Why Facebook banned Alex Jones — and Twitter didn’t
On one hand, we spent maybe too much time this week on the question of whether one person should lose access to his social media accounts. On the other hand, it’s a question that illuminates some of the central tensions that led me to start this newsletter. How can social media be used to do harm? Can tech companies effectively rein in their worst users? Also, what the hell is Twitter’s deal?
Will Oremus tries to answer the latter question with some reporting on what people inside Twitter are saying about Alex Jones. He offers a handful of theories on the company’s paralyzed, contradictory stances on Infowars. First, there’s Twitter’s bias toward inaction on almost all things; second, there’s its terror of being called partisan by...

Many Android devices ship with firmware vulnerabilities, researchers find
Asus, Essential, LG, and ZTE have all vowed to patch security flaws found by mobile security firm Kryptowire, according to Wired. The firm’s research was meant to point out that some security meltdowns stem from code written by phone companies to modify Android.
Researchers found bugs in the firmware of 10 separate devices carried across the major American carriers, according Wired, which saw an early version of Kryptowire’s report. The security lapses could lead to everything from letting an attacker lock someone out of their device, to getting control over their microphone and more — though most of the attacks that the researchers detailed required users to download some sort of malicious app before they could take advantage of the...

Spotify might let free users skip all ads
Spotify is testing a new feature in Australia that’ll let non-paying users skip ads (both audio and video) as many times as they like. The company tells AdAge that the idea is that users will likely only skip ads they don’t care about, so what they do consume will give Spotify feedback on how to better target them. A company executive compared it to Discover Weekly, but for ads. Advertisers won’t have to pay for skipped ads.
I sort of understand this, but I don’t know how much better it will make ads. People are lazy and don’t want to have to navigate back to the app just to skip an ad. Spotify says it’s only testing the feature for now, but the goal is to launch it globally. As someone who pays for Spotify, this makes me feel a little...

Elon Musk is still seeking funding to take Tesla private, says report
This week, Elon Musk shocked markets with an unexpected plan to take Tesla private, removing all shares from public markets at an estimated cost of at least $50 billion. But while Musk claimed that funding for the move had already been secured, unnamed sources in a recent Bloomberg report say Tesla is still working to line up financial support from a variety of different sources.
According to the report, Tesla is currently seeking funding from a broad pool of investors, in part to avoid a concentration of ownership. Discussions are still in the early stages, and include fundamental questions about how the deal and resulting holdings will be structured. Additionally, Bloomberg spoke to individuals close to 16 financial and tech...

Google Play warns users it doesn’t carry Fortnite Battle Royale
Google is warning Android users that it doesn’t carry Fortnite Battle Royale in the Play Store. If you search for Fortnite in the Play Store, it will return a notice from Google. “Fortnite Battle Royal by Epic Games, Inc is not available on Google Play,” the sign says, likely as a clarification to users, as first spotted by 9to5Google.
By saying upfront that the Play Store doesn’t have Fortnite, Google is attempting to protect unknowing users who might download some malicious clone of the app.
Epic Games requires users who want to run Fortnite on Android to download an APK of the beta directly from its site. The decision essentially cuts Google out of potential revenue from app purchases, which would have been a 30 percent cut.

Watch a spacecraft get blasted to the Sun tomorrow morning
Early Saturday morning, the United Launch Alliance will send up its most powerful rocket, the Delta IV Heavy, along with a spacecraft bound for the Sun. On top of the rocket is NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, embarking on the first ever mission into the Sun’s atmosphere, known as the corona. Thanks to a big lift from the Delta IV, the Parker Solar Probe will get closer to the Sun than any human-made vehicle has been before — a mere 4 million miles away.
Getting to the Sun is actually super difficult. That’s because the Earth is moving sideways relative to the Sun at about 67,000 miles per hour, according to NASA. In order to journey to the center of the Solar System, the Parker Solar Probe will basically have to cancel out that speed by...

