AI R&D is booming, but general intelligence is still out of reach

Illustration by Alex Castro / Th

Trying to get a handle on the progress of artificial intelligence is a daunting task, even for those enmeshed in the AI community. But the latest edition of the AI Index report — an annual rundown of machine learning data points now in its third year — does a good job confirming what you probably already suspected: the AI world is booming in a range of metrics covering research, education, and technical achievements.

The AI Index covers a lot of ground — so much so that its creators, which include institutions like Harvard, Stanford, and OpenAI, have also released two new tools just to sift through the information they sourced from. One tool is for searching AI research papers and the other is for investigating country-level data on...

Apple is now selling Brydge’s laptop-style iPad keyboards

Photo: Sam Byford / The Verge

Apple’s online and retail stores in North America have started carrying products from Brydge, a company that’s known for producing MacBook-style Bluetooth keyboards for iPads. Models for the 10.2-inch iPad and 10.5-inch iPad Air are available.

Apple brought support for its Smart Keyboard to both of these iPad lines this year, suggesting it wants to encourage typing on lower-end iPads and not just the Pro series. Brydge does make a keyboard for the current iPad Pro (pictured above), which we tested and found to be the best laptop-style option available, but Apple doesn’t appear to be selling it right now.

If you have a 2019 iPad or iPad Air, though, these keyboards could be a good option. (The iPad Air version also works...

Hugh Jackman Hilariously Trolls Ryan Reynolds Over Free Guy

Oh, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. What are they like? Frenemies for life, it seems. They’re always back and forth with online teases and jabs at one another’s expense, often with humorous rebuttals from the offended party. Yes, they’re constantly cracking wise with each other and it seems as if Jackman has now gone one further than an accidental “leak” on Mr. Deadpool’s birthday.

In an amusing piece of photoshop trolling, the Wolverine and X-Men actor recently uploaded an image on Instagram of the poster for Reynolds’ upcoming movie Free Guy. Only, it’s not the official poster, as it contains Jackman’s face superimposed where Reynolds’ should be.

The post is complete with a snarky comment by the actor, too, saying there’s been a “small edit to make this a much better promotional tool,” implying the original was not doing its job of hyping up the film.

The poster for Free Guy was debuted by Reynolds in Brazil at CCXP earlier this month and for those who don’t know, the film follows the story of Guy, a mild-mannered bank teller who finds out he’s actually an NPC (non-playable character) in an open world video game.

Reynolds recently expressed his delight in working on the movie, relishing in the novelty of not doing a superhero or comic flick and saying:

I mean, it’s not every day that you get to make a movie [that] isn’t based on a comic book, or based on a graphic novel, or based on anything…It was just an original idea that we got to take the ball and run with, and it was a dream come true.

Alongside Reynolds, Free Guy will also star Joe Keery (Stranger Things) and Taika Waititi (The Mandalorian and Avengers: Endgame) and it’s expected to hit cinemas on July 3rd, 2020.

So far, there doesn’t seem to be any comeback from Ryan in regards to the amended poster (though he apparently did share a comment on the post, which seems to have vanished since), but we can only imagine what he’s got in store to get back at his longtime pal.

Tom Holland Almost Became A Carpenter Before Becoming Spider-Man

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how quickly famous actors could’ve veered off into completely different career paths and we’d have never heard of them. Likewise, we may struggle to imagine actors doing things outside their biggest roles. Daniel Radcliffe will always be Harry Potter (despite the franchise ending eight years ago), Ryan Reynolds will always be Deadpool and Tom Holland will always be Spider-Man.

So, when Holland spoke with Jimmy Kimmel recently, fans were surprised to learn that not only did he nearly not play Peter Parker, but he also almost never went into acting at all. We know, it’s hard to imagine such a thing. According to him, though, acting was not something his mother initially wanted him to pursue. Instead, she wanted him to be a carpenter, even sending him to a school to learn the trade despite him already getting into performing.

He told Kimmel that he thought he was doing pretty good “and mom was like ‘nope’. So I went to this school and I was there studying and I was getting a qualification to become a carpenter.” Kimmel then asked Holland whether he’d learned anything while in the course, to which he replied that he already had some skills in carpentry before enrolling.

Speaking of carpentry, there’s of course another great man who began early on as a carpenter before going on to do incredible things. His name? Harrison Ford, who ultimately went on to find himself as one of the greatest actors of his generation.

But circling back to Holland, and it’s safe to say that he certainly made the right choice in the end, with his charisma and talent in front of the camera making him one of the most enjoyable performers in the business. And with Spider-Man now staying in the MCU for a little while longer, fans can rest easy knowing that the actor has a bright future ahead of him.
