John Boyega Says Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Is The War That Ends Everything

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has long been marketed as the final installment in the Skywalker Saga. But in an interview with MTV News, John Boyega emphasized just how definitive a conclusion the film will be to the franchise’s current era.

When the Finn actor was asked if he thinks he’ll ever reprise his role for future projects, Boyega claimed that he didn’t think he ever would, arguing that this year’s release puts such a decisive full stop at the end of the series:

“Honestly, no, seriously, I just–this is really that movie, I think everyone doesn’t believe it, but this is that war that just ends everything. So I’m just like, wow, you know?”

Of course, we can already feel pretty confident in saying that The Rise of Skywalker won’t be the last we hear of the Star Wars franchise on the big screen. For one thing, Rian Johnson is still pushing forward with plans for his own trilogy, while Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on a series of their own.

So unless both of those planned sagas are set before the events of the Sequel Trilogy, you have to imagine that the Star Wars galaxy will still see its share of blockbuster-sized conflict post-Rise of Skywalker. In fact, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned just recently that there are certain Sequel Trilogy characters they “may very well want to see down the line in the future.”

That being said, Disney CEO Bob Iger claimed earlier this month that the series is going on hiatus once the latest trilogy wraps. So if Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is unlikely to bring us the “war that just ends everything,” it will at least mark the start of a cooling-off period. Either way, we’ll find out how J.J. Abrams brings the current era to a close when the film hits theaters on December 20th.
