By the time Star Wars: Episode IX brings the current Sequel Trilogy to a close later this year, it seems that the cameras might already be rolling for the next era of the film franchise.
Star Wars News Net has heard some intriguing claims from a source who has apparently provided proof that they’ve worked on all of Disney’s Star Wars movies. It’s said that this anonymous tipster was approached about working on another entry in the franchise that’s expected to begin filming in the fall. Apparently, the art departments are in the design phase for the project right now, while the screenplay is in the process of being finalized. Speaking of the script, this will allegedly be the new Star Wars series that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been working on.
As for the content of this upcoming trilogy, it’s said that the movies will be set during the Old Republic, “hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.” The report also mentions that Disney wants to “open up the Star Wars timeline,” and appeal more to the Game of Thrones crowd. Lastly, the source claims to be “95% confident” that this project will be going into production.
While none of the above intel has been confirmed, Entertainment Weekly reported a few months ago that Star Wars will be Benioff and Weiss’s next gig after the final season of Game of Thrones, making a fall production date seem plausible enough. What’s more, with Rian Johnson currently busy with his next movie Knives Out, it’s looking very likely that the pair will start work on their saga before the Last Jedi helmsman gets to his.
They’ll be plenty of time for further details on each of those planned trilogies, but before Benioff and Weiss can show us what’s next for the franchise, Star Wars: Episode IX will be wrapping up the current era when it comes out on December 20th.
