Is Jude Law Playing Someone Other Than Mar-Vell In Captain Marvel?

From the moment Jude Law signed along the dotted line, the Internet at large jumped to the conclusion that the soon-to-be Hogwarts Headmaster was about to play the great and powerful Mar-Vell opposite Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. But now we’re not so sure.

Buried within Entertainment Weekly’s ongoing coverage are one or two tidbits which suggest Law is actually playing someone other than Mar-Vell – even if his mystery character is described as a “key piece” of the Captain Marvel plot.

He is, essentially, a “devout” warrior driven by his faith in Starforce and the Kree, while the advent of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel means that his character has yet another mentee to train. In fact, he sees Carol Danvers as a sort of “pet project,” one whose temperament needs to be brought in line if she is to reach her full potential.

Here’s an extract from EW’s ongoing coverage:

And Law is a key piece of Captain Marvel. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s superhero epic centers on Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a human pilot with alien Kree DNA. When the film begins, Carol is living on the Kree planet of Hala, and she’s a part of the specialized military team known as Starforce — essentially the Seal Team Six of space. Its members include Carol, Djimon Hounsou’s Korath (returning from Guardians of the Galaxy), and Gemma Chan’s sniper Minn-Erva. Law’s character is the leader of the group (the filmmakers declined to reveal his name), and he’s Kree to the core.

Now, we should stress that there’s still a very good chance Jude Law will be unveiled as Mar-Vell once we approach Captain Marvel‘s March 2019 release date – not to mention the debut of that long-anticipated teaser trailer, which is seemingly two weeks out. Still, EW’s nebulous report casts doubt over his character, and we imagine that’s exactly what Marvel Studios wants as we inch closer and closer to the studio’s first female-led comic book movie.

And according to Kevin Feige, it’ll be the first of many to come.
