For the longest time, Marvel Studios was reluctant to spill the details on Annette Bening’s role in the upcoming Captain Marvel, but in just this past week, the 20th Century Women star’s involvement in Carol Danvers’ solo debut has been getting a lot less mysterious.
A few days ago, for instance, Bening was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she confirmed the previous rumors that she’ll be playing the Supreme Intelligence. At the same time, it’s also been a popular prediction for a while now that the Kree leader is simply assuming the form of another MCU character from Carol’s past, and sure enough, the new TV spot that debuted during the Oscars heavily hints that Bening will assume a second role as Carol’s mother.
The preview, viewable above, sees Bening’s character alongside Carol on the site of a U.S. Air Force base. When the future Captain Marvel expresses her desire to take to the skies, Bening’s character assure her that she’ll get there soon enough. Cue footage of the space adventure to come. Overall, the TV spot certainly seems to be implying that Bening will play the mother of the MCU’s most powerful hero, though if recent reports are anything to go by, then Marvel Studios may still be saving at least one more twist for the film itself.
Regardless, we don’t have long to wait now until Captain Marvel completes its journey to theaters, and if the early reactions are anything to go by, then Marvel should have another critical and commercial hit on their hands. You can judge for yourself if the film is worth all the hype when it arrives in cinemas on March 8th, 2019.
