Netflix’s Black Lives Matter Section Has Some Great Movies/Shows
“When we say ‘Black Lives Matter,’ we also mean ‘Black storytelling matters.'” This was the opening sentence of a post through which Netflix expressed their sympathies for the civil rights protests that have swept through the country following the death of George Floyd, an African American victim of racially-motivated police brutality.
Although the bulk of the battle of racism has to be fought in the streets of cities, courts of law and halls of government, Netflix also has an important part to play in this struggle. As a platform for entertainment, it can not only enable creators from compromised backgrounds to tell their stories, but – in doing so – also enable its subscribers to see the world through another person’s eyes, an experience which has proven to foster understanding and solidarity.
To that end, the streamer has been busy bringing us a tremendous amount of content by, for and/or about African Americans and they’re all featured in their new Black Lives Matter section. Among these are the documentaries Who Killed Malcolm X, which came out earlier this year, and What Happened, Miss Simone?, a movie that was initially released in 2015. The former investigates the assassination of one of modern history’s most accomplished activists. The latter explores the politically active life of singer Nina Simone, and both are as educative as they are excellent.
When you log onto Netflix today, you will see a carefully curated list of titles that only begin to tell the complex and layered stories about racial injustice and Blackness in America. https://t.co/dN6XQmsrGK pic.twitter.com/3CIrrno6mw
— Netflix (@netflix) June 10, 2020
The streamer also offers content that shows African American life as it is today rather than what it was several decades ago – even if the two time periods appear increasingly similar. Take, for instance, the Netflix original Dear White People. Based on a 2014 film of the same name, it follows a group of colored students as they navigate their way around an Ivy League school that isn’t as inclusive as it thinks itself to be. Although the website What’s On Netflix thinks the show might not be renewed, that’s highly unlikely given the current state of the world.
Elsewhere, they’ve got films like Malcom X, Da 5 Bloods, Mudbound and many, many more. Suffice it to say, there’s a lot in Netflix‘s new Black Lives Matter section to enjoy and we look forward to seeing what else they add in the coming weeks.

Star Trek Actor Recalls How He Almost Accidentally Killed Harrison Ford
Garrett Wang’s first big role in Hollywood was playing Ensign Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager. But his career could have been over before really getting off the ground. That’s because he nearly killed Harrison Ford.
Wang and his former Voyager co-star, Robert Duncan McNeill, launched The Delta Flyers podcast where they re-watch the series and talk about their time working on the show. In the first episode, Wang recalled the casting process he went through to land the role and explained that he was driving through the Paramount parking lot when Ford stepped out in front of his car.
“I’m actually speeding around the parking lot, and I come around this one bend, and this guy in a suit walks between two cars right in front of my car, so I slam on my breaks,” Wang recalls in the podcast episode. “You know when you almost have an accident; your heart is beating a thousand miles a minute? I lock eyes with this dude in the suit, and it’s Harrison Ford! I look at him, and I go ‘Oh my god! I almost killed Han Solo!’ I would have been hated by nerds everywhere!
“I remember reading the Variety paper, our Hollywood trade paper, the next day, and on the front page was a photo that said ‘Harrison Ford at Paramount Studios for the Clear and Present Danger screening.’ He was there for that, based on the Tom Clancy novel, wearing that same suit I almost maimed him in. He could have been a cripple, because of me.”
It’s a crazy what-if. Fortunately, Ford went about his day and his career and Wang appeared on Voyager for seven seasons.
As fans will know, Ford has had a number of near misses in his life, including more than one involving flying. He crashed his own plane on a golf course a few years ago and in a separate incident, he flew low over an American Airlines plane. Furthermore, earlier this year, he misheard instructions from an air traffic controller and could have collided with a two-seat gyroplane.
Also, you know that scar on his chin? He got that in a car accident where he slammed into a telephone pole. This guy’s got more lives than a cat.
The 77-year-old needs to stay off the ground though because he’s still in high demand. He starred in The Call of the Wild earlier this year, he’s reportedly being eyed to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and he’s set to reprise his role as Indiana Jones for a fifth time. Despite his age, Harrison Ford is showing no signs of slowing down. As long as he doesn’t get hit by cars or crash flying airplanes, that is.

