South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho has reportedly punched his ticket for Train to Busan 2, a sequel to the cult zombie movie of 2016.
Word comes by way of AllKPop (h/t Bloody Disgusting), where a representative of Sang-ho claimed that the director has begun drafting up plans for a follow-up. It’s said to be operating under the codename ‘Peninsula’ and will “revisit the same zombie virus that was seen in the original movie, except this time the focus will be expanded to the entire Korean peninsula.”
A bigger scope (and bigger stakes!) will no doubt result in a different breed of horror movie – part of Train to Busan‘s allure was the contained nature of Park Joo-suk’s story, which took place on a bullet train speeding through a rapidly deteriorating world. The zombie action came thick and fast, too, so we’re intrigued to find out how Yeon Sang-ho and his team will be approaching this new chapter.
For the record, Seoul Station took things in the opposite direction by delivering an animated prequel to Yeon Sang-ho’s genre thriller. This time around, though, the filmmaker is seemingly ready to unleash his zombie virus upon the entire Korean peninsula, though whether his admittedly fascinating idea comes to fruition is another question entirely.
Train to Busan 2 (or ‘Peninsula’, as it’s currently known) has only just entered the formative stages of development, meaning it’ll likely be another few months before Yeon Sang-ho is ready to share any concrete details about his horror sequel. But fans can at least take solace that the filmmaker wants to continue his apocalyptic saga with a movie that outstrips its predecessor in scope and ambition. More on this project as it develops.
