The polarization of the American electorate predated Facebook’s arrival on the scene. But a nagging question about the social network has been whether its viral mechanics — and the viral mechanics on YouTube, Twitter, and other platforms — have accelerated the split between the left and the right.
Today we have two stories that examine that phenomenon. The first concerns the fight over the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. At a time when the sharing of news articles on Facebook is in general decline, the wrenching battle over Kavanaugh has been a top performer on the site. And many of the top performing posts, reports Craig Silverman, are among the most partisan in nature:

Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The software giant started rolling out the update during the company’s Surface event earlier this week, but some Windows 10 immediately noticed their documents were being deleted. “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update.
Microsoft is now recommending that affected users contact the company directly, and if you’ve manually downloaded the October update then “please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.” It’s not clear how many Windows 10 users are affected...

During the Star Wars publishing panel earlier today at New York Comic Con, Random House Books announced that Alexander Freed will be writing a new novel called Alphabet Squadron, which will focus on “rebel pilots hunting down Imperials.” To long-time Star Wars readers, it sounds very much like the Expanded Universe’s X-Wing series.
Freed isn’t a stranger to the Star Wars franchise. He wrote Battlefront: Twilight Company and the novelization for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as a handful of short stories for Star Wars Insider magazine and several comics. There isn’t much more known beyond Random House’s brief description, aside from the fact that it’s set after Return of the Jedi. A temporary cover shows off the classic...
Tesla has officially released the ninth version of its in-car software, which includes a new dash cam feature, Atari games (playable when parked), improved navigation, and more in what the company calls its “most substantial update yet.” Software version 9.0, as it’s called, is available to download on all Tesla cars now. Owners just have to connect their cars to a Wi-Fi hotspot to begin the update.
There are no advances for Tesla’s driver assistance system, Autopilot, though. CEO Elon Musk promised earlier this year that Tesla would start unlocking more of the features that he says will eventually make the company’s cars completely able to drive themselves. But the first of those features, called Navigate, is now listed as “coming...
Last month, newly filed FCC documents suggested that Google may release an “Interactive Video Streaming Device” called the Home Hub. Now, a photo tweeted by YouTuber Jon Prosser appears to confirm the product with additional details about its capabilities.
The photo gives some broad details about what the Home Hub can do. Its basic functions are similar to a Google Home speaker: you can voice-control compatible smart home components, like lights, security cameras, TVs, and speakers. It will also have Voice Match for recognizing different people’s voice commands to bring up their calendars, reminders, commute, and more on the home screen. Unlike a smart speaker, the Home Hub is supposed to deliver “visual, immersive answers” from Google...
Welcome to Cheat Sheet, our brief breakdown-style reviews of festival films, VR previews, and other special event releases. This review comes from Austin’s Fantastic Fest.
Feature films have been inspired by an awful lot of random things — theme park rides, online fetish ads, plotless rhythm video games — but the horror-comedy You Might Be the Killer is likely the first film to directly adapt a viral Twitter thread. Back in July 2017, authors Chuck Wendig and Sam Sykes riffed out an entire narrative on Twitter where Sykes claimed he was a camp counselor dealing with a “crazed serial killer,” Wendig suggested that Sykes might be the killer himself, and the two writers walked through the story together. It was a winking, knowing thread,...

There’s also a woven band in black or a silvery gray with reflective thread woven in. The Watch comes with the Nike Run Club app and Nike Training Club app preinstalled, which offers over 180...

Today at New York Comic Con, Starz hosted a panel for the upcoming second season of its fantasy show American Gods, and showed off our first look at what’s to come in the show when it returns in 2019.
The trailer shows off the continuing story of Gaiman’s novel, which looks to be picking up even more fantastic elements — and gods, old and new —as Shadow (Ricky Whittle) and Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) continue their road trip across America. Also teased is the pending clash between the old gods of mankind’s past and the new gods, like Media and Technology, of the future. But mostly, American Gods seems content to just show off all the returning players from season one, which will have to suffice to tide fans over for now.
Some additional...

The title of Avengers 4 has been a huge mystery for Marvel fans ever since the film’s original moniker – simply Avengers: Infinity War – Part Two – was removed. We were hoping it might arrive once Infinity War hit cinemas, but even though the movie’s now been out for quite a while, there’s still no sign of the title materializing. Although, we’re definitely getting close.
As you’ve surely heard by now, an untimely leak threatened to spoil the big surprise last night, when MCU Cosmic told us that next May’s sequel will be called Avengers: Annihilation. That’s yet to be confirmed by Marvel, but Mark Ruffalo appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon tonight and told the talk show host that the title is already out there. In fact, he even revealed it himself, though unfortunately, it was bleeped out.
So, the big question now is, was Mark being serious? Is the title already out of the bag and was he referring to Annihilation? Or is this just Marvel’s way of trolling us and building some buzz before the official reveal, which will no doubt come soon?
At this stage, we imagine the studio will either confirm last night’s leak in the very near future or, switch things up and go with another title entirely (assuming Annihilation is even what it’s currently called). MCU Cosmic has a pretty solid track record though, so we’re inclined to believe that as of now, at least, this is indeed what Marvel’s settled on.
Regardless, with the first trailer said to be arriving in November, and leaks threatening to spoil the surprise, surely it’s only a matter of time now before Kevin Feige and co. lift the lid on Avengers 4‘s title. And as soon as we have something official to go on, we’ll be sure to let you know.
