Suicide Squad Director Reacts To #ReleaseTheAyerCut Campaign

David Ayer may have recently posted a social media statement explaining that he’s no longer going to speak publicly about the behind the scenes machinations which effectively saw Suicide Squad taken out of his hands in post-production, but he’s clearly more than happy to thank the fans who continue to have his back.

Once Zack Snyder’s Justice League morphed from wishful thinking into hotly-anticipated HBO Max exclusive, there was genuine hope that the Ayer Cut would be next in line, and with good reason. Snyder’s reworked DCEU blockbuster generated mountains of buzz, and Suicide Squad was in much better shape to begin with.

Ayer admitted last year that all of the footage was already in the can, so it would have also been a whole lot cheaper to put together than the reported $70 million the studio spent on the Snyder Cut. WarnerMedia’s Ann Sarnoff may have dismissed the idea unequivocally, but the fanbase simply aren’t going to give up.

As you can see below, Ayer was humbled by the latest stage of the never-ending fan campaign, which saw #ReleaseTheAyerCut generate well in excess of 400,000 retweets.

Regardless of what gets said in public, fans are never going to give up on Ayer’s preferred cut of Suicide Squad seeing the light of day, especially when the Justice League precedent has already been set. Campaigns never tend to yield much in the way of tangible rewards, but the Warner Bros. top brass will be fully aware that they’ve got a headline-grabbing project tucked under their belts that they can unleash whenever they see fit. It’s just a case of playing the waiting game to see how things unfold from here.

Netflix’s The Chair lands on Friday and is set to be the platform’s next buzzy prestige drama, while Jason Momoa’s Sweet Girl is virtually guaranteed to top the most-watched list by the end of the weekend given that it’s a high concept action thriller with a recognizable star in the lead.

Hugh Jackman is also back with his first major leading role in a movie for three years when Reminiscence comes to theaters and HBO Max on Friday, and the trailers for the sci-fi mystery have offered some distinct Christopher Nolan vibes.

Netflix’s New Thriller Is Dominating This Weekend

One thing you can always guarantee from Netflix is that regardless of what the streaming service’s latest in-house genre film is, it’ll always spend its first weekend nestled at the upper end of the Top 10 most-watched list. It doesn’t matter whether it’s action, thriller, horror, sci-fi or anything in between, it’s a fact of life that subscribers crave something new on a Friday.

Last week is was itchy high concept French horror The Swarm, and this week the honor has fallen to Beckett. A stripped down, bare bones chase film, the likes of which we don’t see much of anymore from Hollywood’s biggest outfits, the plot is both straightforward and complicated. John David Washington’s title hero survives a tragic accident but sees something he soon realizes he wasn’t supposed to, forcing him on the run across Greece as shady forces try to take him out in an effort to prevent him from unraveling a conspiracy he can barely even comprehend.

It’s a neat and efficient little manhunt story that isn’t particularly striking or flashy, but it’s a decent enough way to spend 108 minutes of your time. Reviews have been mixed across the board, though, with Beckett holding a so-so Rotten Tomatoes score of 51%, and audiences have rated it lower at 34%.

Maybe it’s the lack of what you’d call ‘standard’ thriller elements like big shootouts, fistfights and car chases, but Beckett has still drawn in enough of an audience to rank as the third most-watched title on Netflix at the time of writing, but the lukewarm critical reactions could indicate that it might suffer a tumble down the most-watched list once the initial curiosity factor has worn off.

The Suicide Squad’s Entire Box Office Run May Be Less Than The 1st Movie Made In A Day

Due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad never had a hope in hell of coming anywhere close to the $746 million earned by David Ayer’s first installment, but with each passing day the box office prognosis for the R-rated superhero blockbuster continues to get worse and worse.

A $26 million opening weekend may have smashed all sorts of records for an R-rated wide release during the COVID-19 era, but it was still a lot less than many analysts were projecting. Unfortunately, the latest set of data paints a very somber picture for Gunn’s $185 million effort, both by current standards and in comparisons to Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

The second outing for Task Force X is predicted to suffer a massive second weekend drop after Friday-to-Friday takings plummeted by a worrying 81%, with an overall decline of 70% set to see The Suicide Squad bring in $7-8 million across its sophomore frame. However, the most galling statistic is that it might end its theatrical run with a lifetime gross that’s significantly less than the opener earned in a single day.

In the summer of 2016, Suicide Squad hauled in $64.9 million on its first Friday, before going on to destroy August records with a bow in excess of $133 million. If Gunn’s follow up continues trending downwards to the degree that it has over the last seven days, then it’ll be sitting on a shade over $42 million by the end of today.

That would make it very difficult for The Suicide Squad to show the legs necessary to earn another $20 million, especially when the film is also available to HBO Max customers as part of their monthly subscription to the platform.
