While all the promotion and merchandise we’ve seen so far for Avengers: Endgame strongly indicates that Thanos will continue to play a major role in the Marvel saga, it’s long been a prominent theory among certain corners of the fandom that the Mad Titan may not be the main threat faced by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in their next adventure. And in a new post from Epicstream, the suggestion is made that the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie may have already hinted at the bigger danger coming the MCU’s way.
As you may recall, James Gunn’s 2014 film saw The Collector offer a brief history lesson on the Infinity Stones. In his monologue, Benicio del Toro’s character details how “six singularities” existed before Creation itself, which were ultimately reduced to stones once the universe came into existence and scattered across the galaxy. And seeing how each of these stones is capable on their own of mowing down entire civilizations, the question is raised of what could happen now that they’ve finally been brought back together in one place.
The post therefore speculates that the new and greater threat faced by our heroes could be the collapse of the universe or existence itself once the Infinity Stones are used for another colossal task (perhaps reversing the snap?). And though the evidence remains pretty thin for this idea, an early synopsis for Endgame at least hinted at the possibility with its tease that “Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is.”
A few months ago, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo claimed that the stakes in Avengers: Endgame will be very much higher than they were in Avengers: Infinity War. And while the above theory certainly suggests one way of accomplishing this feat, we’ll see what the brothers really have in mind when their next film hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