The best instant camera for the beach
Sometimes you need a break from toxic social media that’s filled with constant comparisons to how your friends are eating better, dressing better, and traveling to more exotic places than you. Well, there’s plenty of appeal in instant cameras. They have physicality since you can hold your mementos in your hand, and they’re a fun, unpredictable throwback to the analog days when you had to manually adjust the settings of a camera to get the best shot.
You’ve probably seen someone carrying around the Fujifilm Instax Mini, but there are a ton of other recent options out there as well, like the Kodak Printomatic, Lomography’s Lomo’Instant Square, and Fujifilm’s Instax Square SQ6. Some of them are analog, some of them are partly digital, but...

The Galaxy Home looks like everything but a speaker
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Home yesterday, a Bixby-enabled speaker, which garnered public attention not for its arrival, but for its bewildering design. The device is supposed to be Samsung’s entry into the high-end smart speaker market, meant to take on the Apple HomePod. And while there’s still a lot we don’t yet know, such as price and availability, one thing’s for sure: it doesn’t look like a speaker.
Some might say it looks like the Google Home’s cousin that got held back a few years in school. You might also say it’s evil-looking. Why is it so dark? Why does it have three legs? Is it to possibly protect Samsung against the debacle with Apple’s HomePod launch, where speakers were reportedly staining wooden tables with white rings?

Nerds, rejoice: Jeopardy! is finally bingeable on Hulu
If you’re a trivia weirdo, or just an insufferable know-it-all like me, at some point over the last few years you have wondered why past seasons of Jeopardy! are not available to binge. The show has aired every weeknight for decades, the current iteration having made its original debut in 1984; just think of how much trivia that is! Ostensibly that answer has had something to do with keeping the game interesting: if your contestants have had access to literally every category and answer you’ve ever come up with, their preparation suddenly has a definitive pattern (as opposed to just reading a bunch of stuff and hoping for the best, the way Didi Pickles did it). They’re less likely to fall flat on their faces, or give us those long,...

Get your first look at Doom Eternal in new trailer
Hell is back, and it looks as intense as ever. At Quakecon today, Bethesda revealed the first proper look at Doom Eternal, the sequel to 2016’s excellent reboot of the iconic shooter series, with a series of lengthy videos. Eternal was initially revealed at E3 back in June with a teaser trailer, but this is the first time the developer is showing off gameplay. You can watch the keynote in its entirety above, though the Doom section starts about an hour and 11 minutes into the presentation.
As promised during the original announcement, Eternal introduces hell on Earth, with a new setting that brings the demon hordes off of Mars and down to our home planet; though there are still sci-fi locations like the Martian moon Phobos. The action,...

Hilarious New Clip From Avengers: Infinity War’s Gag Reel Debuts
Surely by now, you’ve picked up your digital copy of the year’s biggest film, Avengers: Infinity War, and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? The home video release of the Joe and Anthony Russo-helmed blockbuster is chock-full of bonus content, not the least of which is an audio commentary done by the directing twosome, alongside the dynamic writing duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Nonetheless, we all know the reason you clicked on this article.
Late last month, and just prior to the digital release of Infinity War, a snippet from the film’s gag reel surfaced online, bringing with it some hilarious footage of the King of Wakanda being interrupted by a goat, Paul Bettany dropping an F-bomb and a slew of the titular supergroup busting out their best dance moves.
Now, on the verge of Avengers: Infinity War completing the intergalactic journey to home video on August 14th, another excerpt from the blockbuster’s blooper reel has made it onto the interweb for your viewing pleasure, and it’s just as humorous, if not more so than the fragment we received last month.
The roughly forty-second clip, while not particularly vocal, is highlighted by an intense sequence featuring Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo and Benedict Wong, in which the latter, rather amusingly, can’t help but break the fourth wall. Additionally, you’ll see Scarlett Johansson make a funny quip and Chris Hemsworth stumble over and over again attempting to complete the “superhero landing.”
As stated above, Avengers: Infinity War – the fourth ever ticket booth titan to conquer the elusive $2 billion plateau – is scheduled to hit home video on August 14th, and you can expect the physical release to include a much longer blooper reel. I mean, what other reason do you need to pick up the motion picture event of the year?
