Original Pirates Of The Caribbean Writer In Talks To Pen The Reboot

For a second there, it looked like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was finally set to go into retirement, but according to a new report from Discussing Film, Disney is currently in talks with another writer to pen the planned reboot.

Back in October, the news broke that Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had been brought on board to create a fresh start for the swashbuckling series. Following their departure from the project last month, however, there was talk that Disney might give up on the idea altogether and let the franchise end with 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. Now it seems that those predictions of the property’s death may have been premature, since Terry Rossio is apparently being eyed to pick up where Reese and Wernick left off.

Rossio’s writing credits can be found on many a Hollywood adventure film from the recent decades, including Shrek, The Lone Ranger and the 1992 Aladdin. But more relevant than any of that experience is the fact that he worked on the scripts for the first four Pirates movies, as well as receiving a story credit for the fifth.

The departure of Johnny Depp notwithstanding, it sounds like Disney is hoping to stick with what they know, though the return of Rossio doesn’t exactly fit with production chief Sean Bailey’s previous claim that they’re hoping to bring “a new energy and vitality” to the franchise.

Regardless, assuming things actually move forward for the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, it sounds like the movie is still a long way from reaching cinemas. In the meantime, Rossio’s next script to make the jump to screens will be Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set for release on March 13th, 2020.
