The Purge 5 Has Found Its Director

With our current decade almost at its end, it’s interesting to reflect on how many new horror franchises have popped up during that time frame – and a fair amount of them were actually hatched over at Blumhouse. In addition to bringing us thrilling sagas such as Insidious, Happy Death Day and Sinister – the latter of which was cut too short due to an under-performing sequel – The Purge series has emerged as one of the best nail-biters in modern cinema, at least in my view.

To be completely honest, I wasn’t entirely enthralled by the original Purge flick, but it was the sequel that really caught my attention because that’s where the “all crime is legal for twelve hours” concept was truly given room to thrive. Then, we we treated to yet another sequel, a prequel and even a TV series. Who could’ve dreamed the story would come so far?

Now, the time has come to discuss the future of the franchise, as Everardo Gout (Days of Grace, Luke Cage) has been named as the director for what we’ll have to refer to as The Purge 5 for the time being. And if that weren’t enough, series creator James DeMonaco is back on as screenwriter.

Right now, no plot details have been given, so we can’t tell you exactly where this new chapter fits on the timeline. On the one hand, it could be set after The First Purge, but it was previously stated that the fifth installment will end the franchise. If so, one would think it’ll fall after Election Year, even though the Purge as a concept was abolished at the end of that one.

The Purge 5 is set to arrive in theaters on July 10th, 2020. Jason Blum, James DeMonaco, Sébastien K. Lemercier, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are each on board to produce.
