Alphabet’s health division gets FDA clearance to test EKG smartwatch feature

Alphabet’s health division, Verily, has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Study smart watch for an “on-demand ECG feature.” The Study Watch, announced in April 2017, is not a consumer smartwatch, but instead meant as a test platform for the Google-adjacent company to research how to best gather health data on a wearable.

Back when it was announced, Verily said that it had an ECG feature alongside the usual stuff you expect on a smartwatch — but it didn’t receive clearance from the FDA for it until today (oddly, in the midst of a government shutdown).

When Apple announced its electrocardiogram feature for the Apple Watch, it seemed like a completely unique and differentiating feature. Now, it’s starting to feel like EKG is about to...

Shaky rings help scientists measure Saturn’s days

A day on Saturn lasts for 10 hours, 33 minutes, and 38 seconds, according to a paper published in The Astrophysical Journal that used wobbles in Saturn’s rings to make the calculation. That’s several minutes shorter than older approximations of the gas giant’s day, but the new timetable lines up with some previous mathematical estimates.

It was hard for researchers to figure out how long a day was on Saturn for a few reasons. First, the planet has an incredibly thick and rotating atmosphere, which obscured the inner surface. That’s usually not a huge problem. When they can’t see how fast a planet’s surface is spinning, astronomers can generally measure movements in its magnetic field to figure out what’s going on inside. But Saturn’s...

The FCC has reopened its device approval system during the government shutdown

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reopening its hardware certification program amid the partial government shutdown, averting a potential delay in releasing new phones and other electronics. The FCC said today that it was reactivating the Equipment Authorization System, reversing a decision announced on January 2nd. Several other FCC services will remain unavailable, and the FCC isn’t offering support staff for the system until after the shutdown ends.

Many electronics must receive FCC certification before going to market, and a prolonged closure could theoretically push back their release. Last week, the Telecommunications Industry Association warned that phone carriers might have to slow the rollout of new 5G phones if the...

Teenage Engineering debuts an affordable entry into modular synthesis

Swedish audio company Teenage Engineering is expanding their popular Pocket Operator synth line with a new line of self-assembly modular units called the 16, the 170, and the 400. Meant to be a more affordable entry point into modular synthesis than most Eurorack modules — which can easily balloon into thousands of dollars — Teenage Engineering says their goal was to create a “poor man’s modular.”

The 400 is an analog modular synthesizer with what Teenage Engineering says is a “warm natural analog sound.” It is priced at $499, and comes with three oscillators, a 16-step sequencer, filter, LFO, two envelopes, noise, random generator, two VCAs, a mixer, speaker box, and power pack. The 16 is a musical keyboard with sequencer and...

Federal Trade Commission officials have discussed imposing a record-setting fine on Facebook after a year of major data breaches and revelations of improper data sharing, according to the Washington Post. Facebook may have violated a 2012 agreement with the government to protect users’ data and make clear statements about their privacy.

Europe’s controversial ‘link tax’ in doubt after member states rebel

Copyright activists just scored a major victory in the ongoing fight over the European Union’s new copyright rules. An upcoming summit to advance the EU’s copyright directive has been canceled, as member states objected to the incoming rules as too restrictive to online creators.

The EU’s forthcoming copyright rules had drawn attention from activists for two measures, designated as Article 11 and Article 13, that would give publishers rights over snippets of news content shared online (the so-called “link tax”) and increase platform liability for user content. Concerns about those two articles led to the intial proposal being voted down by the European parliament in July, but a version with new safeguards was approved the following...

Spotify will reportedly release an in-car music player later this year

Spotify is planning to release an in-car music player with voice controls later this year, anonymous sources told The Financial Times. Spotify has previously teased this type of product with pop-up screens in the Spotify app seen by some customers, as The Verge reported back in April, but today’s news further confirms its existence. The Times says the device will be priced around $100. Its rumored release comes as companies including Apple (with CarPlay), Google (Assistant and Android Auto), and Amazon (Alexa) compete for in-car dominance.

