Earlier this month, Captain Marvel became the first female-led superhero film to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. And while Brie Larson has already made sure to thank her fans for the huge milestone, the actress has also fired back at the critics, arguing that the success of Carol Danvers’ standalone outing shouldn’t come as that great a surprise.
Speaking at the Women in the World conference in New York City recently, she explained how she rarely felt pressure during the production of Captain Marvel, but the day before it opened, the Oscar-winner said she had some serious anxiety about the pic’s performance, which she now feels was unwarranted.
“We put unnecessary pressure on ourselves,” Larson said. “I understand film history. I know that the film industry started with a majority of women. It started with women filmmakers. This weird idea that women maybe can’t open movies or are not important to storytelling or the female story is not high art, it’s bogus. I don’t want to for a second buy into it.”
One person who certainly agrees with the actress is Steve Ruppel, a Wisconsin Marvel fan who’s now seen the film so many times that he’s actually broken a Guinness World Record. Apparently, the record for most viewings of Captain Marvel was 104, which Steve passed after seeing the movie a whopping 116 times.
“I thought it was the most insane thing ever, I thought it was impossible. I wasn’t even sure why it was even a record, but I thought after a while ‘I should probably do that,'” Ruppel told CBS 58.
Apparently, the most showings he did in one day was seven and to prevent himself from getting bored, he would “pay attention to things in the background and even pick up on details like what day the movie actually takes place.”
“So there’s one particular scene in the movie where in the background there’s a calendar,” said Ruppel. “And it says June of 1995. And then later on in that particular day, there’s a full moon. So at the end, I just Googled when there was a full moon in June of 1995. And it came out to be Tuesday, June 13th of 1995,” he said.
And as for why he decided to do this in the first place, well, apparently he just loves superhero movies.
“I love superhero movies, and so this was a pretty good fit. I knew it was going to be around for a while, and I thought it would probably be a good choice for this particular record. Looking back on it now, I might almost consider a Disney movie, because they’re usually shorter and probably around for a while, but that singing would drive me crazy. It really would,” Ruppel said.
Talk about dedication, eh? Clearly, this guy seriously enjoyed Captain Marvel, and with Avengers: Endgame now just days away, we imagine we’ll be hearing about a lot of people trying to do something similar with that film. Though at 3 hours long, it’d truly be impressive if anyone sees it as many times as Ruppel saw the Brie Larson-led flick.
