James Cameron May Be Returning To The Alien Franchise

Stop your grinnin’ and drop your linen.

It looks like there could be a distinct possibility that veteran writer-director James Cameron may be returning to the Alien franchise, which he helped to create. In a recent interview with IGN, he and Robert Rodriguez were chatting about their new movie, Alita: Battle Angel, when the discussion shifted focus toward the director’s previous work on the Alien and Terminator series.

Firstly, Cameron praised Tim Miller’s directorial efforts on the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate, which is a brand new entry in the Terminator franchise that’s scheduled to release later this year. Next, Cameron was asked if he could contact director Neill Blomkamp about his rumored Alien movie, which is apparently a continuation of Ripley’s story after Aliens. In return, Cameron replied: “I’m working on that.”

It’s been a tough time for fans of the iconic Xenomorph. The sci-fi franchise’s latest pic, Alien: Covenant, suffered from soft box office earnings and was met with a lukewarm reception from a large portion of the fanbase. On top of this was Disney’s long and protracted acquisition of Fox’s cinematic properties, which probably didn’t help speed up production on a sequel, either. To make matters even more complicated, some fans still believe that Scott’s prequel films deserve closure after the cliffhanger from Alien: Covenant.

Long story short, the Alien franchise is currently in a state of disrepair. However, if there’s anyone who can help fix it and get it back on track, it’s got to be James Cameron, right? Not only has he directed Academy Award-winning films like Titanic and Avatar, but he’s also delivered us a bunch of bonafide sci-fi classics in Aliens, The Terminator and T2: Judgement Day, to name but a few.

But how do you feel about Cameron returning to the iconic franchise that he helped to create? Would you prefer Disney to pursue Ridley Scott’s rumored Alien: Awakening sequel? Or would you like both films to be green-lit by the Mouse House? Be sure to let us know in the usual place.
