Yet more good news comes the way of Aquaman today, as Arthur Curry’s standalone debut edges out Wonder Woman to become the highest grossing solo movie of the DCEU.
As it stands, James Wan’s latest flick is at a global gross of $822.9 million, putting the film slightly ahead of the $821.8 million figure boasted by Patty Jenkins’ 2017 feature. At this point, the only DCEU entry left for Aquaman to out-gross is Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and it’s surely only a matter of time before Wan’s blockbuster passes the $873.6 million total of Zack Snyder’s 2016 release.
To break down Aquaman’s $822.9 million figure, $606.5 million of this total was earned overseas, with the film already standing as the DCEU’s highest-grossing entry outside of North America. The other $216.3 million comes from the domestic box office, where the movie still ranks as the lowest-grossing of its cinematic universe. Nonetheless, you can expect Aquaman to at least surpass Justice League’s $229 million figure before it leaves North American cinemas.
In any case, it’s clear that things are going very well for Wan’s new feature, with recent reports even suggesting that Aquaman could ultimately make it past the $1 billion mark. That remains to be seen, but it’s clear either way that the DCEU is in a much better place right now than it was a year ago in the wake of Justice League’s underwhelming commercial performance.
At this rate, you can image that Warner Bros. will be as keen as ever to get to work on a sequel, regardless of whether James Wan feels he’s still got another Aquaman movie in him or not, but first, we’ll see if the DCEU can keep this box office momentum going when Shazam! hits theaters on April 5th, 2019.
