2017’s Power Rangers reboot was not the blockbuster Saban was hoping for. Once upon a time, they had plans for multiple movies to follow it, but the studio issued a radio silence on the potential of the franchise after the film was met with middling reviews and a disappointing box office gross. Nonetheless, fans have been hoping for a sequel to materialize at some point, especially as Hasbro recently bought the brand from Saban.
Now, it looks like they’ve got their wish, as in a statement from CEO Brian Goldner, it’s been revealed that the company is currently in the process of looking for “a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release.” Presumably, this means Lionsgate is out for the sequel, and given Hasbro’s current relationship with Paramount, we imagine they might be a likely candidate to take over.
Either way, it’s good to know that the wheels are in motion now and we’ll be seeing more of the franchise on the big screen. And in the form of a continuation to last year’s film, no less. After all, we’d heard rumblings of more Power Rangers movies coming our way, but it was thought that Hasbro might try to reboot the property again given that 2017’s effort underperformed.
As for where a sequel could go in terms of story, well, it certainly won’t be short on material to deal with. Apart from the thirty years of TV series to pick from, the first Power Rangers left several plot threads dangling, including a possible return for Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa and the introduction of Tommy the Green Ranger.
Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, though. Right now, it sounds like Hasbro’s only in the very earliest stages of development for Power Rangers 2 and there’s obviously a chance that things will fall through. Still, it’s hard not to get excited about what the future might hold for the Rangers and as soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
