How Johnny Depp’s Cameo In A Nightmare On Elm Street 6 Came To Be
1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street famously served as the big screen debut of one Johnny Depp, but one little tidbit you might not be aware of is that the Oscar-nominated actor also returned for a brief cameo in the sixth installment of the slasher series.
You wouldn’t think that the original Elm Street movie left much room for a Glen Lantz comeback, seeing how Depp’s character met a typically gruesome end at the hands of Freddy Krueger. Still, in the realm of nightmares, anything is possible, and so the star – then fresh off the success of Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands – makes a fleeting appearance during a dream sequence in 1991’s Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.
The moment comes in the dream of Spencer Lewis, played by Breckin Meyer. As Spencer dozes off in front of the TV, a commercial comes on parodying the “This Is Your Brain on Drugs” PSAs that were airing at the time, in which Depp’s character fries an egg before getting knocked in the face with a pan by Freddy. To save the surprise, Depp was credited as “Oprah Noodlemantra,” while his character was simply listed as “Guy on TV.”

So, how did this weird little cameo come to be? Well, according to Screen Rant, it all came down to Depp’s connection to Freddy’s Dead director Rachel Talalay. To elaborate, Talalay produced the 1990 John Waters comedy Cry Baby, starring Depp, and so the filmmaker used that connection to ask for a favor.
Incidentally, while Freddy’s next movie – the 1994 meta-horror Wes Craven’s New Nightmare – featured several cast members from previous pics playing themselves, director Wes Craven chose not to invite Depp back. Apparently, the actor’s star had risen so high at that point that Craven was too intimidated to ask, though after the film’s release, Depp said that he would’ve been happy to return if he’d been given the opportunity.
Jump to the present day, and the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise isn’t doing much of anything, but so long as Freddy remains one of pop culture’s most beloved villains, we can never rule out the possibility of another reboot.

Halloween Kills Has Now Wrapped Production
It’s been a busy week for fans of the Halloween franchise, with a teaser, available above, dropped by Jamie Lee Curtis for the upcoming Halloween Kills. As well as potentially revealing how Michael Myers escaped the fire at the Strode house, the trailer also gave us our first look at Anthony Michael Hall’s portrayal of Tommy Doyle. We should hopefully expect more footage soon, too, as shooting has now officially wrapped after 36 days, setting up a post-production period leading up to Halloween Kills‘ release next October.
We’ve seen a lot of news from the Halloween camp since Blumhouse announced the two sequels to David Gordon Green’s 2018 effort back in June. Although the original plan seemed to be to shoot Kills and Halloween Ends back-to-back, that approach now appears to have been scrapped, with the latter film likely going into production sometime in 2021. The fast turnaround on Halloween Kills suggests that Green, Danny McBride and Scott Teems already had a solid idea of a follow-up film before Halloween‘s box office success last year.
From the behind-the-scenes pictures and other news from the production, we know that Kills will bring back many of the original film’s cast, and will also feature a flashback to the events of the first movie. As with Halloween II, this upcoming sequel is going to be partly set in Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, either in flashback form or as part of a present day setting. Furthermore, the glimpses we received in the teaser trailer this week suggest that Halloween Kills will follow the original sequel by directly continuing Michael Myers’ killing spree.
How this all ties into Halloween Ends is currently unknown, although Jamie Lee Curtis has been talking up how the two contemporary sequels will continue to build on John Carpenter’s original picture. At any rate, we’re looking forward to seeing how Green and McBride choose to conclude (as much as possible in this series) the Michael Myers and Laurie Strode story.
Halloween Kills will begin answering these questions when it releases on October 16th, 2020, while Halloween Ends is currently down for an October 15th, 2021 premiere.

Katee Sackhoff Expected To Return For Riddick 4: Furya
The Vin Diesel-starring Riddick 4: Furya is gathering momentum, with shooting on the latest entry in the franchise set to begin in 2020. The film will take Riddick back to his home planet of Furya, with David Twohy returning to direct after helming all three movies in the series to date. And following on from the news that Karl Urban may be showing up in the pic, our sources – the same ones who told us that an Aladdin sequel and a Green Lantern TV series are in the works, which we now know to be true – have informed us that Katee Sackhoff is also expected to join the cast for Riddick’s comeback.
Since 2000’s sleeper hit Pitch Black, the Riddick series has grown in scale and ambition, with 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick placing Vin Diesel’s antihero at the center of the action. Although not a hit on its initial release, it built an audience on DVD, and Riddick arrived in 2013 as a return to the more focused plotting of Pitch Black. By this time, Vin Diesel had assumed much of the responsibility for the franchise, fitting in development around his role in the Fast and Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Of course, Sackhoff appeared in Riddick as Dahl, a bounty hunter and sniper in the Boss Johns Mercs. The combative Dahl shared many of the traits of Sackhoff’s Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica, albeit with some controversy over a partial nude scene and suggestive sparring with Vin Diesel’s character. The role that she might play in Riddick 4: Furya is still unclear, but from what we’ve heard, she’ll very likely be involved in some form or another.
Since Riddick, Sackhoff has made appearances in movies such as Oculus and 2036 Origin Unknown, while also maintaining a long-running part in television series Longmire, cameos in Star Wars Rebels and a recurring character in The Flash. Although official news on Riddick 4: Furya has been thin on the ground as of late, we’ll be sure to bring you any updates that come through as we get them. After all, with a completed script and shooting schedule reportedly in place, it shouldn’t be long before more comes to light.
