General Motors is partnering with Ventec Life Systems to help increase production of ventilators that are needed in hospitals dealing with patients who have the novel coronavirus, the companies announced Friday. In the most severe cases of COVID-19 infection, patients need the assistance of ventilators to breathe, and there are widespread concerns that the US does not have enough ventilators to meet the coming demand.

Seattle-based Ventec is one of a handful of ventilator manufacturers in the US, according to NBC News, and already has ramped up its production. Ventec CEO Chris Kiple says the company is aiming to produce 1,000 machines per month (up from its usual 150 per month), in the next 90 days, and eventually, to produce 2,000...

Google’s coronavirus website finally launches alongside enhanced search results

Google’s Covid-19 information website, at google.com/covid19

One week ago, President Donald Trump held a press conference wherein he claimed Google would be building a screening website for the coronavirus that would direct people to testing sites. As we learned in the following days, that wasn’t true. Google’s sister company Verily did launch such a site, but only for the Bay Area and reportedly it only offered tests to a very small number of people. Google, however, did say it would launch some sort of website and after a small delay, it’s here.

Alongside the website and potentially more importantly, Google will start providing more enhanced information cards for people who search for terms related to the coronavirus. There will be information tabs for symptoms, prevention, global statics, and...

Tom Hanks’ Sister Says He’s Not Doing Great With Coronavirus But Still Ok

Though the internet was pretty scared there for a while – and understandably so – everyone was able to breathe a sigh of relief a few days ago when we learned that Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson had left the Australian hospital where they were being treated for Coronavirus and have now begun to self-isolate at their home.

Throughout it all, they’ve kept their spirits high, too, updating us with a number of photos and videos to ensure fans that everything was alright and they were doing just fine. But while the worst may be behind them, it seems they’re not entirely in the clear just yet. Or at least, Tom isn’t.

His sister, Sandra Hanks Benoiton, recently spoke to the Daily Mail and gave them an update on her brother, telling them the following when they asked how he was doing:

“I have communicated with my brother. He’s not great, but still okay,” she says. “[Am I] shocked? No. He’s an actor, not a god [but] medical care in Australia is good.”

So, not the most promising update then, but at least he’s “still okay.” And given that the actor is 63 now, it’s to be expected that Hanks might have a harder time fighting off the virus as it does tend to impact older people a lot worse than it does those who are under the age of 60.

But Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson aren’t the only celebrities currently fighting the Coronavirus, as we also know that Game of Thrones‘ Kristofer Hivju, Quantum of Solace star Olga Kurylenko and even Idris Elba have all been infected. As have several other famous names, with more and more being added to the list on a daily basis.

Indeed, the World Health Organization has now declared COVID-19 a pandemic, with lawmakers urging everyone to practice social distancing. In fact, most cities are on total or semi-lockdown right now, with all but only the most essential businesses remaining open. With no end in sight and the worst still yet to come, apparently, it might be a good time to binge watch some Tom Hanks movies and remind ourselves why he’s without a doubt one of this generation’s best actors.

US senators demand Amazon answer questions about warehouse worker safety

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

A group of four US senators, including Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, have sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos asking him to respond to questions about how the company is keeping its warehouse workers safe amid the ongoing spread of the novel coronavirus. The senators sent the letter two days after the first US-based Amazon warehouse worker tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

The group of senators is led by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and includes Sanders and Sherrod Brown (D-OH). “Any failure of Amazon to keep its workers safe does not just put their employees at risk, it puts the entire country at risk,” the group said in the letter. The senators are also asking...

Chris Hemsworth Now Reportedly Eyed For Another DCEU Role

So many cinematic universes try to recreate the MCU formula instead of putting their own unique spin on things and almost always, they fail at the first hurdle. The Dark Universe flopped pretty spectacularly and the early years of the DCEU were also pretty rough, with the franchise taking a long time to find its footing. But found its footing it has.

Indeed, there’s been a big uptick in quality ever since the Zack Snyder era. And now, with the momentum going strong and folks excited about DC’s shared universe again, it seems the studio is keen on roping in some big guns. Particularly, the MCU’s Holy Trinity of Chrises.

We told you earlier this week that DC wants Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt and Chris Evans on their side and when it comes to Hemsworth in particular, this is actually the second time his name has popped up in relation to the DCEU. If you’ll recall, we originally heard he was being eyed for the Alan Scott version of Green Lantern, but it seems things have now changed.

According to our sources – the same ones who told us that the Transformers franchise is being rebooted and that both the Mask and Pennywise have cameos in Space Jam 2, both of which are now confirmed – Hemsworth is being considered for Ted Kord, the second incarnation of the Blue Beetle. Is he the only name being looked at? Unlikely, but considering this is now the second role they’ve eyed the MCU star for, it’s pretty clear that they want him.

And why wouldn’t they? Chris Hemsworth is a hugely popular actor and lifts almost every project he’s in. Whether he’d want to join the DCEU or if he’d even have time to remains to be seen, of course, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised if at least one of the MCU’s Chrises end up playing for the other team at some point in their career.

Christian Bale’s Thor: Love And Thunder Role Reportedly Revealed In New Leak

Holy casting news, Batman! Christian Bale is getting ready to return to the world of comic book movies and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

The former Dark Knight recently joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder, which will see Marvel Studios welcome Taika Waititi back behind the camera for another space-faring adventure centered on the God of Thunder. But it won’t only be Chris Hemsworth’s version of the hero we see, as come 2021, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will also prove herself worthy as the MCU’s new Thor.

Circling back to Bale though, and his role still remains a mystery, with Marvel refusing to reveal who he’s playing (though we do know it’s a villain). But a new leak that’s surfaced from 4chan – so, you know, take it with a pinch of salt – may just have the answer for us. And it points to the beloved actor stepping into the part of Dario Agger, who’s also known as the Minotaur in the comics and is the head of the Roxxon Corporation.

Of course, Bale has been linked to Agger before and we can definitely see him taking on the role, but with no official confirmation just yet, we’ll hold of on getting too excited. What we can tell you with certainty, however, is that Waititi is likely to lean into the same whimsical and humorous tone we saw in Ragnarok, which can only be a good thing.

Indeed, Thor’s third solo adventure was one of the MCU’s best efforts to date, and if Thor: Love and Thunder turns out to be even half as a good as it, then we’re in for a real treat. Especially since we have Bale in a villainous role.

Microsoft’s Xbox Live service is down again for the second time this week. Issues first began popping up some time after 7PM ET on Friday, with Down Detector indicating sharp spikes in user-reported connection problems and Microsoft later confirming Twitter that it’s “experiencing issues” with matchmaking, Party Chat, and Looking for Groups.”

On Sunday, Xbox Live experienced a similar outage that lasted more than two hours. That was slightly more serious, with users reporting issues signing into Xbox One devices. This time around, Microsoft’s Xbox Live Status page doesn’t seem to be indicating any problems yet, although the company is acknowledging that it’s working on a fix.
