OneWeb files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

OneWeb satellite proposal Image: OneWeb

Space exploration firm OneWeb has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, GeekWire reports, leaving uncertainty about the 74 satellites it has in orbit and its plans to provide high-speed internet from space.

In a news release, OneWeb said it plans to use the bankruptcy proceedings to pursue a sale of the company. “While the company was close to obtaining financing, the process did not progress because of the financial impact and market turbulence related to the spread of COVID-19,” according to the news release, which also mentioned that the company was “forced to reduce our workforce.” It did not indicate how many people may have been laid off.

Last Saturday, OneWeb successfully launched 34 satellites on a Soyuz rocket from...

Tom Hanks And Rita Wilson Return To U.S. After Coronavirus Quarantine

One of the first indicators that the coronavirus was a very real and serious thing was when news broke that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson had tested positive for the virus. The actor was in Australia filming Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic when he and his wife began to display symptoms and were eventually diagnosed with it.

The couple eventually released a statement confirming the news and were in self isolation for two weeks. But now, they’ve officially returned safely to their home in Los Angeles after recovering from the virus. They’ll no doubt continue to practice social distancing and isolation, but for now, they’re doing fine.

While many of us don’t know Hanks personally, he’s widely regarded as perhaps the most well-liked celebrity out there and as such, it came as a pretty big shock to the internet when he revealed he’d been infected with the Coronavirus. Even in a time of crisis, though, he remained endearing and positive, sharing several updates on his Instagram that kept us up to date and assured us everything was fine.

But to see him and his wife Rita become the first well-known people to test positive for the coronavirus came as a real wake-up call for everyone to take this thing seriously. Anyone can get it. No matter your age or health. Hopefully, though, we can eventually go back to the way things and with any luck, it won’t be long before we’re driving to the local theater again to see our favorite actor, Tom Hanks, on the big screen once more.

Until then, though, stay safe and remember to follow the proper precautions to keep the virus from spreading. It’s only going to be contained if everyone does their part to fight it.

28 Weeks Later Star Says She’d Love To Do A Sequel

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has seen people develop a sudden interest in both post-apocalyptic movies and stories centered on viral outbreaks, with Steven Soberbergh’s Contagion seeing a huge upturn in viewers despite being released a decade ago, while the predictably inevitable horror cash-in Corona Zombies is set to hit home video in a couple of weeks.

One of the most popular movies in recent years that managed to combine both the viral and zombie aspects was Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, which scored solid reviews and went on to earn over $80 million globally back in 2002 on a minuscule budget. Sequel 28 Weeks Later didn’t fare quite as well at the box office, but both films found enough fans that talk of a third installment has never really disappeared over the last decade, especially with the follow-up ending on a cliffhanger.

Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later

There’s been a couple of time where the project seemed like it may finally come to fruition, only for things to quickly go up in smoke, but 28 Weeks Later star Imogen Poots has now admitted that she’d love to be a part of 28 Months Later if the threequel ever manages to escape from development hell and make the zombie-like sprint towards the big screen.

“Oh, it’s such an interesting idea to think about. It’s weird… But yeah, absolutely. I mean, the team behind that… I want that director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to do some more work. He’s so exceptional. But yeah, I love that film.”

Part of the reason that both Days and Weeks worked so well is that they told human stories against the backdrop of the pending zombie apocalypse, where a lot of other similar movies tend to focus more heavily on either the action or the gore. Thirteen years have now passed since 28 Weeks Later, but there’ve been reports that another film could still be on the way and for now, we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Google has banned the Infowars Android app from the Google Play store, the company confirmed to Wired on Friday. Google also confirmed the app’s removal to The Verge, and we couldn’t find the Infowars app in a search on the Play Store this evening.

The app was apparently removed because of a video posted by radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones that, according to Wired, “disputed the need for social distancing, shelter in place, and quarantine efforts meant to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.” Before it was removed, the app had more than 100,000 downloads, Wired reports.

Lyft is referring drivers to jobs at Amazon after massive ridership decline

Lyft is now referring drivers on its platform to jobs at Amazon in a partnership between the two companies designed to alleviate financial hardships from a massive drop in ride-hailing usage.

Lyft notified drivers of the program on Friday via email, which the company has shared with The Verge, and said it’s encouraging them to apply to roles in Amazon warehouses and as part of the e-commerce company’s grocery and package deliveries platforms. Unlike Uber, which operates a food delivery platform, Lyft does not currently delivery meals or groceries, and its ridership has plummeted in recent weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yet the company announced last week it would be expanding its delivery network to start delivering test kits,...
