Though the absence of a proper Fast and Furious film has no doubt left a car-shaped hole in the summer blockbuster schedule, it appears as if the upcoming spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw will provide enough action and thrills to fill the gap.
In case you haven’t been keeping up, the movie places the spotlight on Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw as they team up alongside new players like Vanessa Kirby, Eiza Gonzalez, Eddie Marsan, Stephanie Vogt and, of course, Idris Elba, who’s playing the villain of the piece. It’s an enviable cast, but it seems that there’s one person who Universal has been keeping in the shadows, waiting until the film hits theaters to reveal him.
As you likely surmised by the title, we’re talking about Keanu Reeves, who’s said to have a secret role in the spinoff. But before we go any further, we should warn you that minor spoilers will follow.
Still with us? Good, because according to That Hashtag Show, Reeves will be playing the villain of the movie. True, the promotion for Hobbs & Shaw has so far painted Elba as the bad guy, but THS says that there’s someone else behind the scenes pulling the strings, and that’s Reeves’ character.
It’s unclear how large a role he’ll play, or if he’ll even show up during the main bulk of the film at all – as he could be saved for the post-credits scene to set up the sequel – but THS claim that he’s indeed involved and from the sounds of it, he’s going to have a pretty big presence in the franchise moving forward.
All things considered, this isn’t too surprising, either, with Keanu Reeves seeing a bit of a career resurgence lately thanks to the John Wick movies. Not to mention that David Leitch, who’s worked with Reeves many times in the past, is directing Hobbs & Shaw. We likely won’t find out more about how he factors into things until much closer to release, but it’ll be fun to see The Matrix star joining the franchise regardless.
