It’s fair to say that Tobey Maguire’s most famous role is his turn as cinema’s first Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007. As he’s steered clear of the genre in the 12 years since then, as well as generally shying from major parts, you might think that the actor has decreed that he’s never going to be in another comic book film again. But that’s actually not the case.
In an in-depth interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Maguire was asked if he would ever play another superhero movie role and the star revealed that he’d never say never as he likes to keep an open mind about the projects he takes on.
“I just don’t really have an ‘I would or wouldn’t do’ mindset. I’ll just do whatever. Whatever it is that comes that I feel called to, that may or may not fit in any kind of box.”
This is encouraging to hear for fans of Maguire’s iconic take on the wall-crawler, as a couple of ways for him to follow up his original performance have been touted before. Current Spidey Tom Holland has said he’d love to see Maguire play Uncle Ben in a flashback in the MCU, and the pair are known to have met and got along, so that suggests it’s not impossible.
Otherwise, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s directors have said that Maguire’s web-slinger could feature in Sony’s animated multiverse. In fact, the character of Peter B. Parker, as voiced by Jake Johnson, was almost played by Maguire. In the end though, the filmmaker settled on slipping in a few callbacks to the Raimi trilogy instead – including a nod to the infamous street dance scene from Spider-Man 3.
Alternatively, we’re sure fans would welcome him joining the Worlds of DC franchise, or playing some other Marvel role not connected with Spider-Man.