Inception Re-Release May Feature The Batman And The Suicide Squad Trailers
It felt like we were never going to get the blockbuster season of 2020 due to COVID-19. But the one movie playing chicken with the pandemic and refusing to move from its release date was Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Set to hit theaters on July 17th, this was going to be the first big film to jumpstart the industry and perhaps get things back to normal a bit.
But Warner Bros. finally relinquished that release date and pushed Tenet to the end of the month on July 31st. If the delay was meant to act as a precaution, I have no idea what two extra weeks will change. After all, movie theaters are in the process of reopening and Warner Bros. is planning to release another Nolan pic on the 17th instead.
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of Inception and the studio will be re-releasing it. But that’s not all, folks. In order to entice audiences to head to the theater, they’re also adding a few sneak peeks.
“Warner Bros. Pictures is partnering with exhibitors to invite audiences around the world to celebrate the 10th Anniversary re-release of Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed box office sensation Inception on July 17,” the studio said in a press release.
“This special anniversary theatrical event will also give audiences a never-before-seen look at footage from Nolan’s highly anticipated film Tenet, which will debut worldwide two weeks later, on July 31. Moviegoers will also be treated to an exclusive sneak peek of select films on Warner Bros.’ upcoming slate.”
The studio didn’t specify which films they’ll be previewing, but a safe assumption would be The Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs. Kong and Wonder Woman 1984. There’s also a chance we could get something from The Batman. The production was only three weeks into shooting when it was forced to shut down, but we’ve already gotten a glimpse of Robert Pattinson in the suit and the new Batmobile. Warner Bros. had planned to show new footage of some of their upcoming blockbusters at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, too, but the cancelling of the annual pop culture celebration meant the studio had to re-think its strategy.
It’d certainly be a good idea to add some exciting trailers onto this re-release, though. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Inception one more time in the theater and get brand new trailers of some highly-anticipated movies along with it? Especially a look at The Batman.

Gladiator 2 Producer Says Ridley Scott’s Working On It
Gladiator 2 seems to be gaining more and more traction. The long-gestating sequel has surprisingly been in the works for years and just a week ago, producer Walter F. Parkes finally revealed when the second movie will take place.
Now that we know the setting though, when is the film going to happen? Well, producer Doug Wick has been talking recently about the challenges of getting everyone’s schedules to line up as well as getting the story right so that it doesn’t tarnish the legacy of the first movie, and here’s what he had to say:
“Ridley would love to do it. It’s really all about getting something on paper,” Wick confirmed to ComicBook.com. “Everyone [involved with the original] loves the movie too much to ever consider cheaply exploiting it and making something that’s a shadow of it. It’s just really a clear creative problem, working on a script, and if we can ever get it to a place … Ridley’s working on it, it’s really just a question of whether we can get it to a place where it feels worthy to make it. It’s a real challenge.”
“But it’s also a real writing problem, too. Like any good movie, Gladiator works by the skin of its teeth, where this fight movie ends up adding up that way, and so, again, to take the best of what the audience is attached to, but make it fresh in some new incarnation, it’s really challenging. And, of course, the leading man is dead. If you do Godfather, you say, ‘Okay, the audience loves these stars in this wardrobe,’ and you bring back the old team.”
Based on these comments, it doesn’t sound like they’re anywhere close to finishing the script. If they’re so worried about making something to live up to Gladiator though, why make it in the first place?
The fact that Scott seems eager to do it is also surprising. After all, in addition to being the second-highest grossing movie of 2000, Gladiator won five Oscars including Best Actor for Russell Crowe and Best Picture. It was also a comeback for Scott, who had had a shaky period in the ‘90s. So it certainly set a high bar that will be tough to match.
The obvious setback with making a sequel is, of course, that Maximus (Crowe) dies at the end of the first film. Crowe is also 20 years older and not exactly in the same physical shape he was back then.
According to Wick though, the actor joked that a sequel could work after the movie’s big opening weekend all those years ago.
“Russell’s agent called me after the opening weekend, said, ‘I’ve got a great idea. They take the body around the corner of the arena, Russell gets off the stretcher and says, “Hey, it worked,” and they high-five,'” Wick recalled. “That would be the beginning of the next movie. He was pitching that it was a fake death so Russell could come back and do it.”
Gladiator is a celebrated film and spawned a rejuvenation of the sword-and-sandals genre. It was even going to get a re-release this summer for its 20-year anniversary. The thought of Gladiator 2 just sounds odd, though, and it’s unnecessary. Scott and Crowe kind of already made their follow-up period epic, too, and it was called Robin Hood. Remember that movie? No? I didn’t think so.