Spotify’s very first hardware device will attempt to deliver music more directly to customers instead of going through Apple’s CarPlay or Google’s Android Auto, platforms found on newer vehicles that...

The Punisher Star Wants To Play Batman In A Completely Fresh Way

Ben Barnes plays crazed villain Billy Russo AKA Jigsaw on Marvel’s The Punisher, but he’s also got his eye on not only switching to the side of the heroes but also swapping the House of Ideas for DC. The British star, also known for Westworld, has revealed that he’d love to play Batman some day and approach the iconic character in a whole new way.

Heroic Hollywood spoke to Barnes to promote The Punisher season 2 and asked what role he’d like to play outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This led Barnes to recall his own makeshift childhood cosplay as the Dark Knight and his adult desire to follow in the footsteps of fellow Brit Christian Bale and offer his own spin on the Bat, something he also aimed to do as Jigsaw.

I was just saying earlier to one of the journalists. I came across recently this picture of me when and I’m about 4 years old. And I have a little bit of string around my neck with a yellow piece of paper and a black bat drawn on the bit of paper. It is the saddest little Batman costume you’ve ever seen. I think that would be up there for me in something to try and find a new way to do. I think the way Christian Bale did it where he completely reinvented it which is a little bit what I was trying to do with Jigsaw in season 2. We never refer to him as Jigsaw necessarily so it didn’t feel quite honest to do exactly what they did in the Warzone comics and stuff but to find a new way around things is an interesting thing. With TV and movies these days you have find a way to make it new, fresh and interesting. So, yeah that would be pretty cool thought.”

Luckily for Barnes, he might have an opportunity to try out for the role of a lifetime right about now. All signs are pointing to Ben Affleck having hung up his cowl for good, leaving director Matt Reeves free to look around for a new lead for The Batman, which he’s taking his sweet time developing. As of this month, though, Jack O’Connell – another Brit – sits as the favorite to take on the job. There’s a while until this is made official, however, as word has it that Warner Bros. won’t unveil their new Batman until May or June.

Either way, Barnes is probably done playing Jigsaw. The Punisher season 2 has been received relatively warmly by critics so far, but it’s surely only a matter of time before the show, starring Jon Bernthal as gun-toting vigilante Frank Castle, joins Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil on the Netflix scrapheap – with Jessica Jones soon to follow.

Han Solo Rumored To Feature In Star Wars: Episode IX Through Unused Footage

It’s been a rumor for a little while now that Han Solo could be making a comeback in Star Wars: Episode IX, be it through flashback or other means, but putting aside the all-round lack of evidence for the idea, one potential obstacle to getting this done just might be Harrison Ford, who seems pretty happy for his run in the franchise to have ended with The Force Awakens. But while Ford may not be itching to return, a new rumor shared by the Express alleges that Han could be showing up regardless by way of unused footage from his lengthy run in the series.

To elaborate, it’s said that Disney and Lucasfilm are going through deleted scenes from The Force Awakens that could be used in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming trilogy-closer. On top of that, the team is supposedly looking for pieces of dialogue from across all his films, potentially modifying his voice, and mixing these lines as dialogue into the new scenes.

As it stands, these claims should probably be taken with a sizable grain of salt, though we don’t doubt that the technology is there for such a feat, and seeing how Lucasfilm is known to be giving the late Carrie Fisher more or less the same treatment, perhaps it’s not so absurd to think that the team might be willing to give this a try. Besides, knowing the nostalgic that Abrams is, you can imagine he’d at least be tempted to look for a way of reuniting Han, Leia and Luke for the grand finale of the Sequel Trilogy.

Whether or not Abrams should attempt such an act of digital trickery is its own point of debate, but since hearsay is all we’ve got to go on, perhaps it’s best if we wait for a little more evidence to come our way before we start taking this report seriously. In any case, we’ll find out if the original Han still has one more movie left in him when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
