Watch as SpaceX’s newest spacecraft attempts to escape a fake rocket emergency

(NASA/Joel Kowsky)

On Sunday, SpaceX is launching one of its last big flight tests for NASA, one that could ultimately pave the way for the company to fly people to space later this year. For this flight, SpaceX will test out the emergency escape system on its new passenger spacecraft — and will probably destroy a Falcon 9 rocket in the process.

The vehicle that SpaceX is testing is its new Crew Dragon capsule, a passenger spacecraft the company has been developing for NASA as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew program. Before NASA will let its astronauts fly on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, the agency wants to know that the vehicle can keep people safe in the unlikely event of an emergency. That’s what this weekend’s test, known as an in-flight abort test, is...

7 new trailers you should watch this week

Image: Sony Pictures

With all the noise around how there’ll probably never be a second season of Watchmen this week, I figured I should finally get around to writing about Watchmen since it’s been weeks since it wrapped up.

There was a ton I liked about the series: the show within a show; the oddball, barely explained side characters; the way it reframes some of the graphic novel’s biggest ideas. The Hooded Justice episode, in particular, was worth watching the entire season for. That hour is perhaps a better encapsulation of the show than the entirety of the show, and it feels so true to the book that it hardly seems like it wasn’t in there in the first place.

I did find the series’ structure a little frustrating, though. Very little actually happens during...

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Leaves 1,200 Theaters For Fifth Weekend

Though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker can now count itself among the nine 2019 releases to cross the billion-dollar mark at the global box office, the film’s commercial performance marks an unmistakable decline from the previous two installments in the Skywalker Saga.

On the domestic front, for example, Forbes is now reporting that the Sequel Trilogy finale has been pulled from over 1,200 theaters for its fifth weekend – a development that leaves The Rise of Skywalker screening in just 3,053 cinemas across the country.

To put these numbers into perspective, even Jumanji: The Next Level, which opened one week prior to The Rise of Skywalker, will be shown in 3,323 domestic theaters this weekend. And while J.J. Abrams’ latest feature has dropped 1,353 theaters in the past four weeks, the new Jumanji has dropped just 904 in five weeks.

In fact, just comparing the respective weekend hauls of each of these two franchise flicks paints a striking picture. On the one hand, Jumanji took in $26.2 million domestically on its fourth weekend and $14 million on its fifth. Meanwhile, The Rise of Skywalker managed $15.2 million on its fourth weekend and is expected to make just $12.2 million on its fifth. To put it bluntly, Abrams’ era-closing blockbuster is falling fast.

Of course, with a domestic total of $483.6 million and a global total of $1.003 billion, we’re surely past the point where Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker can be considered an outright box office bomb. Still, looking at the $1.333 billion total of 2017’s The Last Jedi (not to mention the $2.068 billion haul of The Force Awakens), you have to imagine that Disney was expecting a whole lot better from the much-hyped finale of the Skywalker Saga.

The Internet’s Freaking Out Over National Treasure 3 Happening

This is not a drill. I leave my desk for one afternoon and there it is: National Treasure 3 is in development, for real. Sequestered within an article about Bad Boys 4, The Hollywood Reporter relayed the news that Chris Bremner, one of that film’s writers, is also attached to pen National Treasure’s third installment. Of course, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as We Got This Covered told you months ago that the movie was in development, but it’s certainly exciting to hear.

After all, many a rumour has sifted through various outlets and many a dashed hope through internet message boards ever since the last outing in the franchise released more than 12 years ago. But now, for the first time, those message boards have had their faith repaid, and here are some of the Twittersphere’s more exulted reactions.

@DoDaFoo makes the bold claim that National Treasure 3 represents the best film news of the year.

It’s good, but there’s a long way to go.

Dialing back from a judgement of the entire year, @BreidyTV salutes the disclosure with the modest joy of a single day.

Good to see you’re enjoying yourself. Don’t celebrate by doing what Nicholas Cage says he’ll do in that gif. Your day might get significantly worse.

@Whos_Nick doubles down on the previous tweet with another of Cage’s more outlandish National Treasure quotes.

I’m not 100% sure what penalty stealing the Declaration of Independence would incur, but I’m 100% sure what penalty kidnapping the President would incur. Even if it is that President. For requisite advice, see above.

Meanwhile, @Alexayyyyyy continues the gif theme with the most emotional response of the bunch.

Is that even possible? Would that be a crime? Definitely do not leave your answers to those rhetorical questions in the comments.

