked about in a more positive light. Whether this will help the chances of it getting a sequel or not, though, we’ll just have to sit tight and see.

Yan has revealed that she’s got some ideas for a follow-up of some kind, with her wish to have it focus on a Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy relationship. Maybe dropping the price on VOD is part of WB trying to gauge just how much interest there is out there in Birds of Prey and whether it’s worth pursuing the franchise any further? If that’s case, you might want to show it your support by grabbing the movie while it’s so cheap.

Horror Fans Are Shocked By The Cannibal Holocaust Video Game

There’s a long and noble tradition of adapting movies into video games. Over the years, we’ve seen everything from The Godfather to Napoleon Dynamite to Back to the Future adapted into the medium, but it’s safe to say nobody predicted that Cannibal Holocaust would join them.

Ruggero Deodato’s notoriously gory and violent 1980 film pioneered the found footage format and seemed so realistic that the director was put on trial for the murder of his cast (the charges were dropped when the actors confirmed they weren’t dead). Yesterday, Deodato and Fantastico Studios announced that the ‘cannibal cycle’ would continue in Cannibal, due to hit all major consoles (even the Switch!) and PC in November 2020. And here’s how the announcement went down:

Cannibal

I’m going to be keeping an eye on this simply because I don’t think there’s any way it can turn out boring. Cannibal Holocaust isn’t exactly the kind of movie crying out to be adapted into a video game, but if they put some of the genuinely screwed up and shocking stuff that’s in the film in there, then the Mortal Kombat fighters are going to look like Disney princesses in comparison.

My bet is given that this is releasing on the Switch, it’ll be a Telltale-like interactive story rather than some kind of shooter. But perhaps they could squeeze some interesting mechanics in if the player character was given a virtual camera to make their own found footage. It’s the kind of tactic used in the classic Fatal Frame horror series and more recently in Bloober Team’s underrated Blair Witch game.

Whatever the case, Deodato and Fantastico have got everyone’s attention. Now they jus have to live up to the hype.

Watch: Black Widow’s Alternate Death Scene In Avengers: Endgame Leaks Online

Understandably, given the enormous importance of the Infinity Saga book-ender, Avengers: Endgame changed a heck of a lot before it hit cinemas last April. The filmmakers have come clean about many of the alterations that were made in reshoots over the past year and one of the most notable was the alternate death scene for Black Widow. Natasha Romanoff’s demise was a huge turning point for the movie, but it originally happened much differently. And you can now get a look at how things could’ve played out via the video below.

The Infinity Saga boxset that was released late last year revealed many must-see deleted scenes from across the MCU, this one included. The @MCUPerfectClips Twitter account has now just shared the sequence on social media, opening it up to many who haven’t watched it before and if that’s you, it’s time to fix that right now. Quickly, too, before it gets pulled down.

As you’ll remember, the scene in the theatrical cut focuses on the selfless battle between Clint Barton and Natasha as they fight to be the one who sacrifices themselves for the greater good, allowing the other to take home the Soul Stone to undo the Snap. In this alternate version, the stakes were upped by Thanos sending his goons to stop them from retrieving the gem. Instead of battling Clint, then, the drama of this scene comes from Nat struggling to make it to the cliff-face as she’s pelted with enemy fire.

This version is pretty emotional, too, but fans are generally in agreement that the one in the movie is the superior scene. We don’t lose anything from the villains being cut out, either, as the added intimacy only aids the poignancy of the moment. Having Thanos and his Sakaaran soldiers show up just gets in the way of the tragedy of it. That said, it’s fascinating to get the chance to watch both and compare them.

Despite her character’s death in Avengers: Endgame, Scarlett Johansson will return to the MCU in the upcoming prequel film Black Widow this November.