Artemis Fowl Is Now The Lowest-Rated Film To Premiere On Disney Plus
Artemis Fowl, Disney’s big budget fantasy movie based on a popular young adult series of books, is an unmitigated disaster. It’s also the lowest-rated film to premiere on Disney Plus.
Ahead of its official release on Friday, critics were able to screen it and let’s just say it’s earning its straight-to-video badge. The problem is though that unlike most movies which skip theaters, Artemis Fowl reportedly cost $125 million to make and had a prime summer release date. But COVID-19 nixed that plan.
Of the films that have premiered on the streaming platform, the critical rating based off of Rotten Tomatoes for Artemis Fowl is by far the lowest. The five movies to premiere before it were Lady and the Tramp, Noelle, Togo, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made and Stargirl. Togo and Timmy Failure received glowing reviews with 91% and 88%, respectively, and of the three remaining, only the Anna Kendrick/Bill Hader Christmas movie, Noelle, had a rotten score at 53%. Artemis, meanwhile, sits at 10%.
Every year, you can kind of predict which releases are going to bomb and Artemis Fowl felt like a prime suspect. YA adaptations aren’t exactly big anymore and the fantasy genre in general has not fared well lately. Another big Mouse House release, Tomorrowland, is a good comparison. Released five years ago in late May, the movie cost nearly $200 million to produce and barely made a dent. And that had Brad Bird behind the camera and George Clooney in front of it.
Despite a talented director and a fresh cast, Artemis Fowl will probably be remembered as an expensive flop that faded into obscurity on a streaming service. Perhaps they should have made it a show from the very beginning, like they’re doing with Percy Jackson.

Mark Ruffalo Celebrates Chris Evans’ Birthday With Adorable Pics
June 13th is a day of celebration for Marvel fans for one very special reason: it’s the birthday of Captain America himself Chris Evans! It hasn’t been just the fans who’ve been showing their love for the actor on social media today, though. His fellow Avengers star Mark Ruffalo shared a post for Evans’ birthday, which came with a couple of adorable pics.
“Happy birthday, @ChrisEvans!” Ruffalo wrote. “Wishing you all the best today, bro.” He message came with an image of himself and Evans enjoying each others’ company during an interview and a cool BTS photo from filming on Avengers: Infinity War, with Evans breaking character as Steve Rogers to pose for a snap on the quinjet set.
Ruffalo joined the MCU in 2012’s The Avengers as Bruce Banner AKA the Hulk, taking over from Edward Norton who played the part in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. He first shared the screen with Evans in that smash-hit crossover movie and has done so again in the three subsequent Avengers films, most recently Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately, there’s a very real chance Evans and Ruffalo won’t team up in the franchise again, seeing as the Infinity Saga is now complete and the OG Avengers are kaput.
Evans’ own Marvel tenure predates Ruffalo’s by a year, first starring in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The actor’s opened up of late about how difficult a decision it was for him to accept the part, even refusing the officer twice before his mom helped him make the decision to take a leap of faith and go for it. So thank you, Mrs. Evans!
With the Sentinel of Liberty last seen as an old man handing his shield to Sam Wilson, Evans may not be back in the MCU again, though that’s not set in stone. Mark Ruffalo, meanwhile, stands a good chance of returning in Disney Plus’ She-Hulk TV series.
All that’s left to say is… Happy birthday, Chris Evans!
