It’s arguably the most important moment in The Avengers. When Loki murders loveable S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, the assembled heroes are finally able to put their squabbles aside in order to avenge their friend’s death and save the world.
Of course, Marvel fans know that Coulson’s fate wasn’t actually permanent, as he was soon resurrected in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. As we haven’t seen him in the movies until Captain Marvel, though, it seems that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes aren’t aware that he’s actually alive. Or are they?
Gamespot spoke to Clark Gregg recently and put the question to him. Judging by the guest stars we’ve had on AoS, Gregg suggested who might’ve found out the truth. According to the actor’s theories, there’s only one superhero in the know, and you can probably guess who that is.
“We know that Nick Fury knows, obviously, we’ve seen him. And I feel like Tony Stark knows things–he just finds a way to know things–but I think the two of them have had a blunt conversation about it and decided not to share it further. And then we had Lady Sif promise not to tell Thor–but I don’t know how much I believe that. And Maria Hill knows, she’s spent time with him–but I think everyone else is just keeping it a secret.”
Gregg’s assessment sounds about right to us. Tony Stark’s a smart guy who’s involved with the government and S.H.I.E.L.D. and would likely uncover the underground adventures of Coulson and his team. The Avengers are also always keeping things they should probably share with each other to themselves, too, so we can buy that Iron Man wouldn’t tell his pals that Coulson’s still around.
The character’s cinematic return in Captain Marvel might not affect this as it’s set long before the events of The Avengers, but it does give us hope that there are more movies appearances for Coulson in the future. Ones that could take place in the present and therefore finally see him revealed to the whole team. Honestly, we’d love to see this occur in Avengers: Endgame, but with so much else going on, we’re not expecting it.
