Though it could be argued that the series ended on a perfect enough note back in 2010, it’s not like fans are going to hold back on seeing Toy Story 4 later this year, and if this latest TV spot for the film – which dropped right after the Super Bowl – is any indication of what’s to come, then it seems like Pixar may have yet another hit on their hands.
That’s a good thing, too, as this particular sequel has been a long time coming, with it originally scheduled to release in summer 2017 (before it was replaced with Cars 3), then summer 2018 (before it was replaced by Incredibles 2) and now, June of this year. Of course, part of the delay was due to writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack departing the project due to “philosophical differences” – which was likely connected to Pixar founder John Lasseter’s sexual harassment allegations – but things got back on track when Stephany Folsom was hired to rewrite their work.
Now, with only a handful of months to go before the film arrives, Disney’s starting to ramp up the promotion and what better place to show off Toy Story 4 in all its glory than the Super Bowl, right? And though there’s not a ton of new footage here for fans to feast on, this promo is no doubt going to get folks pretty excited to catch back up with all their old favorites – and meet a couple new faces, too.
For more on what to expect, here’s the official synopsis:
“Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy. Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”) and produced by Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”), Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 4 ventures to U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.”
So, it sounds like another road trip’s on the way, and while there will surely be a few laughs to be had, both Tim Allen and Tom Hanks have already teased some emotionally heavy scenes to come, with the former making an unexpected comparison to Avengers: Infinity War, the latter saying that the ending will be “a moment in history,” and both revealing that they struggled to get through the film’s finale.
Those are some big words, but we’ll see if the film can live up to the expectations that’ve been set upon it when Toy Story 4 arrives in theaters on June 21st, 2019.
