The cast for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is slowly but surely starting to take shape. Some of Task Force X will be made up of anti-villains who we already saw in David Ayer’s 2016 movie – Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis as organ grinder Amanda Waller – but they’ll also be joined by some new blood that’s been brought on board for the sequel, like Idris Elba (as Deathstroke?) and John Cena (Peacemaker?).
Throw in rumors of Michael Rooker and Benicio del Toro circling roles as well, and it’s looking like Warner Bros. and Gunn have assembled an all-star cast for the pic. That alone gives us hope that it’ll be a step up from its predecessor, but now we’re hearing even more promising news which once again has us feeling optimistic about Task Force X’s next big screen outing.
According to Geeks WorldWide’s Thomas Polito, The Suicide Squad is going to be rated R. The studio hasn’t confirmed this yet, but Polito’s intel is usually pretty solid and given the direction WB has taken some of their other DC films in recently, coupled with the fact that Birds of Prey might be rated R as well, this is entirely believable.
Of course, an R-rating is far from a guarantee that the movie will be a hit, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction and it’ll be fascinating to see Gunn put his own mature spin on the property. Especially since we’ve seen R-rated work from him before in the form of Slither and Super, two great movies.
But we digress. Until Warner Bros. confirms this latest scoop, all we know for certain is that The Suicide Squad opens in cinemas on August 6th, 2021, and though its predecessor certainly add some flaws, it sure does seem like James Gunn is cooking up something truly special here.
