Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Director Teases Wonderful Things For Sequel

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a surprise hit when it landed in theaters in 2019, with the PG-13 horror pic taking in over $100 million on a budget that was just under $30 million. It’s not crazy money or anything, but the profit margin was strong enough to make a sequel inevitable and as you’ve surely heard, we’ll soon be getting one.

Not much is known about the project just yet, but both Guillermo del Toro and André Øvredal will be back for the second outing, with the former writing the screen story, and the latter calling the shots from behind the camera again. And according to the director, some wonderful things are in store for us.

While speaking with ComicBook.com, here’s what he shared:

“I mean, we’re actively working on it. We’re really playing with some new, wonderful stuff [and] I am very excited about where this sequel could go.”

Of course, that’s pretty vague and doesn’t give us much to go on, but at least he seems enthusiastic about whatever it is that they’re cooking up. It’s just frustrating that Øvredal refuses to spill anything of substance.

Unfortunately, plot details are non-existent at this early, early stage, but we imagine the sequel will follow Stella (the protagonist of the last flick) as she attempts to discover more about the eponymous book that was written by the deceased outcast Sarah Bellows. She’ll also likely try and find and rescue her friends who were taken in the original.

With any luck, Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark 2 will build on what made the first one so enjoyable and expand and flesh out the building blocks that were laid last year. It wasn’t a perfect film, but the 2019 horror pic was certainly a fun ride and left a lot of things for a sequel to pick up on and run with. And hopefully, Øvredal and del Toro are planning to do just that.

Sean Connery Would’ve Come Out Of Retirement For Another Indiana Jones

Sean Connery was only twelve years older than Harrison Ford, but the chemistry between the two of them was so natural that you really believed in their father/son dynamic throughout Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Of course, as a legitimate cinematic icon, it was tough to imagine too many people being able to convincingly put the beloved hero in his place with a paternal glare or withering putdown, but Connery proved to be the perfect person for the role and delivered a terrific performance in the film, playing a retired professor who finds himself caught up in his son’s dangerous, globetrotting adventure.

Indeed, when people think of Sean Connery, James Bond is probably the first thing that comes into their head. But Indiana Jones certainly isn’t far behind and the late actor’s work in The Last Crusade is remembered fondly by millions, with his and Ford’s chemistry on screen a highlight of the entire franchise.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

It seems the actor was happy with the memories he had of filming the blockbuster as well, as he noted in a blog post before his death that while he was enjoying his time away from the industry, he would’ve got back in front of the camera for another Indiana Jones movie.

“If anything could have pulled me out of retirement, it would have been an Indiana Jones film,” the Scottish star said in statement posted on his website.

Of course, aside from just 007 and Indy’s father, the actor has a whole bunch of memorable credits to his name, even winning an Oscar for 1987’s The Untouchables. He may have retired from live-action appearances after being soured on filmmaking thanks to a bad experience with 2003’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but it seems that another flick starring Ford’s world famous hero could’ve coaxed him back.

Tell us, though, would you have liked to see Sean Connery return to make another Indiana Jones movie? Sound off in the usual place down below.

How Jamie Lee Curtis Was Convinced To Return For 2018’s Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis had been away from the Halloween franchise for a couple of decades when she returned to the role of Laurie Strode for 2018’s rebootquel from Blumhouse. Fans thought they’d seen the last of the original Scream Queen in the horror genre, but thankfully, a close friend was able to convince the actress to face off against Michael Myers once again. And that close friend was none other than Jake Gyllenhaal.

Recently, Curtis chatted with fellow horror icon Scream star Neve Campbell for Variety’s Actors on Actors interview series. Campbell has herself just signed on to return in Scream 5, so she explained to Curtis how she was convinced to board the project. This led the Halloween star to open up about how she got involved with 2018 film, revealing that Gyllenhaal vouched for director David Gordon Green before he sent her the script.

“My phone rang, I was on vacation with my husband in the mountains, and my phone rang and it was my friend/godson/knucklehead Jake Gyllenhaal saying “hey, my friend David Gordon Green would like to talk to you about a Halloween movie.” And I was like… [shocked expression] [That was] the last thing in the world I ever thought I would do again, the last thing in my mind. And I said “Sure!”

Curtis went on to describe how Green then started to pitch her his idea for the relaunch of the legendary series on the phone, but she invited him to just go ahead and send her the screenplay. Upon reading it, the actress was struck by its homage to the original 1978 film as well as its unique angle on the material, particularly its exploration of the multi-generational trauma of the Strode family. And after that, she was back on board.

Fast forward a few years later and Curtis has already shot the sequel, Halloween Kills, which should have been with us last month but has been pushed back to next October instead. After that, Halloween Ends will then conclude the Laurie/Michael saga for good (though the Halloween franchise will no doubt go on). But we all have Jake Gyllenhaal to thank for getting Curtis to answer the phone when Green called in the first place.

DJI’s palm-sized Mini 2 drone flies further and shoots 4K for $449

Last year’s DJI Mavic Mini might have been the smallest and lightest full-featured drone on the market, but it was also a little compromised out of the gate. Today, the DJI Mini 2 — don’t call it a Mavic — is addressing some of its limitations.

While the new $449 drone might look identical to the original, even weighing the same 249 grams (which means you don’t need to register it with the FAA), it now comes with DJI’s OcuSync 2 wireless connectivity for up to 2.5 times the wireless range and more stable connectivity. The original was unusual among DJI’s drones for relying on relatively shaky Wi-Fi, which was definitely a dealbreaker for me.

It uses the same controller as the new Mavic Air 2, though of course you won’t get that drone’s...

YouTube says video claiming Trump won does not violate its election misinformation policies

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

YouTube says a video claiming President Donald Trump won the election does not violate any of its policies and has allowed it to stay on the platform, despite the election not being called by major news outlets for either candidate yet. The decision stands in contrast to Twitter and Facebook’s more aggressive attempts to clamp down on misleading claims and misinformation over election results.

The video, titled “Trump Won. MSM hopes you don’t believe your eyes,” was published by pro-Trump network One American News Network (OANN) on Wednesday. YouTube says the video violates its advertising guidelines but not its content policies, so it can stay online but will run without ads, the company confirmed to The Verge. The story was first...
