(ENG v SL).For an actress who’s achieved global fame as Rey in the Star Wars sequels, Daisy Ridley probably has her pick of roles. It was a surprise, then, to see the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker actress appear in a trailer for ultra low-budget British horror flick Scrawl.
The preview has Ridley appearing as a character seemingly brought to life from a violent comic book created by a pair of teenagers. Although not boasting slick visuals, Scrawl does appear to go heavy on the gore. Still, the presence of Ridley in the trailer has confused many Star Wars fans, who variously call it a “bad student movie” whilst wondering “WTF happened?!'” for her to take the role. Was it a favour to a friend? A bet gone wrong? Or was it actually the career change Ridley was gunning for all along?
As it turns out, the reality is less exciting: Ridley acted in Scrawl before landing the role of Rey, and it’s just taken this long to reach US audiences via DVD/Blu-ray and online distribution by WildEye.
The timing of the release is no doubt intended to exploit Ridley’s star power. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that canny distributors have used this tactic, either, from Jennifer Aniston in the original Leprechaun to Leonardo DiCaprio in Critters 3. Ridley’s effort is unlikely to be as cringeworthy as John Boyega’s early stint as a stock photo model, though.
Still, it’s a good reminder of how far Daisy Ridley has come as we get closer to the December 20th release date for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We’ve recently seen some intriguing theories about the Rey/Kylo relationship, Rey’s connection to Palpatine, and even her possible clone status. All will be revealed in due course, but for now, anyone wanting to see a pre-Star Wars Ridley can check out Scrawl.
When it comes to second weekend drop-offs, almost every film sees it happen – even the mighty Avengers: Endgame. At this point, it’s just something that’s to be expected, no matter how big the movie is.
Still, in the case of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, it was particularly bad. Already, it had received a thrashing from critics, not to mention fans also came down hard on it all over social media, leading to the film scoring the lowest box office opening ever in the franchise. And as for that second weekend drop-off? Well, it wasn’t pretty.
Dark Phoenix tanked hard last week and found itself with the dishonor of having the second biggest Friday drop in superhero movie history. It should come as no surprise then that theaters are beginning to turn their back on the pic, with Exhibitor Relations reporting the following over on Twitter.
Fire extinguished. X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX will lose 1,667 theaters (-44%) in just its 3rd week of release.
Ouch! Clearly, this is going to seriously hurt the film’s box office numbers and means that it probably won’t be around much longer, as other theaters will no doubt follow suit in the weeks to come. Where it’ll ultimately end its run, we won’t know for a while yet, but with a current worldwide gross of $208 million, it’s definitely been a rough couple of weeks for Dark Phoenix.
If nothing else, this just shows that the franchise is in desperate need of a reboot. And it’ll be getting exactly that somewhere down the line now that the mutants are back home at Marvel Studios. It may not be for another five years or so, according to Kevin Feige, but given the widespread feeling of X-Men fatigue among fans, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to rest the property for a bit. Especially after the disaster that was X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Likely representing some people’s worst nightmare, an army of Child’s Play super fans used an advance screening of the horror reboot to turn out in full costume as the evil doll. Bloody Disgusting were at the event, and shared some photos of what was, at best, a truly surreal experience for all involved.
The screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in Texas was intended by Orion Pictures as a “Chucky Only” event, which is probably for the best for anyone not in costume. Fans wore Chucky’s iconic ‘Buddi’ overalls and had their look topped off with hair and makeup, as well as the option for Chucky masks.
As the photos below from the screening show, the sight of so many versions of the serial killer-possessed doll makes for quite a sight. It’s not the first time the Alamo has used this tactic, though. Most notably (and horrifyingly), they did the same thing recently through an all-clown screening of It.
We have to give credit to the marketing team behind Child’s Play though, who’ve overcome negative publicity about the movie being disowned by series creator Don Mancini to run some real creative advertising. Some of our favorites have been a running poster gag that sees Chucky lay waste to the Toy Story gang, while Mark Hamill has had fun with his casting as the voice of the doll in the movie, too.
The new Child’s Play provides an alternative take on the franchise as a mother (Aubrey Plaza) gives a technologically advanced Buddi doll to her young son Andy (Gabriel Bateman). Cue mayhem and a now-familiar plot-line of Andy trying to convince those around him that the doll is possessed by the spirit of a serial killer. As in the original killer doll movies though, these warnings are usually too little, too late.