Here are a few more just for good measure, as well:

National Treasure

When’s National Treasure 3 coming out and who will it star, nobody knows yet. Nobody except Disney. But it is in the production queue and if people are this buzzed about the prospect of its existence, then they might just explode when it actually comes out.

Dexter And Community Stars To Headline New Animated Mortal Kombat Movie

With all of these talks of multiverses and shared universes, whatever happened to other dimensions? Nobody ever talks about the Dreamrealm, the Chaosrealm, or Outworld anymore, ya know? Oh…you don’t? Well, I’m talking, of course, about Mortal KombatI’m sure you are all eagerly awaiting that new live-action foray back into the titular deadly fighting tournament, but before that comes out, we’re getting an animated feature with quite the cast.

The animated feature is to be called Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge. The Community leading man McHale is set to voice egotistical movie star Johnny Cage in some perfect casting. Cage’s love interest and immaculate kicker Sonya Blade is going to be voiced by Dexter veteran actress Jennifer Carpenter, who some may remember more from that [REC] remake Quarantine. While there’s no set date for release, Warner Brothers assures everyone it’ll be out in the first half of this year.

Well, who the heck else is gonna be here? Mortal Kombat is known for it’s eccentric and diverse cast of characters, and it seems like Scorpion’s Revenge won’t let anybody down in that regard. We’re gonna be seeing Sub-Zero, Goro, Kitana, somebody named Demon Torturer, and, of course, Scorpion, who’s “Get Over Here!” (TM) catchphrase will be shouted out by original yellow ninja voice actor Patrick Seitz. At least the filmmaker’s aren’t making the classic blunder of recasting perfection. Good on ’em!

Many offshoots of this series, from video game sidestories to previous attempts at reboots and sequels, have crashed and burned before. Fans are probably pretty tired of getting their hopes up for more filmic projects related to the fighting game series. This one seems like a nice safe bet, as Warner Brothers has a pretty good track record about making some alright direct-to-video animated features. Hopefully this foray back into the Mortal Kombat dimension will be just as fun as the original film.

Lenovo is building another standalone VR headset

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Lenovo hasn’t made the best bets in virtual reality so far, but it seems like the company’s about to try again — according to a new FCC filing for the “Lenovo VR3030S,” which company docs identify as an upcoming standalone VR headset.

Standalone means that like Lenovo’s previous Mirage Solo or the Oculus Quest, it shouldn’t require you to plug in a phone or PC, because the processing power is built right in. But where the ill-fated Mirage Solo relied on Google’s effectively defunct Daydream VR platform, a new headset will presumably run on a different one: perhaps Valve’s Steam VR, Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality, or maybe even Facebook’s Oculus?

Speaking of Lenovo’s unlucky bets in virtual reality, it’s a little-known fact that the...

Goosebumps Creator Announces The Return Of Slappy The Dummy

For the better part of three decades, Goosebumps author R.L. Stine has been scaring children (and some adults) with his neverending series of creepy creatures and characters. Even though the original run of books only lasted a few years, the franchise has carried on with numerous spin-off series, the iconic TV show, a few video games, and of course, two blockbuster films starring Jack Black. While diehard Goosebumps fans could easily argue for hours on end about Stine’s most scary character, many would probably agree that Slappy the Dummy takes the cake.

As a sort of less violent take on Chucky from Child’s Play, Slappy is a ventriloquist dummy who comes to life, terrorizing whatever hapless teenager brought him home while also scapegoating them for all the trouble he causes – seriously, don’t underestimate Slappy’s gaslighting abilities. After appearing in both of the Goosebumps movies, the doll from hell has been propelled into the limelight; heck, Pixar even based one of their characters in Toy Story 4 off of him. It seems that R.L. Stine knows just how popular Slappy is, too, seeing as how he’s now bringing him back for an all-new book.

Goosebumps

A couple of years ago, Stine launched the Goosebumps SlappyWorld series of novels, which are narrated by none other than Slappy himself. Now, as ComicBook.com reports, everyone’s least favorite ventriloquist doll is coming back in a book of his own called Diary of a Dummy, which is set to release on March 3rd. It’s not entirely clear what this new installment will be about, but if we were to hedge our bets, we imagine it’ll involve two twin preteens who find themselves in a whole lot of trouble after they stumble across Slappy and bring him home.

Chances are, you’ve probably outgrown the book series, but we’re curious, do you think you’ll check this one out for old times’ sake, or will you use this opportunity to introduce your younger family members to Goosebumps? Let us know in the comments below!
