Matt Reeves Looking For An Actor In His Late-20s To Star In The Batman

Earlier this week, the internet momentarily got very excited when it was reported that Armie Hammer was in final talks to star in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. In the days since, however, the claim has been denied by multiple sources, the most damning of them all being Hammer himself. In fact, if a new report from THR is anything to go by, the 32-year-old Call Me by Your Name star may not even be in the right age bracket for the part.

According to the latest Heat Vision newsletter, sources indicate that Reeves is “ideally looking to cast a late 20-something actor” to play the next Caped Crusader. The report adds that the new Bruce Wayne won’t be a “straight-up rookie” in the vein of Batman: Year One’s take on the character, but he also won’t be “the expert, undefeatable crimefighter of a Batman at his peak.”

While these claims have yet to be officially confirmed, this is far from the first time we’ve heard it said that The Batman could feature a title character in his 20s. At the very least, it currently feels like a safe bet that the movie will journey into the Dark Knight’s past, setting its story long before Bruce first crosses paths with Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of his contemporary peers.

As for what story Reeves intends to tell, the director himself offered a clue last month when he said that the film will feature a “Rogues Gallery” of villains. As well as adding further credence to the reports that the Penguin will be entering the fray, Reeves’ statement has led to speculation that the movie may take inspiration from the comic book story The Long Halloween. That remains to be seen, but all will be revealed when The Batman hits theaters on June 25th, 2021.
